  • Pavel Kudinov, Roberto Scaltriti and Antonio Abete sing the thunderous aria "Nel mondo e nell'abisso" from Händel's operas Tamerlano and Riccardo Primo. Who sings it best, in your opinion? Don't judge by the video thumbnail. :-)

    The contest is slightly impaired by the fact that Scaltriti sings the Riccardo Primo version of the aria, which is less flashy than the Tamerlano one. Anyway, there are all fine versions. Kudinov has a strong, virile voice, and the most solid of the three, but it does not vary the colours much. It's very straightforward and monolithic. Scaltriti is slightly nasal but he's more engaging and it works well in the context (the Riccardo Primo's character who sings this aria being the quite hysterical villain whereas in Tamerlano he's the faithful soldier, and you can get the histerism in Scaltriti's rendering. Abete always risks to slip into the basso buffo kind of characterisation, but here's pretty good, with his aggressive way to approach the coloraturas. He wins for me, followed by Scaltriti and Kudinov.

    In my opinion Pavel Kudinov is the best. he has a very good powerful voice with nice timbre and wide range. Very good low notes! Wonderful vocal tecknique, molto equilibrata. Pero, per me ci vorrebbe la colorature piu belle, espressive. Many thanks, Daniel, for this interesting concorso!

    Roberto Scaltriti wins in my opinion based on the fact that he follows and treats the piece like what it's supposed to be, a Baroque piece. His melismas are spot on for this Aria, and his trills with a baroque fashion, validifying it further and shows his technique.

    I now love TH-cam even more than ever! SOMEBODY made and posted this wonderful clip putting together one of Handel's most magnificent arias, however a virtually unknown one, as it is sung by a very minor character in an operatic masterpiece that simply has paled in fame next to its enormously more popular operatic siblings: Giulio Cesare and Rodelinda. There is also a concerto grosso movement--or possibly an organ concerto--that is similar to this unforgettable number. My first exposure to this aria was the Trevor Pinnock DVD with Antonio Abete, and I must say he still is my favorite interpreter of this number. The other two are excellent, too, however.

      I'm here due to the Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 12 in B minor movement II. =] I knew the concerti and one day YEARS ago I listened to Tamerlano and this caught my ear. I just searched for it again today. It really is a unique work. Something about it is kind of "modern pop" ish too. I love it. I might prefer the concerto more... but I do love the aria.

      However, I must add..... most performances it take the concerto at a ghastly tempo.... THe best version is by Kevin Mallon and the Aradia ensemble if you can find it.

    It's a major shame that John Eliot Gardiner entirely excised Leone's arias in his Tamerlano. Jean-Claude Malgoire's recording had another excellent bass Gregory Reinhart firmly delivering both of his arias.

  • @ianramsay138
    @ianramsay138 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Even in a higher key, Abete loses the lower notes. His melismas are all equal hahahahahah. Kudinov is the best bass with the clearest low notes and the most resonance. His melismas are more subtile but change in timbre and become almost breathy. His certainly is the most testosterone filled--except for the melismas. Scaltriri does not have the low range of Kudinov, but his high note are powerful and brilliant. Most of all his melismas are the best of the three because he treats them in a proper baroque manner as ornamentation rather than an equal part of the melody. Of the three he has the clearest, mask-centered voice. Since this is a baroque piece, he wins.
