In all honesty I feel that FFXV was not that great.
They put too many clashing elements together combined with the lacking story to drive you forward.
I never felt like the game really went anywhere, even after playing about 20 hours, (unsure of how much time I actually spent playing).
There was just way too much to do during the game, instead of at the end to keep me interested, and what little I did play felt bland and boring.
Open worlds all have this problem where they are nice to look at, untill you realize that it's all padding, and detracts from the overall value, save for games like Minecraft or Terraria where you can shape the entire world how you see fit.
I also felt like the random 1960's stuff was way out of place when compared to stuff like the Crown City or the Empire.
The music, (minus the FF CDs that can be bought), is pretty lack luster, and really bogs down the experience.
Chocobo theme and the random Empire encounter theme are nice, but towns and the world at large have bland uninteresting themes...
The combat also didn't do it for me.
It's not very practical and often just boils down to right weapon for the right job, AKA daggers!
      OP AF. Nuff said.
In closing, I did not enjoy my time with FFXV, it was bland with too much to do before even hitting the end of the game.

Needing to watch a movie to understand a game's story is unacceptable; it needs to stand on its own.

understand =/= character development the fuck? U could give me texts to read instead of cutscenes and I'd understand the story.

    • @alienxmz
      @alienxmz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

thats the biggest lie I had ever heard. I guarantee you at least 80% of players (including myself) understood nothing of the story, I even watched the movie and the plot still hardly made sense to me. the game throws you into the middle of the story, its nearly impossible to understand anything while playing.

The combat is so in depth that you hold circle and occasionally press square when it tells you to. And i love not being able to use support or defensive spells. I also love the side quests that only serve the purpose of a check list rather than fleshing out any characters or world at all. yeah its a GREAT game.

You perfectly described my experience with this game. It slowly grew on me just the same and by the time my journey was over, I had just over 90 hours invested into the game. I agree though, let's get back to the roots of the franchise.

  • @alienxmz

for such a big open world it lacked something nobody noticed, cities and towns. theres only one 1 town to explore in this game (2 if you count the time-skip) and the biggest city everyone wanted to explore (which is notic's home) cannot be explored due to the plot. but at least these guys didn't hesitate to give us as many restaurants and gas stations as possible :/

Never played FF XII? So many people look past that one but it's great. Xenoblade Chronicles reminded me of it a lot. I really need to get this one soon. Was really put off by the demos but the final game seems to be just such a mixture of randomness that i feel like I should give it a shot.

Completely agree with your closing sentiments, but I did not have such a good time with XV. I really disliked the combat, getting stuck in walls and not knowing what I was doing as I just held down a button and then eventually won.
I felt no real connection to any of the main characters because I hadn't watched the anime and film, and I felt like I was being punished for just wanting to play the game and expecting things like character development and little backstories to be told within it instead of outside of it.
Summons only coming in at random, and magic being basically pointless also hurt things, and the fact that there were only a few sidequests that were repeated over and over and over got a little boring.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it Dave, but it's just not for me. And the fact that upcoming patches are going to make the story better is just a slap in the face when I got and played the game on release.
I wish I wasn't, but I'm worried about the direction the franchise is heading rather than optimistic.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I was a big fan of the series until after FFX, then I started getting burned out of it. The characters look like JPop rejects, lol.
Final Fantasy VI is my favorite of the series in general.

    • @mastermarkus5307

The JPop, host-club-looking guys are what made me initially uninterested in the 3D Final Fantasys in the first place. I wasn't aware that "Japanese teen girl" was their target audience. I miss characters like those in FFVI who had designs that made sense in a fantasy world and looked fairly like normal people.

  • @kraukrau

My impression of FF XV is that this game is just half of the game. If only the Kingsglaive story is included and playable in the game, or as Dave said it, if only there's a part of the game showing us the Insomnia and the relationship between Noctis and his father the whole game can be much better. And also there's the problem with the load time.
But seriously, Dave. You didn't play FF XII? I know the story is a bit meh, but the gameplay dude. The Gambits system saves Final Fantasy that day.

the ten years without sun was the most absurd thing i've ever seen in a game.
the world should have become a cold desert because the animals and plants would have died.
unless the people in the cities had being eating artificial food, they would die as well.
but instead of this apocalyptic scenario, the world stood basicaly the same like it had being passed only two days.

This seems like a fair review , you have a personality that I do indeed enjoy. You made me chuckle a couple of times and you made me end up subscribing, but here's the thing. I can't agree with you that this is a good Final Fantasy game. You make many excuses for it. Final Fantasy has always been about the story, the world, the characters etc... So the fact that you have to watch content to understand XV's story is just bad for a " game". You even said it " why isn't this stuff in the game"? Not only that but the game is incomplete. They definitely cut content from the game, which is why they're coming out with these DLC story packs trying to fix the story. Luna's story is a joke. The game play requires no strategy at all, you can even hold one of the buttons down and dodge everything. The side quests are nothing but fetch quests. All this makes sense when Tabata himself came out and said that he intended to treat this game as a service and that's what's he's doing. This isn't clearly the quality of games I was used to seeing Square dish out back in the day. They definitely lost their touch and it does make me worried for the future, because even though I enjoyed XII, The entire XIII trilogy was garbage and this game wasn't any better.

