The guitarist here, Ritchie Blackmore, prior to Rainbow, founded a band called Deep Purple. He is considered the pioneer of neoclassical metal. Deep Purple songs that have many neoclassical elements (such as arpeggios) are: -Highway Star -Burn -Speed King -Pictures of Home -Child in Time I highly recommend them!

Rainbow is Ritchie Blackmore's band. He left Deep Purple, of which he was a founding member. Deep Purple's Machine Head has Highway Star which probably has Ritchie's greatest guitar solo.

Definitely need some Mob Rules in there. I do think Kira would really enjoy Turn Up the Night (the opening track from Mob Rules), but Voodoo is my top suggestion. You suggested After All (The Dead) from Dehumanizer. I really like Dehumanizer, but that's not the song I'd suggest. I think "I" is the obvious choice for a Dehumanizer song.
Rainbow was a different band every album with Ritchie Blackmore (guitar) being the only consistent member. Even Dio himself was replaced after three albums and a live album.
Catch the rainbow and Stargazer are one among my favourite songs, the guitar, Dio's voice, everyone is amazing. This band really is genius, they are one of the first creators of what would become metal music, their Influence is huge. From that point of view they are extremely underrated, specially as they were musical geniuses too, no bands today comes as close to their talent and influence . Imo metal bands often do the best love songs, a great metal band has to be able to do great love ballads. Metal is a huge, diverce genre and it's not always easy to tell what is metal or hard rock, like some say Guns and roses is metal but imo they are clearly a hard rock band. But lot of specially the early metal bands played everything from metal, hard rock and rock, like Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Scorpions as example.
"I didn't expect metal guitar solos to be inspired by Bach" - a lot of metal musicians are inspired by classical music. There's even a whole "new/neo classical" metal sub-genre. A lot of metal bands have added classical music to their songs, like Accept has songs like Metal Heart that uses both Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Manowar have played Flight of the Bumblebee on bass and renamed it Sting Of The Bumblebee. Randy Rhoads was a classically trained guitarist and brought a lot of that into the stuff he played. There's a deep connection between metal and classical music. Oh, and one of the most fun connections: guitarist Nita "Hurricane" Strauss is actually a descendant of the composer of the same name
@@kirawasareactor and you have SO much more to discover. It's truly diverse and I really think that anybody who likes music can find their niche in metal somewhere. Whether you like pure aggression or romantic love songs or anything in between, you can certainly find something that speaks to you. There's also something for every mood. Happy songs, sad songs, songs that push you, that get you hyped up, something to chill to. You just have to find it. Scott Bradlee of Postmodern Jukebox once was wondering aloud on twitter why there are so many metalheads at their shows. The replies all basically said that metal fans are all about good music and great musicianship. Because that's what metal is all about.

