Cults are a legitimately terrifying concept, yet I also find it fascinating how easily humans can throw common sense and morality out the window when they’re at their lowest point, and the wrong person manages to latch onto their minds with false love and empty promises.
Like Trump's followers - every step Trump has made is to fleece money while building a fascist power base under the guise of a twisted "Christianity". Why is America such fertile ground for White Nationalist christo-fascism ?
Yeah well I think cults are more about false love and empty promises than anything else.
It's like herd mentality. Cult followers are like herd animal who can't think for themselves so need someone to do all the thinking for them so they can blindly follow their rules without overexerting themselves by "logic or morals".
It's even scarier when the cult leader mixes religion & politics to sell their false messages to the masses.
Children have no sense of "common sense" because they haven't experienced enough life and are not wise enough to avoid these religious creeps. 😢
This episode is legitimately heartbreaking with all of those kids getting murdered and a young girl raped and impregnated by a complete creep.

It's weird to me that THIS was the interrogation that was interrupted by the Captain. Not Stabler slamming suspects against the wall or choking them--that's totally kosher. But Olivia raising her voice is apparently too much....

That line has always been so powerful for me. That 12 year old girl's faith was so strong it broke through years of brainwashing and helped her see the truth.

Wow, I can tell that Olivia is a badass queen of SVU she cares for victims. Plus, that yelling scene to the victim's mother is something that I never seen before.

Man the most beautiful irony of this story was that HIS OWN TEACHINGS KILLED HIM. He taught her nobody was greater than god and then got overconfident in his ability to control her and made a crucial mistake… he misspoke and it cost him his life. Such beautiful writing this episode. Cults are extremely real and very scary…

It's terrible.
One of the most intense episodes of the entire series. Watching each of the detectives react to the aftermath of the massacre and then their psych interviews is some of the best acting I have ever seen.
SVU always nails the absolute silence of finding some dead bodies. Detectives don’t say anything, because what is there to say? Feels terrifying real.
I have not seen the full episode but I feel like someone should check if one of the children is still alive. They do not look very dead yet.

Well, someone definitely did. He might as well have said, “And He shall smite the wicked and cast them into the fiery pit!” It worked better with Frollo, though…

And this is one of many problems I have with organized religion. This happens far too often and it's disgusting. I've had church going people approach me and my kids. All I ever say is "stay away from me and my kids"
The idea of God as the Bible describes Him isn't my problem. The notion that humanity is fallen and needs a savior isn't a problem. What is a problem is those same fallen humans use the notion of "faith" to twist the word of God to whatever they want and hide behind their "savior" to justify continuing their sh!tty behavior. Faith is often just taking the "church" at its word, not any notion of God.
Not every person who attends church is a cult leader who is going to hurt your kids. In fact they're the minority and they aren't even Christians at all.
People like this disgust me the most. Using religion as an excuse for theirbown selfish and horrible goals. It goes completely against what is said in the texts of God in those religions like Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, etc.

I used to drive a cab and lived near a fairly well known cult in Texas. Every week, we took people from the airport out to the compound. These were some VERY determined people, nothing was going to keep them from joining the group. Nothing like this happened to my knowledge but there were rumors of child brides.

That little girl is a TERRIFIC actress! Why have we not seen anything from her since 2013 according to IMDB?! It's super hard to nail those emotions that she pulled out in that standoff scene, even for an adult actor/actress.
Props to the actor playing Olivia, she was on fire! Gotta love when an actor is so committed to their work, the amount of effort they put into their performance! It's awesome 😎😎😎

Just looked up that she was actually 12 when this came out... I can't imagine how you get a 12 year old to play this kind of character without traumatizing them... would think it would have been played by an older teen who can at least understand. Hope she felt safe 🙏💙

I love this show because they do a great job on research and giving the audience a glimpse into the psychological aspects behind behaviors. I grew up in and survived a cult known by th major religion it is based on and I have to say that the portrayal of the psychological manipulation and control of cults is dead accurate. Bravo

Having only watched the clips just one thing really stuck with me. I don’t think it was the detective that convinced her to believe her. “He said he was greater than God but nobody is.” She realized right then that he couldn’t be telling the truth because it went against her beliefs. He screwed himself
I really hate people who use the bible and god to commit such outrageous crimes saying its “the lords will” when the stuff they do is the complete opposite in the bible.

That's her job. The defense attorney's whole shtick is to defend her client and, on the off chance she can't keep her out of trouble, she can at least minimize the amount time her client has to spend locked away.
In Daredevil’s debut comic, he took down the monster who killed his dad, and when he was asked to defend him in court, he flat-out refused.
Stabler is not in all of the episode because since he is a family man and a bunch of kids were murdered and of the dead girls reminds Stabler of one of his daughters Captain Cragen and Dr. George Huang thought the case would be way too much for him so they ask him to go home and Stabler was really pissed off about it he wanted to stay on the case and Fin went home he had no problem of it because he has a son and the case was too much for him so it was Olivia and John Munch on the case.
rewatching the series years later and im crying from olivias interrogation scene. i have seen this episode before but being older and a mom makes it so much more emotional

Just another reason why I distrust ALL ORGANIZED RELIGIONS! Since you're being told and taught what to believe, and often enough its "teachings" have been interpreted differently than originally intended when it was created.
Your personal relationship with God is the most important. Spiritual books like the bible just help to strengthen that and help you to understand God's nature and commandments. A church is supposed to help members be strengthened and help one another. Corrupt leaders misinterpret the scriptures to get gain and will be held accountable in the last days for that.
No man who's going to leave his wife would be wearing his wedding ring at death. He loved her, and for all this time, she saw him as a traitor based off the word of one man she was too delusional to question. She failed as a wife and a mother.

This is one of the first episodes of L&O SVU I remember seeing as a kid. It still disturbs me to this day.
He done messed up his own brainwashing. He brainwashed her so bad but messed it up and flipped the switch by saying he was greater than god. He brainwashed her to worship god in a way that he shouldn’t have been worshipped but then said he was greater

I had a student about 18 years ago whose entire family escaped a cult. It used to be called The Children of God, but now it is called The Family International. I know that TH-cam has rules about certain comments, so I encourage everyone who doesn't know about this cult to look it up. I didn't know just how sick cult leaders really were until I read about this one. I would like to find this episode streaming somewhere for free because I don't have the money to renew my Hulu subscription until May.