Why does everyone say stuff like this? "a broken masteriece". Why? Theres nothing glorious about how this game was released. Its literally just a MESS. We were ripped off and given a half finished and bland product in every aspect. Even the gameplay. People are giving a half finished product credit where it isnt even due. This game doesnt deserve it.

The problem is the fear that if they reject this game and the business practices that come from Square Enix that they won't get their "fix" when in fact you are telling them that they can do better and create a change. But if SE didn't have brand recognition they would have gotten torn to shreads after doing what they did with XV. And now we as gamers just told them its okay to get an unfinished product and then pay for the rest. Saldy this is how gaming has become anytime you hear words like new audience and accessibility expect your game to be taken apart to get those gamers non informed to buy dlc and other things. Final Fantasy since 12 has taken a nose dive with the long dev cycles as a away to drum up hype to sell while new players don't notice older players do. But as long as they keep getting money they know not to change but continue " Games as a Service". Also reviewers like this one don't want to hurt their bottom-line and are on a the hive-mindset. If others don't like it then they won't like it. When they use terms like Glorious mess and unfinished then toss that aside and continue to praise it. Let EA or Activision do this pitch forks and torches.

Magic is actually pretty darn OP in this game. There are certain item combinations which give insane damage! Plus, there's a lv99 dungeon where you cannot use items (So no healing and phoenix downs). But if you make healing magic (with maximum strength healing) then you pretty much made an elixir that deals damage

Loved this, one of the best reviews out there. :) I completely agree about the story, it was pretty much impossible to understand what was going on unless you watched the movie first. It feels like they took out all the good cutscenes from the game and made a movie out of it.
The only thing I disagree about is the music, it felt really bland at times compared to the iconic and epic music of past titles.

In regards to the name rant for Prince Noctis, it would have been so EASY with this game especially. Name him whatever you want and everyone can call him Prince, or Prince (last name) or some nickname they gave him growing up or something. I mean FF10 had a completely voiced MC whose official name was Tidus but you could name him whatever you wanted since no one calls him by name. Noctis would have been so easy

I do like the review, Dave, but if I may have one counter argument. As much as I understand your point about naming the main character, usually I feel the main character doesn't have much to do with the story because characters don't interact with them directly.I think BioShock is the one occasion where it actually worked. But it bothered me so much in X when characters talk to Tidus and never mention him by name. Personally, I'd rather have the character be fully fleshed than me "becoming" a character and my immersion compromised.

But replaying FF7 right now on the PS4 made me appreciate this game even more I hated I had to watch Brotherhood and Kingsglaive to get major plot points and Chapter 13 I dont need to say more . Haven't finished 15 yet, about 10 - 20 hours in. Waaaaaaay better than the 13 trilogy and does a lot to point the series back in the right direction...doesn't live up to the likes of FF6 or FF9, but Square's heart is in the right place.
For me the only MAJOR gripe I have is the combat system which I'm juuust not gelling with. It's too automatic, chaotic and I miss the micromanagement and mentally stimulating depth of the old turn-based engines!

That Stand by Me music makes me think about Stand By Me movie ( And the game being about friends, I think it was actually intentional )
The only reason I have given this FF a try is because it is not turn based , I used to like turn based Jrpgs but I have grown tired of it.
I like the combat a lot, and this is my first FF game since FFIX

Hey Dave! I REALLY appreciate your honest review. FF9 was the end for me. I tried playing FF15, but not my thing. Here's looking to FF16..

Completely agree that all that story should have been in the game. The fact that everything you say from 8.28 isn't explained in the game properly is ridiculous! We just get that cutscene that is more confusing than anything (if you've not watched the movie).

I am waiting on FF15 for PC, but to your comment at the end, I love FF14 and before that FF11. Yes they are online subscription based games but brings you back to that medevil style gameplay with FF6 elements(FF14 has Magitek mount).

Penny Peach Hmmm no it wasn't. Sakaguchi and the rest of the gang aren't even with the company anymore, only Nomura and he's the one ruining these games taking decades to actually finish them.

Great review! I gotta say I had no interest in 15 despite being a lifelong FF fan. You definitely conveyed that there are things to love about 15. Maybe it's worth a try.

Great review, i think all the positive and negative points of the game are shown in it. I think, that Square-Enix wont do a turnbased main FF game anymore. Just because it doesnt attract the main source of people like it did 10-15 years ago anymore (see in the low sales of World of FF). I think they will stick to turnbased rpg on the handheld market with good games like the Bravely series.

I am also a video game hoarder. I can't handle systems that make me constantly consume shit just for a basic feature like magic, or ranged weapons.