Absolute hoot watching you react! Seeing you go off on one, headbanging, air drumming, bass playing... the lot. "Stargazer" was the song that started me of in the metal world. I put my headphones on and turned them way up high in in my bedroom I listened to side 2 first as I was curious as to why there were only 2 songs on it😂. By the time Dio sang that he "saw a rainbow rising, look there on the horizon" I was seeing a rainbow in my mind. Man I was there, in the song. I came to realise the power of hard rock and metal music. From there I was introduced to a Canadian trio called Rush and went completely bonkers😁. First thing I heard from them was "2112" side one. I remember being told that I would "grow out of it" but I told oldies (including parents) that I would love this stuff forever. 40 odd years later and I am still crazy about the music being created in the various genres that make up the world of metal. If you want the Dio Rainbow albums (they are definitely the best ones) then you need the first self titled, "Rising" and "Long Live Rock N Roll". If you want to hear lots and lots and lots of guitar soloing then feel free to get "Onstage". I love it but a lot of folks feel it is not the best song choices and or there is too much Ritchie Blackmore (ex Deep Purple) soloing. They are wrong... well in my humble opinion! (Just to say that the first album after Dio called "Down To Earth" is pretty damned good as well) Other bands that it might be worth you checking out (going by your tastes so far), Rush; Scorpions (especially early); UFO and if you want to try something more recent then Orphaned Land from Israel, the only band that has been nominated for a Nobel Peace prize! The bassist you asked about is Jimmy Bain. Jimmy was also the bassist in Dio's band. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Dio and Rainbow are all connected. Both Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple were also one-album vocalists for Sabbath. Dio was lead vocalist of Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Richie Blackmore (guitarist here) and Roger Glover Rainbow's later bassist were both in Deep Purple. Joe Lynn Turner who became Rainbow's lead vocalist after Dio joined Sabbath was a one-album vocalist for Deep Purple. Bassist Jimmy Bain (here) was in both Dio's band and Rainbow. Drummer Cozy Powell was with Rainbow and Sabbath. Bassist Bob Daisley (the bassist who came between Jimmy Bain and Roger Glover in Rainbow) was with both Rainbow and Sabbath. It's one monstrous family. I know there are more members with more connections but those are just the ones that came to mind lol. The UK rock-scene inter-mingled a lot. As weird as it sounds, you just can't go wrong with any songs by Sabbath, Dio, Rainbow or Deep Purple. They're pretty much the founding fathers of early (classic) heavy metal (which most consider hard rock now).

You so must watch the doco “Metal - A Headbanger’s Journey”. I couldn’t recommend it high enough for anyone getting into the genre - you really don’t realise how massive and diverse it is.
That would be good! The same people also did an in depth documentary mini-series called Metal Evolution which does a great job of breaking down a lot of metal's core subgenres!
The Banger docs are *okay*, but I find that Mr. Dunn has difficulty keeping his personal biases out of the films. For instance he doesn't know anything about Power Metal and has seemingly never taken the time to learn even though he ostensibly is making career out of metal education. It seems like he's always most interested in talking about his favorite bands instead of discussing things objectively. Also he makes a lot of factual statements that to me are just plain wrong. For instance I'm pretty sure in Headbanger's Journey he claims that Black Metal evolved from Death Metal which is just objectively not true. In the Extreme Metal episode he just kind of barely mentions Bathory once in passing and it's like: dude, that band was kind of a big deal. That said, I think Headbanger's Journey is a decent starting point for someone who wants to gain a baseline understanding of metal culture and history, just know that some of the things he says aren't going to be totally accurate. I think the best thing that guy did was introduce people to Martin Popoff who actually DOES know what he's talking about.
Ricthie "Shredmeister" Blackmore was an early pioneer of sweep picking, classical chord structure, and tremelo picking in rock. The guitar solo in Rainbow's "Gates of Babylon" is ridiculous. My favourite quiet song by them is "Rainbow Eyes". They only did three albums together, but Dio/Blackmore was a magical combination

The albums were "Heaven & Hell", "Mob Rules" and "Dehumanizer" (plus "Live Evil", but that's a live album). And then the same band had to work under a different name (they chose "Heaven & Hell" as the band name, obviously) and made the last studio album before Ronnie died: "The Devil You Know", which fits right into the line of the previously mentioned albums.

Yes, Rainbow Rising would be a perfect album to start with. It's quality over quantity, because it only has 6 songs. Tarot Woman begins with an amazing synth solo, and then slowly comes in with a badass guitar riff, and then the way Dio sings this chorus is just orgasmic. Run with the Wolf is an epic slower power metal ballad. Starstruck is easily the most catchy song in the album, it's chorus is easily the second best of the album. Do You Close Your Eyes honestly feels a bit like a filler song, it's the least interesting song in the album; but it's also the shortest, and it's still a fantastic song overall. Then there's Stargazer, you already know that one, it was a major influence on metal, and it would have to be my favorite of the album, and my second favorite song of all time. Then finally, we have A Light In The Black, it's technically a sequel to the story set up in Stargazer, so be looking out for that. Also, it's bloody insane; it's not as emotionally powerful as Stargazer, because it's pure energy; I swear it's solo is like, twice as long as Stargazer's.

