Literally EVERYBODY in Poland knows this song. I remember listening to it when I was 8, in the early 80's. Those classic rock bands are unforgettable, they were giving us taste of freedom and rebellion behind the iron curtain.

Jolka, Jolka, you remember summer from your dreams
When you wrote: "I feel so bad
    Break off at least now
    Do something with me
Don't leave me here alone, oh no"
    Still begging for petrol
    I raced through the night
The engine roared with the last of its strength
    To be inside you again
    Laugh and swear
Everything was so simple these days
The baby was sleeping behind the wall
    As alert as a bird
May God straighten out his dreams!
You said never, never like that
Your tears were as sweet as blood
I emigrated from Your embrace in the morning
The day drove me away, and I came back at night
We were given a solar eclipse
The next one will be, maybe in a hundred years
Nuns were walking along the beach and the sun was going down
It kept falling, unable to fall
A man out there in the world for a pound, he saved a pound
The Toyota is so beautiful, it's scary
Your husband loved order and full glass
He once had a fiancée, like a dream
With a bus of Arabs she cheated on him
He was never himself again, no (...)

This piece of polish culture is based on real life events. Song's writer Marek Dutkiewicz had an affair with the title character in 1982. Her husband has been working in England while she and their son was on vacation at polish sea. With Jolka's consent Marek had written a song that become one of the greatest polish hits. Writer's biography states that after couple of years he had a confrontation with Jolka's husband, he was really mad at him. The marriage didn't stand a chance of time because of adultery.

  • @mpingo91
    @mpingo91 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +65

Ok, just my 2 cents, because probably other commenters will add the rest - this song is known to everyone in Poland.
#1 Its strength is the deeply moving lyrics. It's a recollection of a couple's relationship during the communist era. It was written during Martial Law, a bleak time of feeling defeated, intimidated, lacking any hope, a time that brought demoralization, alcoholism, etc. The phrase _"We were given a solar eclipse, the next one will be maybe in a hundred years"_ already has the status of a saying in certain situations, as does _"she betrayed him with a bus full of Arabians"_ .
#2 The guy who plays the keyboards, Romuald Lipko, was a brilliant composer. Those who can write really great melodies are born once every hundred years ("the next one will be maybe in a hundred years"). Because a typical beat will do even a monkey. He composed dozens of hits not only for his band, but in the 80s and 90s served probably half of the Polish pop music market. Plenty of songs had his name as a composer in the description. Polish stages are still sung by stars to whom he gave a "starter" repertoire. He died in 2020.

I was there standing in the middle of a hill in front of the stage with my mates. The roaring of the crowds was coming out from everywhere. Almost everybody was shedding tears. It was the most amazing experience I ever had at this festival. And I've been to 16 woodstocks...

"Jolka, Jolka" is nota some song. It's the kind of anthem of a generation of Poles and the tough and cruel time of the war state in Poland, with military patrols and tanks on the streets. Those were the years when we used to live in a "big basin" of our small matters and did not try to go out of this safe place. The fairy vodka danced inside us and the end was very close... We know about it, BUT! The times were bad, but we were young and the world was beautiful, women were beautiful and we wanted to live!

Budka Suflera is one of the bands that made the history of the rock music in Poland and “Jolka, Jolka” (pronounced ‘yohl-kah’) is one of the rock anthems that marked the young days of my generation. What amazes me is the fact that the crowd singing along is made of kids that were not even planned to be born in 1982 when this song was hitting the top of every single chart in Poland. This means that today’s young guys are not yet completely lost and get a flash of good taste now and then. If you want to feel the spirit of the time, I suggest that you also check “Za ostatni grosz”, “Cały mój zgiełk”, “Noc komety” (all by Budka Suflera), “Autobiografia”, “Nie płacz, Ewka”, “Chcemy być sobą” and “Niewiele ci mogę dać” by Perfect, „Szał niebieskich ciał”, “Szare miraże”, “Krakowski spleen” and “Boskie Buenos” by Maanam, “Mniej niż zero” and “Tańcz, głupia, tańcz” by Lady Pank, „Biała flaga” by Republika, "Szklana pogoda" by Lombard"… These are just a few samples of what I and my peers were listening to every day 40 years ago. And even though the time was politically and economically hard for us, this music is the reason why I do miss it.

