- In this session, we continue our study of Surah Al-Fatihah. The fourth Name/Description of Allah given in this Surah is Maaliki (or Malik) Yawmid-Deen, Master of the Day of Judgement. Surah Al-Faatihah is understood by the scholars of tafsir to contain the whole of the Qur'an in it. Because of this, it is unlike any other chapter of the Qur'an or the Torah and Gospel. In this series, we will look at some of its unique features and lessons in order to see the value of the Qur'an as a whole. Today, we will focus on the unique meanings found within the term Deen, which is commonly translated, in this Surah, as judgment. According to its use in the Qur'an however, it also implies several other matters such as religion, Islam, and even, human nature itself. What do all these terms have to do with Judgment Day? Brother Rashad, I know you come from the Black Community and keep from that tradition; but, as a Latin American who has reverted to Islam, I want to say that your videos really speak to me and I think would be really beneficial to me and my Latino brothers. I think Latinos and Black brothers have their similarities and differences, but of their similarities is the fact that we find ourselves in a Western world that detached from the culture of our ancestors. Im 21 years old and I grew up with mainly with Black and Latino friends with South Florida, so I also grew up experiencing Black culture, and vice-versa my Black brothers grew up experiencing all kinds of Latin culture from Mexico to Cuba to Columbia to Chile.
To speak on our experience, a lot of Latino reverts grew up within the Catholic Church because that was the dominant religion of our nations. But when our parents and grandparents move to America, we realize that the Church in America is not the same Church of our ancestors. It’s a predominantly White and racist institution that doesn’t speak to our experiences as Latinos. So a lot of the brothers and sisters become irreligious, and in that process occasionally some of us pick up a copy of the Quran. That was my experience and so far was the experience of most Latino reverts that I’ve met Subhannallah.
So I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your videos Sheikh Rashad, teaching the Quran, especially to people like me who weren’t blessed to be born into the religion but were blessed to be guided by Allah swt into the religion. Much love and solidarity