Loved this vid! Stargazer is truly one of the best songs ever written, I had pretty much the same reactions when I first listened to it. Also if you pay attention to the lyrics, the song A Light in the Black is the continuation to Stargazer and listening to them back to back is a whole experience. So yeah definitely listen to Rising in its entirety! If you liked the guitar then you should check out Deep Purple, especially their work between 1970 and 1974, before Blackmore first left to found Rainbow. And then of course there's the two Black Sabbath albums with Dio (but you already know by now). Looking forward to more of your reactions!

Before youtube... we used to invite a friend over and play music. There was always a sense of happiness when you played something new for them and they would get into it. Watching you listening to those old records and seeing the expression on your face is as close as it gets to the good old days. It is a joy to see younger generations hear these bands and be amazed like i was. Most of these are classics that you cant go wrong with. But sometimes you would find a band that was a little "out there". for that we would go for a ride in the car and play it loud and lock the door while driving really fast so you could not get away if you didnt like it :)
Exactly! Most of the youngsters will never experience the music like we did. Waiting at the music store to get the album, cycling back home, trying to get rid of the parents so we could us e the recordplayer and then listen, listen and listen again

Back in the 70's this was Heavy Rock, we didn't use metal as a term for this, that started around 1979/80 being used for certain bands that were heavier than this such as Judas Priest and some of the newer British bands of that time.

Rainbow were about the first rock band I listened to (about forty years ago, when Down To Earth, their fourth album, was new - I am *really* old 😂) & were a great gateway, for me, into rock and metal... I'll still listen to them occasionally, even though my tastes have expanded to faster, heavier bands since then! Oh - and my second rock band was Deep Purple, because that's where Ritchie Blackmore, the guitarist, came from... And yes, they're *well* worth your time too - I'll point you at Highway Star (th-cam.com/video/UAKCR7kQMTQ/w-d-xo.html) by the classic line-up of Blackmore, Ian Gillan (the singer), Ian Paice (drums), Jon Lord (keyboards) and Roger Glover (bass - who was also in Rainbow!). I'm also quite partial to Gillan's band after Purple (variously called The Ian Gillan Band, then just Gillan) - they had quite a run of hit singles around 1979-81 - try Mutually Assured Destruction (th-cam.com/video/6Oc8GE1Nnm0/w-d-xo.html) Final thing - the drummer in all those Rainbow tracks is Cozy Powell - very well regarded drummer - he was in Black Sabbath for a period & played with several other bands (Whitesnake, Michael Schenker Group, to name two).
I think Deep Purple is essential to understand the metal origins, the songs that I recommend to listen are Highway Star, Speed king, Child on time, and Smoke on the Water for the mark II or classic line-up, I would add from the mark III line up Burn and Stormbringer. My album recomendation would be Machine Head.
Just a note about rock and classical music. The Deep Purple keyboard player, Jon Lord, when he retired from the rock scene became a classical composer.

Well,,,,,, here's where it starts to get complicated. Deep Purple/Rainbow/Black Sabbath. They're all family you know. Deep Purple featuring Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan on voice. DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK. That's for both guitar and vocal pyrotechnics. Ian Gillan quit in 73 and was replaced by David Coverdale. They also got a new bass player/vocalist called Glenn Hughs. Check out BURN. Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple in late 74 and formed Rainbow. Dio quit Rainbow and Joined Black Sabbath in 80. HEAVEN AND HELL. Dio quit Sabbath in 82 and Ian Gillan (ex-Purple) joined as singer. BORN AGAIN. for more vocal pyrotechnics. Sabbath sort of fell apart after 83 but a new Sabbath album was out in 86 with Glenn Hughs as singer. Ex Purple again. After the 83 Sabbath tour ended, Ritchie Blackmore put the 'popular' Deep Purple lineup back together again with Ian Gillan on voice. PERFECT STRANGERS. OZZY got back together with Sabbath and during one of Sabbath's time off, Dio got back together with Tony and Geezer and Appice who was the lineup on Heaven And Hell and also Mob Rules and did another album but couldn't call themselves Sabbath because there was already a working band called that with OZZY and Bill Ward. So they called themselves Heaven And Hell. That album is worth looking at too. Ummmmmm, So,,, get Rainbow Rising, Deep Purple in Rock, Deep Purple Burn, Black Sabbath Heaven And Hell, Black Sabbath Mob Rules, Black Sabbath Born Again and Deep Purple Perfect Strangers. Burn also has some of the best Ian Paice drumming you will hear! If you see clips of Ian without a shirt on, you will know he was high at the time. Jon Lord on keyboard is legendary too, especially when you consider he was only using a cut-down Hammond organ at the time