Here is the text of Jolka Jolka( read Yolka)
    Jolka Jolka,
Can you recall that summer of dreams
When you used to write: “I’m feeling so sad
Come to me even at once
    Do something with me
Don’t leave me alone, here, never."
Begging for a drop of petrol,
    I ran like a wind
(And the engine was on its last legs)
    To be in you again,
    Laugh aloud and swear
Everything was so easy these days.
Child was sleeping behind the wall,
    as watchful as a bird,
Please good God, correct his Dreams!
You told me that your love was never so big,
And the blood was as sweet as your tears.
I was departing from your arms at pale dawn
A day drove me out but at night I came back.
We were allowed to see the eclipse,
It would take ages to notice the next one.
Nuns were strolling through the beach, and the sun setting down
It kept hurtling but couldn’t fall.
Your husband in a big world, collecting every cent
    To buy Toyota frightfully splendid.
Your husband worshiped an order and a full glass
Once he had fiancée from dreams,
But she was unfaithful to him in a bus of Arabs,
He was never the same again.
I was departing from your arms at pale dawn
A day drove me out but at night I came back.
We were allowed to see the eclipse,
It would take ages to notice the next one.
We were living in a big bath and rarely we
have been crawling into the dry shore.
The magic booze was whirling in our cells
Main goal was just a stone’s throw away.
I stll can't imagine how it started in this twisted way
Why it faded, no one knows as well,
I'm surrounded by the others, never wake up alone,
But nothing is so easy these days

all these people in the end of the video, were shouting "dziekujemy" as thank you for years of performance of the band, and for whole legacy they left. I was there in 2014, today as 31 y.o. man I can tell, I've shed a tear. Lyrics of all the songs of this band, has always deeper meaning. But it's nice to hear that you can feel the music as it is, btw. Woodstock Stop festival, or as is known by now as Poland Rock Festival, it's for free, or it was back in the days, festival it self it's a thank you to all the volunteers that gather money for "Wielka orkiestra Swiatecznej pomocy" every year they are supplying some medical sector in Poland, for more than 30 years.
you have a really good content on the channel, thank you for making internet a better place 😄

Special for You and yours visitors :
Jolka, Jolka, you remember summer from your dreams
When you wrote: "I feel so bad
    Break off at least now
    Do something with me
Don't leave me here alone, oh no"
    Still begging for petrol
    I raced through the night
The engine roared with the last of its strength
    To be inside you again
    Laugh and swear
Everything was so simple these days
The baby was sleeping behind the wall
    As alert as a bird
May God straighten out his dreams!
You said never, never like that
Your tears were as sweet as blood
I emigrated from Your embrace in the morning
The day drove me away, and I came back at night
We were given a solar eclipse
The next one will be, maybe in a hundred years
Nuns were walking along the beach and the sun was going down
It kept falling, unable to fall
A man out there in the world for a pound, he saved a pound
The Toyota is so beautiful, it's scary
Your husband loved order and full glass
He once had a fiancée, like a dream
With a bus of Arabs she cheated on him
He was never himself again, no
I emigrated from your arms in the morning
The day drove me away, and I came back at night
We were given a solar eclipse
The next one will be, maybe in a hundred years
We lived in a big bathtub and that was rare
    We crawled onto dry land
The vodka sorceress danced within us
The finish line was two steps away
I still don't know why it started like this
Nobody knows why it went out
There are still different ones around me, I don't wake up alone
But nothing is easy these days
    :D

Most of the people in Poland know this band, and especially one of its lead vocalists, Krzysztof Cugowski (now retired). In this video, there were also his two sons on the stage, one playing the guitar and the other one, Piotr Cugowski, here still with long black hair, singing. He is also a vocalist, with a very good voice.

Oczywiście zachodnia Crass, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Conflict, The Exploited, Dead Kennedys. "Czarodziejka gorzałka tańczyła w nas." i wszystko w temacie.
