Matriarch and Melodicer

  • Here is a brief "typing-no-talking" demonstration of the Vermona Melodicer being used in conjunction with the Moog Matriarch and a collection of Behringer 2500 modules.
    The Melodicer is really the star of the show in this video, admittedly it is an expensive module but if you are patient they do come up on the used market for good prices, that's how I bought mine.
    And the Matriarch? Even though it's Moog and it sells for a lot of money it is IMHO the Bargain of the Century: Four wonderful sounding VCO's, two beautiful sounding analogue low pass transistor ladder filters in stereo configuration, two gorgeous sounding analogue bucket brigade delays in stereo configuration, and more modular patch points than you can shake a stick at. What's not to like?!

    I'm gonna be honest: a longer loop of this would be an awesome ambient track. Very laid back, not intrusive at all, so chill and all. It's something I would listen to while working.
    And the gear used is irrelevant, no need to justify it. If it's fun to use and the result sounds good to you, that's all you need!

    Fantastic use of the B2500 modules, very nice tones that complete the Moog. Great to see you are still into modular. I really need to send you a 1047K so you can make percussive sounds from the B1047, it would really work well in this track! Keep posting more music in 2023 !

    I agree on about the hardware. Last night I was trying to recreate a synth line and sound using analogue hardware only for the step sequencing and voice. What took me about an hour or so could have been done in about 10 minutes using my DAW, but that wasn’t the point.

    One of my favourite noodlings of yours, Tim - the other being your first Melodicer track - thank you! However, it deserves to be a much longer piece.
    I have 2 questions for you, if that's OK(?):-
    1) Around 4m56s there's a type of ratchet sound. How was that achieved using Melodicer ... or was it purely pseudo-random in nature and not 'planned'?
    2) How could the entire set of sequences be moved up and down in pitch? Would they need to be patched through a quantiser (with an external CV input) to raise or lower them by a number of semitones or could a precision (voltage) adder be used to achieve the same thing by adding a set amount to each sequence?
    My sincere apologies for the degree of my modular ignorance - I'm still learning the basics here!
    Thanks again - I really enjoyed this.

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey. Thanks very much. I can hear a little trill at that approx timestamp...? If that's what you are referring to then it's me noodling about with an acoustic guitar sound (Nord Wave 2) very quietly in the background to add some depth to the track. As for transposition, the melodicer supports that by way of a CV input to shift the pitch up or down, it can be a quantised shift or else unquantised if that is the effect you want.

    More Matriarch content from Tim was not the new year's gift I was expecting but a welcome surprise.
    Did you sell your OG Matriarch for the Death Star console version?

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I made the decision to get the dark version but, to be totally honest, I am missing the colours of the original now! I know, totally fickle, but actually the colours help to delineate the sections and I realise now I used to reach over to the right control before without even thinking about it. Now I have to double check.

    Nice. 🙂 Did Harmonaig get the flick? Have wanted Melodicer since your last video on it. Was going to get Harmonaig as my first proper euro module, to go with the semi-modulars I have (a matriarch, a mother-32 and a subharmonicon). Then get melodicer down the line, fate permitting. Wondering whether you’d recommend that, or not (hence, I’m wondering where Harmonaig went - or is it just hiding out of sight?) … ? Love your videos and your taste in things. 😊 Cheers!

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I did end up selling it but it is a very clever and inspirational module in the right hands. What I mean by that is that I realised I like to have full control over chord progressions, so I found myself not using the harmonaig very much. I'm much more at home with the melodicer choosing notes for me but in the scale/chord I set.

    Hi! awesome video, so excited to learn about this module. Ok, I have a matriarch, polybrute, DFAM, ARP2600 (behringer) in my studio...alongside Push2, Keystep Pro, etc. My question is how am I to utilize the Melodicer with these synths? Could I patch it to the Matriarch and have it generate melodic rhythms for me through the synth? Great work, as always @TimShoebridge !

      @TimShoebridge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Tim, can you do a little video, or just include in one of your up coming videos, a little insight concerning your process of actually patching different synth equipment together? How are you organizing power, midi and audio output for example. Also what about the challenge of studio space? Are your returning a lot of instruments or keeping most of them? How do you decide which ones you are going to keep? Love the jam btw!

    • @HOLLASOUNDS

      Isn't all patching pretty much the same CV, Gate, In and Out?

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding new instruments, sometimes you just get a feeling straight away, either it will work for you or it won't. Other times you really need to give an instrument some time, see how much use you make of it, see how it fits in with the others. One particular synth, the Roland JD-XA, I bought and sold three times! Each time after I sold it I felt regrets. There's aspects to that synth I really love and missed but other aspects drove me mad! 🙄
