Seeing John playing live two decades after I last toured with him, reminds me of so much about the man. He was incredibly generous and supportive of everyone. Never one to stand off and disconnect. John toured extensively his entire career, and employed hundreds of musicians. Many were very well known and respected by the musician community in England. Many others, were simply capable players who were known by somebody involved, available and able to get on tour with the material learned after only a couple weeks of rehearsal.
The road means an opportunity to establish career building connections, and the ability to pay your way in life as a professional entertainer. Many of the finest talents had occasion to polish their chops, and to invent their stage persona. Often they were discovered and given their first big break, that set them on the track to stardom.
9 years gone and still the loss stings, when his absence crosses my mind. I was lucky to count John as my friend all those years ago.

The first live concert act I ever saw back in '71 at the old Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, Ca. He opened for Savoy Brown and Fleetwood Mac. He was a great live show and never got the props he deserved in the U.S. I remember the audience looking around saying who the F#(k is this guy, he freakin' rocks, he had the the old wood rafters shakin' at the Swing that's for sure. He was huge in Europe and rightfully so, many musicians from Elton John, Rod Stewart, Eric Burdon and The Beatles all refer to him as a driving force in blues/rock and his band just kept getting better through the years. I have had a school boy crush on Kathi McDonald forever and she just had the most amazing voice not to mention some of the best legs in rock and she liked showing them. I still listen to Long John and sure wish some of the new bands playing would put out some sounds like this

Unforgotten John's amazing voice, I have had the pleasure and fun to meet him and his band some more time in the nineties. Brilliant also his band, we stay in touch until today and change our memories together. I'm very thankful to know John, R.I.P.