Poet and the Pendulum is a masterpiece, it's really personal and sentimental and there's a backstory to it, but it's so good. Watch the live versions with Floor Jansen as lead singer, she's probably the best singer you'll ever hear. Another really good one to showcase Marko (bassist and singer) is Islander live at Tampere. Then there's a lot of other songs you can listen to, like Storytime, Last Ride of the Day. Phantom of the Opera should also be really interesting, and I'd go with Tarja's live version on this one

Being old, I remember this when it came out. Recording copies on a C90 tape for all my mates, headbanging in rock nightclubs - those were the days. Golden era for rock music! I can never decide which if my favorite Dio track though, this or Heaven and Hell. Both bloody good tracks! :)

Queensrÿche is a good suggestion. For my money Rage For Order is their best album so I'll definitely second Walk In the Shadows. Pretty much everything they did in the 80s is gold, though; It's tough to pick favorite songs from that period. Also they have plenty of sad songs/heartbreak songs.

There is so much I could write about how great Ritchie Blackmore is and how great Ronnie Dio was but I can not overlook the magnificent drumming by the late Cozy Powell. Listen to On Stage: this is one of the greatest live albums ever. There is so much to discover here. I’m happy for you. I envy you because I wish that I could go back and listen to them again for the first time and feel that incredible feeling that only great art provides. Good for you young lady!
Stargazer is one of the best guitar solos of all time man. The way through music, you can just see the wizard ascending the tower, jumping, the held breath of everyone, and it all comes crashing down. 10/10

Kira your reactions are absolutely priceless! Loved and enjoyed this video so much. Rainbow’s sound got more commercialized with time once Dio left the band. There have been so many different lineups with Rainbow but the one consistent member, the glue of the band, is the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. He is the embodiment of witchcraft on guitar. His licks are amazing. If you loved the solos and the songs you reacted to, you must do the band he was in prior to Rainbow: Deep Purple. Specifically the songs Highway Star and Burn. Rainbow is Ritchie Blackmore's band. He left Deep Purple, of which he was a founding member. Deep Purple's Machine Head has Highway Star which probably has Ritchie's greatest guitar solo.

You suggested After All (The Dead) from Dehumanizer. I really like Dehumanizer, but that's not the song I'd suggest. I think "I" is the obvious choice for a Dehumanizer song.

Catch the rainbow and Stargazer are one among my favourite songs, the guitar, Dio's voice, everyone is amazing. This band really is genius, they are one of the first creators of what would become metal music, their Influence is huge. From that point of view they are extremely underrated, specially as they were musical geniuses too, no bands today comes as close to their talent and influence .
Imo metal bands often do the best love songs, a great metal band has to be able to do great love ballads. Metal is a huge, diverce genre and it's not always easy to tell what is metal or hard rock, like some say Guns and roses is metal but imo they are clearly a hard rock band. But lot of specially the early metal bands played everything from metal, hard rock and rock, like Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Scorpions as example.
"I didn't expect metal guitar solos to be inspired by Bach" - a lot of metal musicians are inspired by classical music. There's even a whole "new/neo classical" metal sub-genre. A lot of metal bands have added classical music to their songs, like Accept has songs like Metal Heart that uses both Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Manowar have played Flight of the Bumblebee on bass and renamed it Sting Of The Bumblebee. Randy Rhoads was a classically trained guitarist and brought a lot of that into the stuff he played. There's a deep connection between metal and classical music. Oh, and one of the most fun connections: guitarist Nita "Hurricane" Strauss is actually a descendant of the composer of the same name
Well, Dio himself was inspired by Bach, too. Bach and Italian opera singers.

