    That yellowing really adds to the flavor. Sand troopers are always dirty and their armours do look yellowed.

    Theses toys are self-destructing and the repairs you come up with are helping us give more years of being able to display our figures. Wonderful repair, Dave.

    The Mandalorian makes these yellow troopers more acceptable, love them.

    That’s a clever solution. And that should be a fix that lasts for years. Glad you found a solution. Interesting that different plastics can do damage too each other over time.

    Nice work! I appreciate that you never seem to worry about perfection in your repairs. Sometimes "good enough" really is good enough.

      Very true! As long as you are happy with it, that is the important thing.

    That sand trooper actually looks more screen accurate because he looks like he’s been in the desert! Great to fix up something like this. Well done!

    There's a charm to that Stormtrooper. The aging of the plastic gives him a great aesthetic. Awesome fix as well!

    Those hands falling out would have aggravated me to no end. Glad you were able to figure out a fairly simple fix that functions so well. The work you have done on this poor, discolored Stormtrooper has truly made him far more eye catching and interesting than any of his more minty counterparts. Brilliant!!👏👏👏

    Another very creative fix! Styrene and Plastic Weld are incredibly versatile tools. Of course, the best part of this video comes at 7:35, where the Speak & Spell "Toy Polloi" mixes into the music. Great video Toy Polloi!

    Perfect looking figure for a Sandtrooper. The aging and play and repairs really work well on this figure. I used to go mad when my stormtroopers got marks and scrapes as I liked them minty white. But now I much prefer the liver in and worked in look if the Sandrroopers. Ace video and teaching Dave.

    Have you tried dissolving some scraps of styrene in the plastic weld to create a liquid styrene? If seen it done with leftover model kits sprues, so I imagine that the principal should be the same.

    Really appreciate the link to your tools. There's a good few I'm going to get, especially the helping hand clamps. Need something like that for painting or gluing. I know you've spoken about it before but to idiots like me it would be interesting if you did a short video explaining about when to use or not use plastic weld vs glue. It still confuses me.

    I have Action Joe/Team figures with feet that have melted into the shape of the shoes they were wearing (Indian Moccasins, west point cadet shoes) and 1 of my Bullet Men is an American version with the tight knee high boots and his legs and feet have melted.
    Nice fix btw!

    My first thought was "Would a lacquer coat over the rubber help prevent further burning?".

  • @TheCrabbyArchives
    @TheCrabbyArchives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I kind of wonder if coating the wrist ball joints in a thin layer of acrylic varnish would keep the rubber from melting the hard plastic more? Since it’s like a protective layer

    A small piece of PVC pushed into the arm that fits the hand. (the white pipe from the hardware store) would work great. Just put some glue on the piece of pipe and shove it in the arm. This will not only fill all the holes but blend with the figure.

    I didn’t even realise the hands on these were posable! (Mind you, I’ve also never owned or seen one)

      I too didn't realize the hands were possible since I never owned one either.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of the time because the plastics react together you will find they don't move at all. And I think people just assume that is the case. With a careful twist you can normally release them. This was a very bad case on this figure.
      Boba Fett has the same issue.

    • @MJKToys
      @MJKToys 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toypolloi It was only Fett and Trooper that had the ball wrists, correct? Mine are packed away and I wanted to check the jawa from this line.

  • @rolandkatsuragi

    What can be done to prevent further chemical degradation between the different plastics?

  • @brianartillery
    @brianartillery 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thankfully, nowadays, the formulation of PVC, which the softer parts of action figures are made of, is totally different. It will, over time, still break down, and attack the harder styrene, acrylic, or ABS parts of figures, but will take considerably longer to do so. It's amusing to me that toys I had as a kid in the 1960's, made of polythene and styrene, are still good, and yet the more recent, more 'advanced' plastics, have crumbled or rotted away into sticky, vinegar-smelling sludge (the fate of most of my 1970's Star Wars figures) - it only takes one figure to go off, and it will spread, like a disease.
    Good repair, though. Nice one.

    During a move, I discovered that my 90's Darth Vader 12" figure was flaking itself to destruction; it was then I realized that much of this stuff isn't really made to last.

      @TheToyBoy1978 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although to be fair, its not actually the toy itself as such that's flaking, i assume your talking about Darths costume, the faux leather type material his costume is made of. I actually have that figure mint in box.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I see it. It's not on the file I uploaded so must be a YT issue. Have you seen it on other videos then?

  • @IM-xs3uv
    @IM-xs3uv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shouldn't this have been a Trading Standards issue at the time, or even today if new figures are still constructed like this?

    • @Skraboing649
      @Skraboing649 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably wasn't seen as an issue at the time because these toys were not built to last 40+ years; this is reaction happens slowly over the years. Also, no one knew what a huge monster of a hit Star Wars was going to be, so it wasn't anticipated that people were going to be keeping for decades what were essentially reasonably cheap, mass-produced plastic toys.
      As for nowadays, I'm not sure, but I'd assume that plastics are probably different and less reactive and are tested more perhaps?
