As a CSA survivor myself, it’s crystal clear. But, I can see how it wouldn’t be clear to someone who hasn’t been there. He said it’s more of an anthem for everyone who has ever hurt him, not just about SA. But, SA (especially CSA) hurts in a different way. CSA rewires your brain and actually physically changes you. It’s super easy to feel like you’re in chains. (Some of us have physically been, but even those of us who haven’t physically, the mental chains are so much worse). You feel like someone else has “taken all of you”. It’s almost hard to describe, but he words it in such a way it makes sense to me.
I’m so glad he was able to tell his truth and side of the story. None of us know what happened between him and Olivia but the people who were bashing him were ridiculous. I’m glad after everything he’s been through he’s able to come back with this truly honest,vulnerable song.

For the ones who are wondering, in GQ he said what does these song are about and one of the reasons was that in his childhood and even while he was a teen he got sexually abused, he couln't remeber it until last year. It fitted with the whole hatred he has lived after Drivers License, so it has two directions with one same way: Leaving him alone, setting him free. The mental abuse he has lived is insane. Now he's healing, it hurts when he didn't try to be shitty with anyone but that's what he received. Tht's the context of Set Me Free.
This is one of his best songs. You can feel his pain, but you can also feel his resilience. Beautiful things come from honesty and sincerity. That's why Joshua's music never fails, he sings from the heart, and that's all that matters. Art was never about impressing, at least not true art. True art is about expressing. Thank you for expressing your feelings to us Josh. It means more than you'd ever know.

I completely agree. People need to remember that there are two sides to every story. I have a lot of respect and sympathy for what he’s gone through in the last year. I can’t imagine the kind of pain he’s had to endure. I’m glad he’s finally standing up for himself and is saying “enough is enough.” It’s time to set him free, and let him live his life without hate.

this song is so important for all rape/ sexual assault victims. not letting your abuser hold that power over you anymore is difficult but liberating. fellow survivors, you are loved and there are brighter days ahead!
I was SA’d from the ages of 7-13 and it’s been an emotional roller coaster. From having to watch people side with my perpetrator to having people I love and trusted not believe me or not support me through it has been life shattering. I’m still trying to navigate my way through the past but hearing songs like this, connecting with other survivors and trying my best to be able to share my story has been extremely liberating. ❤️

What a whirlwind year for both of them, in completely different ways. This is the poetic closure we needed, the full circle moment, the other half of the story. Anyone who knows me knows that I am the biggest Olivia fan, but I’ll never understand what drove fans to attack and bully Josh like he’s not human. People need to understand that no one’s perfect and the truth is never black and white. Knowing now that this song is about SA gives it a completely new meaning. And I'm sad people are making it about Olivia. Josh really poured his heart into this to talk about his trauma. They are not enterly wrong by making this about Olivia because it's also about her, probably the lyrics in the beginning and the bridge are more directed to her. But you are right that it's much more than that, he said it's about everyone who hurt and hold power over him; I think he said in Zach's interview that he wasn't thinking about SA when he wrote it but that he realize later that it also apply to it...
Joshua said (in his Zach Sang interview) that he didn't write this song about the SA itself, but that a while after writing it, he realized that the song resonates with any situation where power or fear is held over someone to control them.
This song definitely has more than one meaning and interpretation as all songs usually can and do. I believe it's a mix of what he has been through in the past, as in the sexual abuse. As well as everything he had to endure throughout the recent year or two. This is his message to all those painful moments that it's time for them to go, it's time for them to set him free. @@rockin5652 Olivia and Joshua, both ultimately have lyrics that shade the other person as their songs kinda are ABOUT EACH OTHER in the first place so it's kinda inevitable. At the same time, their songs have lines that reflect how they felt and how the other person made them felt during the entirety of their relationship. And since their relationship didn't turn out so great - it seems, then ofc they don't have much amazing things to say about each other. Especially after all the shit Joshua had to go through after the release of Olivia's songs. Not really blaming her for releasing content or for what happened to Joshua entirely, but he has all the right to feel how he did and put those feelings into his music. Therefore, you pointing out that Joshua shades Olivia in his song is pretty pointless if you're trying to prove that he's not a good person. This is an extremely lonely thing to handle and finding someone my age, healing on the same path as I, and also advocating like myself, makes me so happy and heartbroken all at once. This song is so healing to those with PTSD from past traumas, especially sexual assault / rape. Thank you for sharing this, it gives me a sense of peace and hope. Some of the lyrics don’t apply to my situation, but especially the lyric “you don’t get to take all of me” is so powerful.

