Lean was a dedicated maniac about creating a reality with film; O'Toole was a dedicated maniac about developing characters through acting - and preferably on the stage. We can see how the coming together of the two boldly inventive geniuses would create great & memorable art indeed; however, we can also grasp why it could not POSSIBLY have been a lifelong creative partnership. That latter fact was a bitter pill for Mr. Lean - but, at least, he was not terribly punitive through his disappointment ...😢
A truly gifted visionary. His masterpieces LOA, RD, and DZ were flawless and heralded directors in this day cannot create such art. And Freddie Young was a genius with light and composition.