@@kirawasareactor and you have SO much more to discover. It's truly diverse and I really think that anybody who likes music can find their niche in metal somewhere. Whether you like pure aggression or romantic love songs or anything in between, you can certainly find something that speaks to you. There's also something for every mood. Happy songs, sad songs, songs that push you, that get you hyped up, something to chill to. You just have to find it.
Scott Bradlee of Postmodern Jukebox once was wondering aloud on twitter why there are so many metalheads at their shows. The replies all basically said that metal fans are all about good music and great musicianship. Because that's what metal is all about.

By favourite band of all time and the three studio albums they made with Dio between 1975 and 1978 are just totally phenomenal from start to finish.

"Stargazer" was the song that started me of in the metal world. I put my headphones on and turned them way up high in in my bedroom I listened to side 2 first as I was curious as to why there were only 2 songs on it😂.
By the time Dio sang that he "saw a rainbow rising, look there on the horizon" I was seeing a rainbow in my mind. Man I was there, in the song. I came to realise the power of hard rock and metal music.
From there I was introduced to a Canadian trio called Rush and went completely bonkers😁. First thing I heard from them was "2112" side one.
I remember being told that I would "grow out of it" but I told oldies (including parents) that I would love this stuff forever.
40 odd years later and I am still crazy about the music being created in the various genres that make up the world of metal.
If you want the Dio Rainbow albums (they are definitely the best ones) then you need the first self titled, "Rising" and "Long Live Rock N Roll". If you want to hear lots and lots and lots of guitar soloing then feel free to get "Onstage". I love it but a lot of folks feel it is not the best song choices and or there is too much Ritchie Blackmore (ex Deep Purple) soloing. They are wrong... well in my humble opinion! (Just to say that the first album after Dio called "Down To Earth" is pretty damned good as well)
Other bands that it might be worth you checking out (going by your tastes so far), Rush; Scorpions (especially early); UFO and if you want to try something more recent then Orphaned Land from Israel, the only band that has been nominated for a Nobel Peace prize!

The bassist you asked about is Jimmy Bain. Jimmy was also the bassist in Dio's band.
Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Dio and Rainbow are all connected. Both Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple were also one-album vocalists for Sabbath. Dio was lead vocalist of Rainbow and Black Sabbath. Richie Blackmore (guitarist here) and Roger Glover Rainbow's later bassist were both in Deep Purple. Joe Lynn Turner who became Rainbow's lead vocalist after Dio joined Sabbath was a one-album vocalist for Deep Purple. Bassist Jimmy Bain (here) was in both Dio's band and Rainbow. Drummer Cozy Powell was with Rainbow and Sabbath. Bassist Bob Daisley (the bassist who came between Jimmy Bain and Roger Glover in Rainbow) was with both Rainbow and Sabbath.
It's one monstrous family. I know there are more members with more connections but those are just the ones that came to mind lol. The UK rock-scene inter-mingled a lot. As weird as it sounds, you just can't go wrong with any songs by Sabbath, Dio, Rainbow or Deep Purple. They're pretty much the founding fathers of early (classic) heavy metal (which most consider hard rock now).
You didn't want Stargazer to end. Well, it didn't. Sort of. The next song on Rising is A Light In The Black and it continues the same story. Might want to give it a listen.
Also the Guitarist is Richie Blackmore who is also in Deep Purple. Do Deep Purple Child in Time. You will love it.