This thing happened with a girl and I. There was a spark and I thought that it was going to be forever. I thought wrong. She ghosted. For a couple of months, I kept telling myself, "I screwed up, She's too good for me, she never really liked me, I have no one to blame but myself." I was messed up in my mind, listening to songs about people missing someone and/or people thinking they aren't good enough. This song made me realize that, I don't need a girl in my life. She ghosted me, I didn't do anything. Don't care if it's true about me not being good enough, I'm going to work on me, move on, live my life. Thank you so much Joshua. This song has set me free.

So I just hope he heals and he gets good and happy things, and that he's able to enjoy those good and happy things when they come to him. This right here is a human being. The amount of hate he unfairly got for pretty much an entire year was more than convicted rapists, murders or terrorists have gotten. This is the most toxic and unhealthy our society has ever been and I’m ashamed to be a part of this generation. We need to do better, we need to speak up, we all need to play our part both privately and publicly so nobody experiences this extreme amount of judgement and hatred for something as simple as a breakup, that we never once had the entire story about. There’s a lot of people who are going to have to answer to something higher than them, whether it’s God, karma or something else. We need to do better, all of us, simple as that.

I know the feeling. I’ve been in a lot of fan communities that are toxic as hell, and they made me lose faith in humanity. I thought confronting them would put a stop to it. I’ve been doing that for years, but all it is is a losing battle. I’m trying now to avoid all of that because it does is take you down a really dark path where you can really lose yourself in anger and hate.

As a CSA survivor myself, it’s crystal clear. But, I can see how it wouldn’t be clear to someone who hasn’t been there. He said it’s more of an anthem for everyone who has ever hurt him, not just about SA. But, SA (especially CSA) hurts in a different way. CSA rewires your brain and actually physically changes you. It’s super easy to feel like you’re in chains. (Some of us have physically been, but even those of us who haven’t physically, the mental chains are so much worse). You feel like someone else has “taken all of you”. It’s almost hard to describe, but he words it in such a way it makes sense to me.

For the ones who are wondering, in GQ he said what does these song are about and one of the reasons was that in his childhood and even while he was a teen he got sexually abused, he couln't remeber it until last year. It fitted with the whole hatred he has lived after Drivers License, so it has two directions with one same way: Leaving him alone, setting him free. The mental abuse he has lived is insane. Now he's healing, it hurts when he didn't try to be shitty with anyone but that's what he received. Tht's the context of Set Me Free.
This is one of his best songs. You can feel his pain, but you can also feel his resilience. Beautiful things come from honesty and sincerity. They are not enterly wrong by making this about Olivia because it's also about her, probably the lyrics in the beginning and the bridge are more directed to her. But you are right that it's much more than that, he said it's about everyone who hurt and hold power over him; I think he said in Zach's interview that he wasn't thinking about SA when he wrote it but that he realize later that it also apply to it...
Joshua said (in his Zach Sang interview) that he didn't write this song about the SA itself, but that a while after writing it, he realized that the song resonates with any situation where power or fear is held over someone to control them.

At the same time, their songs have lines that reflect how they felt and how the other person made them felt during the entirety of their relationship. Every time I listen to Joshua Bassett, I have emotions pouring out of me, like it’s okay to be vulnerable and feel everything instead of bottling everything up, this was the perfect song, I feel like I’m floating in the sky every time I hear this chorus

let me start off by saying how amazing these songs are. i don’t think i have ever heard a song like set me free. josh has a way with digging deep into his soul and pouring EVERYTHING out. with the year he has had, i applaud him. when people push you down and it seems like the whole world is against you, it feels impossible to stand back up.
and that’s what he did
instead of giving into hate and bitterness, he turned the other cheek. he put his emotions into his music. i just want you to know you deserve the world. this isn’t some kind of blame game. and there are always two sides of a story. instead of pushing someone down when they are too afraid to speak about it, be there for them. stop filling this space with hate.

So I just hope he heals and he gets good and happy things, and that he's able to enjoy those good and happy things when they come to him. This right here is a human being. The amount of hate he unfairly got for pretty much an entire year was more than convicted rapists, murders or terrorists have gotten. This is the most toxic and unhealthy our society has ever been and I’m ashamed to be a part of this generation. We need to do better, we need to speak up, we all need to play our part both privately and publicly so nobody experiences this extreme amount of judgement and hatred for something as simple as a breakup, that we never once had the entire story about. There’s a lot of people who are going to have to answer to something higher than them, whether it’s God, karma or something else. We need to do better, all of us, simple as that.

I know the feeling. I’ve been in a lot of fan communities that are toxic as hell, and they made me lose faith in humanity. I thought confronting them would put a stop to it. I’ve been doing that for years, but all it is is a losing battle. I’m trying now to avoid all of that because it does is take you down a really dark path where you can really lose yourself in anger and hate.
