    Thanks for the excellent review! I have a question about your i2s vs USB findings. With i2s the resource device is responsible for the timing (in this case the clocks of the eversolo dmp-a8). USB is asynchronous (meaning that the timing and buffering is determined by the clocks of the receiving Topping DAC). So, it is not a given that i2s always sounds better. Do you mean the i2s sounds better in your case because the clocks of the Eversolo are better than the Topping? Both have expensive (femto) clocks, so the timing in both should be excellent. Also the USB output of the Eversolo is very clean and the USB input of the Topping is very clean also. I2s is completely dependent of the quality of the source device. In your review you make it sound if i2s is always superior over USB which is IMHO not always the case.

      Hey, my pleasure!
      1) S/PDIF and USB for that matter are horrendously poorly designed interfaces, because they are combining the clock and audio coding onto the same signal (I2S has separate lanes for the signal and clock). The receiver is supposed to recover the clock from this signal as well as extract the audio data. This turns out to be a non-trivial task, and one that almost always leaves the recovered clock contaminated with signal correlated jitter artefacts. So any clock you transmit over an S/PDIF/USB connection that is also carrying audio signals will probably be worse than any internal clock.
      You can reasonably (but not ideally) send a clock over an S/PDIF interface if the interface does not carry any audio signal, but even then the poor bandwidth of the interface does not lend itself to particularly accurate clock reticulation.
      2) For S/PDIF and USB data transmission, you need a digital sender that packs the data and then a digital receiver sitting the DAC board end to receive S/PDIF/USB data, decoding it and then sending it to the MCU and then DAC chips. Via I2S we don't have a digital receiver on the DAC end, bypassing a chip and a digital conversion.

      USB audio 2 & 3 are asynchronous. I believe you are mistaken, but would like to get to the bottom of it.
      Early USB 1 type "B" slaves were clocked by USB 1 type "A" Masters.

      @@polyglosystic. Where did you draw that conclusion from? If you are referring to my reaction: You do not know who I am, how influenceable I am and what my knowledge is about audio equipment. I would say your conclusion seems a bit premature. If you have read my reaction properly you should have digested that I question the use of DDC's in general and IIS in particular. By the way: you did listen to this reviewer, otherwise you could not have given the reaction you did. That is the way we inform ourselves. I bought Topping L30II amp last week and I am blown away by how pathetic it sounds. Tried with multiple Dacs and whatever sound the DAC gives, this amp when involved in the chain was degrading the sound by making the sound thin, flat, lacking bass and sounding un-dynamic. It was also cutting all the notes short without the natural extension of notes.
    I was using Xduoo-XA10 before and that amp was sounding so fuller, natural and dynamic with any Dac I connected to it. It is like night and day difference. Both amps had a complete black background with all my headphones. Also Topping amp gets way too hot like you can't touch it when in use but Xduoo XA-10 though being class A was always comfortable to touch cuz it is well ventilated. Topping amp also heats up the jack of my headphone cable when connected to it. No more topping products for me. They are only good for measurements on ASR I guess

    Great review! A quick question please. For I^ (i square) connection, does a regular HDMI output from a PC or notebook work? Or, do we need a dedicated streamer?

    • @Soundnews
      @Soundnews  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      While HDMI and I2S use the same HDMI cables, you need to use a specific I2S connection with the DX9 on top of a very specific I2S pin configuration (it's quite a mess, I2S wasn't standardized yet). HDMI out won't work, you need a DDC (digital to digital converter) or a dedicated streamer with I2S output.

      For my taste (subjectivity is strong in this one), R26 is better at "making music" although I'm sure it measures worse. R26 is much closer to end-game sounding DACs, DX9 however, offers additional features (Pre & HP amp) and it also costs less. TLDR version: stick to the R26 if you already have a dedicated headphone amp or if you don't use headphones

    I bought this unit after watching your review. I haven't got a lot of experience with highend headphones amps/dac. Before this unit, I used an IFI Zen dac v2.
    This unit opens my Edition XS 's soundstage pretty much and of course, lets me listen with higher volumes without distorting the sound coming out of the headphones.
    I also tried connecting it through i2s using a ddc, the only difference I heard was in the treble which is a tiny bit less grainy.
    Putting it in my stereo setup which is pretty resolving and comparing it through a switch to a Gustard R26 and the latter has a tuny bit more base and a tiny bit more open soundstage .
    Thankyou a lot for your review

The configuration interface plus the remote on the DX9 are very nice. I can't say I enjoy using a mobile application to control the unit as in the K9 PRO ESS case. I use a pair of Audeze LCD-XC headphoens so the headphone amp power output is not that important. Also, I would prefer all headphone outputs to be usable at the same time.

    AKM dacs are more far better than ESS if You are looking for more "human sound". ESS are little better (not much, but a better) with high tones, BUT overall AKM sounds more friendly. ESS are more technical in sound. Im in love with AKM :-).

      Empyrean 2 is tilted towards warmth and sweetness, it doesn't need an extra dose of that and that's why, the DX9 would be my choice with the Empy 2. Cheers, Sandu ;)

    Hi Sandu, Love your reviews. I wanted "your personal recommendation" for a STEREO DAC (will never use headphones). I am torn between Topping DX9, Pegasus II and Aune S9C Pro and can spent up to 1200USD. I currently use Topping E50 DAC (has the same ESS 9068 chip which is in S9C though) thus the new DAC should provide a significant upgrade over my current E50. I have Roksan Caspian Amplifier powering Polk 700 floorstanders and I use Apple TV4K is my streamer.

    Too bad Topping didn't allocate the extra pair of XLR and RCA connectors for a line in with the DX9. It would have been a Grand Slam. I will have to stay with separates for now.

    Unfortunately, after a lengthy 18min review you still missed THE key comparison that everybody was waiting for 😂 How does the DX9 DAC compare to the Eversolo A8???

    • @Soundnews
      @Soundnews  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Comparisons, comparisons...and again, comparisons. The 99% of emails that I'm usually getting (and ignoring 😆). Their features don't align, DX9 has a headphone amp and a very potent one, while DMP-A8 is also a streamer, music server and Roon endpoint. Apples vs oranges, really. However, as DAC only units, they are extremely close. DX9 felt by a hair more technical sounding (faster & more resolving), while DMP-A8 was smoother at the very top.

    • @SpaceEncounter
      @SpaceEncounter 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Why did you show both device next to each other multiple times, if you don‘t want to compare the DACs? Knowing that the A8 DAC is equal to the DX9 could save me an external DAC!

    • @Soundnews
      @Soundnews  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@SpaceEncounter Because, as stated multiple times, the DMP-A8 was used as the streamer for the DX9 in both a stereo and head-fi setup. I can't compare apples to oranges. They have a different feature set.

    • @azrecion
      @azrecion 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Soundnews Let me explain: it is clear that the devices perform a slightly different range of functions, but I think I am not the only one choosing between the two, since not all these functions are needed (for example, I do not need a headphone amplifier, but I need a DAC and a good preamp, but perhaps I am also ready to replace my player if A8 sounds better to me than DX9), so the comparison in sound matters even in this case.
      Well, the DAC has been sorted out (thanks for the clear answer!).
      The question is about the preamp for the stereo system - I have heard an authoritative opinion that the A8 preamp is inferior to the rest of its part and it will be much better to use an external preamp. How would you compare the DX9 and A8 preamps?

    Reviewing a DAC for 18min is too tiring for me cos you have NO yardstick to measure it against, by describing how it sounds for 18min makes even less sense, a more useful review would be comparing it against a DAC with a comparable price range.