That would be good! The same people also did an in depth documentary mini-series called Metal Evolution which does a great job of breaking down a lot of metal's core subgenres!
The Banger docs are *okay*, but I find that Mr. Dunn has difficulty keeping his personal biases out of the films. For instance he doesn't know anything about Power Metal and has seemingly never taken the time to learn even though he ostensibly is making career out of metal education. It seems like he's always most interested in talking about his favorite bands instead of discussing things objectively. Also he makes a lot of factual statements that to me are just plain wrong. For instance I'm pretty sure in Headbanger's Journey he claims that Black Metal evolved from Death Metal which is just objectively not true. In the Extreme Metal episode he just kind of barely mentions Bathory once in passing and it's like: dude, that band was kind of a big deal. That said, I think Headbanger's Journey is a decent starting point for someone who wants to gain a baseline understanding of metal culture and history, just know that some of the things he says aren't going to be totally accurate. I think the best thing that guy did was introduce people to Martin Popoff who actually DOES know what he's talking about.
Ricthie "Shredmeister" Blackmore was an early pioneer of sweep picking, classical chord structure, and tremelo picking in rock. The guitar solo in Rainbow's "Gates of Babylon" is ridiculous. My favourite quiet song by them is "Rainbow Eyes". They only did three albums together, but Dio/Blackmore was a magical combination
I mean dio was the singer for black sabbath for a bit after ozzy left, seems like a natural progression. I believe heaven and hell and mob rules were the albums he was on.

The albums were "Heaven & Hell", "Mob Rules" and "Dehumanizer" (plus "Live Evil", but that's a live album). And then the same band had to work under a different name (they chose "Heaven & Hell" as the band name, obviously) and made the last studio album before Ronnie died: "The Devil You Know", which fits right into the line of the previously mentioned albums.

Yes, Rainbow Rising would be a perfect album to start with. It's quality over quantity, because it only has 6 songs. Tarot Woman begins with an amazing synth solo, and then slowly comes in with a badass guitar riff, and then the way Dio sings this chorus is just orgasmic. Run with the Wolf is an epic slower power metal ballad. Starstruck is easily the most catchy song in the album, it's chorus is easily the second best of the album. Do You Close Your Eyes honestly feels a bit like a filler song, it's the least interesting song in the album; but it's also the shortest, and it's still a fantastic song overall.
Then there's Stargazer, you already know that one, it was a major influence on metal, and it would have to be my favorite of the album, and my second favorite song of all time. Then finally, we have A Light In The Black, it's technically a sequel to the story set up in Stargazer, so be looking out for that. Also, it's bloody insane; it's not as emotionally powerful as Stargazer, because it's pure energy; I swear it's solo is like, twice as long as Stargazer's.
Ritchie Blackmore was in Deep Purple before he founded Rainbow.

Loved this vid! Stargazer is truly one of the best songs ever written, I had pretty much the same reactions when I first listened to it. Also if you pay attention to the lyrics, the song A Light in the Black is the continuation to Stargazer and listening to them back to back is a whole experience. So yeah definitely listen to Rising in its entirety!
If you liked the guitar then you should check out Deep Purple, especially their work between 1970 and 1974, before Blackmore first left to found Rainbow. And then of course there's the two Black Sabbath albums with Dio (but you already know by now). Looking forward to more of your reactions!

Before youtube... we used to invite a friend over and play music. There was always a sense of happiness when you played something new for them and they would get into it. Watching you listening to those old records and seeing the expression on your face is as close as it gets to the good old days. It is a joy to see younger generations hear these bands and be amazed like i was. Most of these are classics that you cant go wrong with. But sometimes you would find a band that was a little "out there". for that we would go for a ride in the car and play it loud and lock the door while driving really fast so you could not get away if you didnt like it :)
Exactly! Most of the youngsters will never experience the music like we did. Waiting at the music store to get the album, cycling back home, trying to get rid of the parents so we could us e the recordplayer and then listen, listen and listen again

Back in the 70's this was Heavy Rock, we didn't use metal as a term for this, that started around 1979/80 being used for certain bands that were heavier than this such as Judas Priest and some of the newer British bands of that time.

