All the mixed reviews this album got... I was kinda buying into it for awhile until I went back and heard a ton of old death metal demos from the 80s, then I played this album front to back a few times at the gym. It's a solid fucking release and the guitar work is amazing. So what if Barnes sounds like a half decayed elderly zombie with half his face attached, it fits kinda. 🤘 This is slowly becoming my favorite modern DM album.... 😈
Yes, I agree the wicked vocal style is unique and he sounds undead! Also, those people complaining seem to be ignoring the awesome music. It's like a bandwagon thing for people to hate on Barnes for some reason. Lots of those same people I'm sure aren't that into the vocals on some extreme metal releases but usually in metal, if the music is awesome, that's the main important thing. So they probably ignore lots of sub-par vocals in other bands but hating on SFU seems to get lots of clicks and it's like a herd mentality. Keep being different guys!!!! Plus SFU has many different eras or types of sounds by now which is cool. Should be an album for everybody. Personally, I'm way into Undead, Unborn, and Unburied, and Maximum Violence is my classic! 13 rules, Crypt of the Devil and Torment are pretty great, and I think Nightmares is a step up from Torment. Psyched for a new album!
I think this album gets way to much hate.The main points I saw people had an problem with was the voice and the "uninspired" song writing. Both was fine for me. The only critic point is that I didn't like the production. Besides this it is a great release.
Remember reading UK extreme metal magazine Terrorizer when Haunted came out, Barnes and West wanted a simpler catchier style of DM, from the blastbeat intensity of most of the bands with names ending in 'tion' were doing at the time. Hoping that SFU can write riffs as good as silent violence, human target and non existence. West is untouchable at what he wrote. Seed of filth from Steve was worthy too. Can that original intended style and magic be recaptured in 2023?
I remember from an old interview Jack did in 2020 that it was the goal to go back to the roots of SFU with Nightmares of the Decomposed. Jack and Allen are guitar players with 2 different writing and sounding styles. So there will be never an album that will recapture that style of Haunte until Allen rejoins the band and I think this won't happen.
