Now will practice long tones . And add vibrato , each time I've concentrated on learning to play the Flute I've found better and better flute information , in 1992 had the good fortune to buy a used Geminehardt M2 , 2021 ! I've still got it ! Had it repaired . Realizing it's silver plated , the mechanics , are in excellent working order. Thanks to TH-cam I've found really understandable instruction.the Flute requires musical understanding and instrument technique , from hand dexterity to the embouchure . I started with beginning band instruction books and friends/ nieces that were in highschool band.

Hi Angela I guess my tone is in the middle of the "tone spectrum", I sincerely don't like the bold (thick) tone of many (maybe for a ff passage or dynamic) nor the thin one of the majority, the tone I strive for is a sweet, full (not harsh) and ethereal with substance (does it make sense?)
Awesome video (as usual) and so helpful, thanks for your constant dedication in sharing your knowledge with all of us.
    God bless you and yours.

Thank you so much for your lessons and help.... A question about breathing into the sinuses.... And this is given that one is already taking a deep breath, breathing deeply into the belly, into the rib cage and the back, and then up through the throat and a wide mouth and into the sinuses,... at that point, when you have that sort of deep breath,... or anyway, speaking for myself,... at that point (when I play a note, warming up, for instance), I notice that even as I do all of that, and breathing into the sinuses, when I play a note, my sinuses sort of shut off from the rest of my body.... Is that normal? Or should I actually be keeping the opening into the sinus cavity open even as I play?.... which frankly seems impossible.... At the same time, just as an aside, as I learned how to breathe deeply and completely from deep belly and up through an open throat and into the sinuses, my sound is very much better. Thank you.

Yes, that is completely normal. I think everyone has to work at keeping the sinuses open. When you take that type of proper breath you feel the sinuses open up but if we aren't careful they close right back up. It happens with me too. I try to really work at it especially when I'm warming up. Then, if my ear is attracted to the sound I'm getting then it will make me want to have that sound in everything. Great observation!

Thanks for your great advice. There's so much to think about re the Sound. When I zero in on getting Flt vibrating/resonating, the other viables seem to fall in line.
I had a Flt come back after overhaul with a thinner sound. Tech set the action a bit low & it seemed muffled. The tiniest adjustment to pad height made all the difference. (that's a 'variable' you can be stuck with).
No criticism of the Tech, she has a nice sound & set it up as she hears it.
When you HEAR what you want you're 1/2 way to getting it. Problem easily fixed but you have to tell them what you're after.
How do you approach a repairer?
Your videos are always great. Thanks again.

Hi Deryck, I had the same problem one time after my flute was adjusted. It came back with no power at all. At the time I was unaware of what could be the problem. Luckily, I had a teacher that though the key height was the problem. In the end it was the Eb pinky key that was too closed. Made all the difference in the world! As far as approaching the technician, first you have to make sure they really know the flute. I am very particular who works on my flute. I think that if you have a good one you can tell them that you want your sound to be bigger and they will adjust accordingly. Thanks for your kind words.

@@DoctorFlute thanks for the heads up on Pinkie Eb. It's depressed most of the time (I thought it was for balance in holding Fl) if it's too close yes, it will muffle other notes (harmonics & all that?) Middle D will be strong & Eb will be flat.
Yrs ago I lowered action on Alto Sax thinking l could play faster. WRONG. I sounded like there was a football sock shoved in the Bell.
Yes, there are Factory default settings for a good reason, but tiny adjustments can be made.
So much to learn in the Music game. You always give us something to consider.
      Thanks again.