My favorite album of all time is Rainbow - Live in Germany ‘76. Also Live in Munich ‘77 (which is also available on dvd) is amazing. Highly recommend checking those out
Bonjour Kira! (from the woods near Pierrefonds castle ;) Dio is fantastic in Rainbow but I think his early days/earlier work are a bit underrated and deserve more focus .
You seem to be moved by progressive & epic music, ..so no time to loose! You should not be disappointed listening to these (less heavy) Dio gems by Elf / The Elves & Roger Glover ;)

Can confirm, truly a great song, a staple in their catalogue for a reason. Also Here come the Tears and Beyond the Realms of Death. Rob Halford can do so much and he excells at conveying emotions

That guitarist is the one and only Richie Blackmore. You should listen to his work with Deep Purple, that band will blow your mind, one of the founders of heavy metal.

So much to say, yet you said it all. These guys are monsters, all of them. You'll still hear a lot about Ritchie Blackmore. You are taking the right path. From there you can go any and everywhere. Until you decide what's your thing. I think you should go to Uriah Heep (very underestimated band) or Deep Purple and progress to heavier stuff from there. You still got the whole of the 80's to go through. I'm loving ev'ry sec. Congrats from Rio de Janeiro!

Rainbow were about the first rock band I listened to (about forty years ago, when Down To Earth, their fourth album, was new - I am *really* old 😂) & were a great gateway, for me, into rock and metal... I'll still listen to them occasionally, even though my tastes have expanded to faster, heavier bands since then!
Oh - and my second rock band was Deep Purple, because that's where Ritchie Blackmore, the guitarist, came from... And yes, they're *well* worth your time too - I'll point you at Highway Star (th-cam.com/video/UAKCR7kQMTQ/w-d-xo.html) by the classic line-up of Blackmore, Ian Gillan (the singer), Ian Paice (drums), Jon Lord (keyboards) and Roger Glover (bass - who was also in Rainbow!). I'm also quite partial to Gillan's band after Purple (variously called The Ian Gillan Band, then just Gillan) - they had quite a run of hit singles around 1979-81 - try Mutually Assured Destruction (th-cam.com/video/6Oc8GE1Nnm0/w-d-xo.html)
Final thing - the drummer in all those Rainbow tracks is Cozy Powell - very well regarded drummer - he was in Black Sabbath for a period & played with several other bands (Whitesnake, Michael Schenker Group, to name two).
I think Deep Purple is essential to understand the metal origins, the songs that I recommend to listen are Highway Star, Speed king, Child on time, and Smoke on the Water for the mark II or classic line-up, I would add from the mark III line up Burn and Stormbringer. My album recomendation would be Machine Head.
Just a note about rock and classical music. The Deep Purple keyboard player, Jon Lord, when he retired from the rock scene became a classical composer.

It's so wholesome watching someone get into metal!! I started in the deep end in all sort of metal subgenres so I'm learning this canon with you. All the stuff you've liked so far, arpeggios, dope ass bass, killer solos and riffs, key/tempo changes, experimental stuff etc. are seriously in no short supply in metal. Deep Purple/Rainbow/Black Sabbath. They're all family you know.
Deep Purple featuring Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan on voice. DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK. That's for both guitar and vocal pyrotechnics. Ian Gillan quit in 73 and was replaced by David Coverdale. They also got a new bass player/vocalist called Glenn Hughs. Check out BURN. Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple in late 74 and formed Rainbow.
Dio quit Rainbow and Joined Black Sabbath in 80. HEAVEN AND HELL.
Dio quit Sabbath in 82 and Ian Gillan (ex-Purple) joined as singer. BORN AGAIN. for more vocal pyrotechnics.
Sabbath sort of fell apart after 83 but a new Sabbath album was out in 86 with Glenn Hughs as singer. Ex Purple again. After the 83 Sabbath tour ended, Ritchie Blackmore put the 'popular' Deep Purple lineup back together again with Ian Gillan on voice. PERFECT STRANGERS.
OZZY got back together with Sabbath and during one of Sabbath's time off, Dio got back together with Tony and Geezer and Appice who was the lineup on Heaven And Hell and also Mob Rules and did another album but couldn't call themselves Sabbath because there was already a working band called that with OZZY and Bill Ward. So they called themselves Heaven And Hell. That album is worth looking at too.
Ummmmmm, So,,, get Rainbow Rising, Deep Purple in Rock, Deep Purple Burn, Black Sabbath Heaven And Hell, Black Sabbath Mob Rules, Black Sabbath Born Again and Deep Purple Perfect Strangers.

