Kitchen and “cucina” themselves are cognates. Some Middle and Modern English words are based on Old English words with a soft “c” which was back when the letter we know as “cee” in Modern English (and maybe also Middle English) was probably known as “chee” (because the letter made the soft sound that the “c dolce” in Italian makes).
