    My parents lived through the depression, so they instilled in me always have enough, or rainy day theory, planning ahead is not hoarding.

    • @pegsclips
      @pegsclips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      certainly NOT. My parents lived through the war.. dad in holland. Mom in NS Canada. Both we're very frugal and kept a cold room for garden harvests. That and if as youth ? we LISTENED to our grandparents? We knew to put foods up for a what if.. I was very pleased to hear a few of my cousins were like minded and keep provisions for a " what if" day as well.
      Not many do these days and those are the one's i think of now.
      Thanks for stopping by and visiting :-D

      I like this page , but I think it is wrong to say that people don’t think of others . A lot don’t , but others do and they want enough to make sure they have enough to help others that aren’t smart enough to plan, but next time they will .... hopefully.

    Yep, I'm 65, canned milk for years. Love you friendly ways, thank you. Yep, longer you can milk the more like carnation milk. Even added sugar to taste and got sweetened condensed milk, you can even add vanilla and other flavorings.

    • @pegsclips
      @pegsclips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      i was toying with the idea of adding vanilla.. Andy doesn't like the canned milk.. ( he thinks).. he's had it a few times in a crunch.. just didn't KNOW lol.. i do prefer it for baking as well. . glad you've joined us Julia :-D

      How do you know how much sugar to add for sweetened condensed milk? Do you mean that the longer you pressure cook the more the milk tastes like evaporated? Length of time in pressure cooker for this and should we use whole milk for evaporated type taste?

    • @pegsclips
      @pegsclips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gracehillgranny5445 hey🙂. The more fats in the milk..the more like evaporated milk it will taste. Ive not dine the longer method we touched on in video so I cant say that its quite like evaporated or not. We used 2 percent which resulted in a creamy homogenized milk.

      I am from Southern California. When I was very young, my aunt and uncle got milk in a big white cardboard box with a big thick plastic bag inside with milk in it. The box had a round hole where the bag could be pulled through to the outside and the milk was dispensed with a neat valve. The box and the milk was stored in the refrigerator. That milk was so delicious ❤

    This is great. USDA likes to rain on our parade. There hasn't been a case of botulism since 1970 something at a restaurant in MI. I was in a situation once many years ago, a great blizzard and a friend was over with her 2 babies and she couldn't go home. I was out of milk and she was out also. I lived out in the country but I called a neighbor down the road and they had a gallon of milk in their freezer. What a blessing to have good neighbors! Ever since then I always keep some dry milk for emergencies.

    Canadian lady here🙂👋 Hello.
    I can remember when my children were born that some of my friends and family when they had children would use Carnation evaporated milk to feed the babies.
    Can you imagine if the government told people it was safe to can your own milk at home how much money these mothers would have been saving?!
    Maybe that is why this is one of the items they don't like to say you can, but yet go to the grocery store and there is canned milk on the shelf.

    • @pegsclips
      @pegsclips  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      welcome fellow canadian :-D There are LOTS of foods the gov't doesn't want us to put up for the very reason you mentioned. they then state it's an unsafe product.. but how they get away with it? it's NOT BEEN TESTED so isn't safe.. i am a rebel canner BUT i don't mess with swelling products like pasta, rice, breads, ...just research..your kitchen your rules WITH logic and testing.. we do cream cheese and butter as well.. i also dry oven can our flour to keep it safe for years... and rice in dry oven canning. none of which is recommended by the powers that be.. yet our great grannies have done so well before the judging. canned milk? is over to top awesome in baking as well.. i will reach for it when baking rather then fresh. lol.. and yes.. i recall mom's using evaporated milk.. or even making there own evaporated milk. Gov't control over our foods has been going on for two generations now and well.. lets cut that control lol.

    I'm a new canner, just started canning this year. I was floored to see people canning milk since we are "not supposed to can dairy". But it makes sense, if the stores can sell it, why can't I make it. I agree our government has kept so much from for the sake of their own pockets and control over the people. I am going to be canning butter/ghee, and am excited to try this and make my own creamer for coffee since it's so expensive in the store and my husband and I both use it in our coffee. Also we make a lot of sausage gravy since my husband is from GA, will be great for that!! Thanks for the video and information!

      I canned meat and veggies several years ago. I started again in June! I am so canning addicted, I can for necessities, but also because it's my new hobby! It relaxes me and makes me feel good about myself! I just want to can everything possible!
      Canning milk will be great for mac & cheese, soups, etc. So many times, my refrigerated milk goes bad even before the exp date. Canning in pints will give me exactly what I need by portions!
      I can't wait to do your French fry cut potatoes for the air fryer!
      I'M ADDICTED❗❗

      It's so good! ok.. here's the solution. do up 3 pints of milk.. fill the canner with jars of water so they don't bounce about. ( they will be jars of sterile water when done.. gift some out ) the two pints of milk? process as per video... then open one to test... if you don't like the taste? use it in baking or in coffee. no loss and at least then you know what you'd be using it for. me? i like the flavor of our 2 percent milk processed.. andy? hates it lol. so i bake with it and use it in coffee (he doesn't have a clue) lol and thus save my fresh for drinking.. but man.. i tell ya.. in a pinch? it's saved my hiney many times lol...