Burn also has some of the best Ian Paice drumming you will hear! If you see clips of Ian without a shirt on, you will know he was high at the time. Jon Lord on keyboard is legendary too, especially when you consider he was only using a cut-down Hammond organ at the time
All of their early albums are magical. Like so many albums back then. It was a very magical time for music.

Poet and the Pendulum is a masterpiece, it's really personal and sentimental and there's a backstory to it, but it's so good. Watch the live versions with Floor Jansen as lead singer, she's probably the best singer you'll ever hear. Another really good one to showcase Marko (bassist and singer) is Islander live at Tampere. Then there's a lot of other songs you can listen to, like Storytime, Last Ride of the Day. Phantom of the Opera should also be really interesting, and I'd go with Tarja's live version on this one

Being old, I remember this when it came out. Recording copies on a C90 tape for all my mates, headbanging in rock nightclubs - those were the days. Golden era for rock music! I can never decide which if my favorite Dio track though, this or Heaven and Hell. Both bloody good tracks! :)

Queensrÿche is a good suggestion. For my money Rage For Order is their best album so I'll definitely second Walk In the Shadows. Pretty much everything they did in the 80s is gold, though; It's tough to pick favorite songs from that period. Also they have plenty of sad songs/heartbreak songs.
Stargazer is one of the few songs that made me go woah this is the best thing I've ever heard the first time I listened to it.

It is heartwarming to see your reaction. Rainbow is a band I discovered more than 30 years ago and their music is timeless. There is so much I could write about how great Ritchie Blackmore is and how great Ronnie Dio was but I can not overlook the magnificent drumming by the late Cozy Powell. Listen to On Stage: this is one of the greatest live albums ever. There is so much to discover here. I’m happy for you. I envy you because I wish that I could go back and listen to them again for the first time and feel that incredible feeling that only great art provides. Good for you young lady!

Stargazer is one of the best guitar solos of all time man. The way through music, you can just see the wizard ascending the tower, jumping, the held breath of everyone, and it all comes crashing down. 10/10

Kira your reactions are absolutely priceless! Loved and enjoyed this video so much. Rainbow’s sound got more commercialized with time once Dio left the band. There have been so many different lineups with Rainbow but the one consistent member, the glue of the band, is the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. He is the embodiment of witchcraft on guitar. His licks are amazing. If you loved the solos and the songs you reacted to, you must do the band he was in prior to Rainbow: Deep Purple. Specifically the songs Highway Star and Burn. For Dio , I think you have already been recommended 'Heaven and Hell', 'Neon Nights' and 'Mob Rules' from his time with Sabbath; for Rainbow I would say their more poppy singles 'Since You've Been Gone', 'All Night Long' and 'I Surrender' (different singers); For the guitar player Richie Blackmore how about some from Deep Purple 'Highway Star', 'Child In Time', 'Lazy' and 'Perfect Strangers' are favourites of mine. Ritchie Blackmore was Killer. R.J.Dio was phenomenal in concert,I was singing in the crowd when Ronnie James Dio performed in 2004. The nicest person I ever met.
