I'm not even a teacher, I just like your video lectures lol. I don't know how you do this, but you're clearly very dedicated and make me want to learn more history.
Totally agree with the why. I stopped telling students why we are studying X and instead had them tell me. We do lots of discussions about what X topics is essential to study and what we must learn from it. When I stopped telling them and started asking them, it made a big difference in my classroom. Got some vids like those on my channel too :)
I like how you used the concepts of economics here (choice, opportunity cost, marginal decision making) here. Thanks for this! I am having a rough year. I really appreciate you!
I am starting to teach physiology as a teaching assistant at my university and your videos have really helped me a lot to give an understandable approach to my classes. I love your videos thanks for the knowledge.
I agree that students become more open to working for a grade when we take the time to explain why they are doing what we ask, beyond the typical reason to pass a class/test. However, I have a substantial amount of students who don't buy into any reason for completing the work required to learn or pass. They are complacent to fail. I have close to 200 students this year and half are failing and most aren't concerned because my class is just one of 5, 6, 7 or 8 classes they are failing. Your challenge to take on the issues we can change/influence is by far the right direction all teachers should head to avoid total burn out and self destruction. You continue to be my hero! Thanks for all you do.
I needed this today. Thanks “daddy Heimler” as my kiddos say. I really really really really wish you also did AP Human Geography- whole other animal from WHAP.
This is excellent. Thank you so much! Unfortunately, with my students I struggle more with motivating many of them to not settle for a D-... but the first half of your advice was super applicable. Will be implementing this way of thinking going forward.
Bravo! I think you hit the nail on the head. I hear you bringing up relevance and reality. How is what the student’s doing relevant to current reality and because at their own stage of personal development it’s all about “me”, how is what we are doing going to benefit me now and again in a couple years? For example, the Claim Formula you did a few videos about….I had students use that Claim formula in persuasive writing tasks on college essays (part of the application process) and for one student in applying for a scholarship to join an effort to make insulin more affordable to more people. That strategy worked. Big time. The kids were blown away. I also created a “final” in my APUSH class last year where students chose a theme of US History we learned about and applied the DBQ skills to explain the issue as it has been and as it is currently and then propose an action that they can individually take in their own future to contribute to the betterment of the topic for all (gender equality, systemic racism, even foreign policy). Relevance and feeling, thinking, and believing they are empowered to use their learning in APUSH for themselves as well as their futures. Never seen students so jazzed to use APUSH skills to crush a final project like that. And, yeah, if you don’t do the homework or only put half effort into our rigorous learning, then you’re going to earn a C and not an A. That’s just real life. Great video, sir. Thank you.
I’m (guy) going to be a hs English teacher and I think that a mingling of literature and history is a MUST for the future. Your character and love for reading in the classroom reflects that
@@Oscar.VasquezzzWhat do you think? i’m retiring from the military soon and I’m having a tough time choosing between teaching English or History, I want to help the youth, I needed someone to make a difference in my life when I was young so I’m trying to be that for someone
Basicaly its trying to replicate the self-directed learning in the school class. And as a teacher you are acknowledging it. Like: yes it is not learning positive environment, but we are all in it together, yes the grades are little telling, but we are in it all together,... and soo on.
It's so bizzare to me the concept of how students act. When i was in highschool a few years ago i always was respectful to teachers (i always was a teachers pet i chose to be a TA twice and be a ta in 5th grade aswell 😂) But i also was so lazy with my work. If i was interested I'd put in effort into my essays but then I'd get A's on essays that were supposed to be 3 weeks long, but then I'd do it all in 2 nights and somehow get A's constantly. It honestly made me put less effort in cuz students that put in no effort. During covid my proudest assignment i got a B or B- and i had great feedback on thr assignment and i felt i actually deserved that

There is a lot of wisdom here. Nicely said.
I tip my hat to you...

I'm a student teacher and I want to be like you💯
THANK YOU, GOOD SIR. Mad respect, Heimler. Just a fountain of wisdom! Allow me to start the slow clap here.

Oh wow! Thanks for the kind words! I’m rooting for you from Atlanta!

Yeah that's definitely a different problem, but I'm glad you found at least something useful!
This is so amazing advice. Thank you.

Sir, i love your class but it's hard for me to take notes when you talk so fast. I do love these videos though, 🥰.
