It matters if you don't want spiders. Since the spiders can climb up in a corner and stay there, making the farm a bit slower since the mob cap fills up faster. Although the farm will still work without the trapdoors on the floor (the trapdoors on the sides are a MUST). A spider needs a 3x3 area to spawn so thats the reason for the pattern.
