I think my favorite thing about this video is that even though I was born before Dave, it turns out that he's actually older than me. At least Tangent-Dave™️ is 😁
I always thought it was a simple process conceptually. Make game with fun content. Play and beat game. "Oh, I got something fun for beating it?" Play game again and see what else happens. Next game releases. Buy next game because first game was fun. How did we get here?
Any fleeting interest I had in this remake went out the window as soon as microtransactions were mentioned. It’s almost as if this was an aborted mobile/tablet project that Square-Enix decide to throw onto Switch because it’s basically the same tech. Shame, too, because more kart racers would be a good thing.
So awesome to see a new video, completely agree with you, sometimes I feel so disconnected from modern gaming, the younger generation grew up with cell phone games so this is what they’re used to, remember when smash bros ultimate came out and you had to actually play the game to unlock the characters and people were complaining as to why you couldn’t just simply buy them?
When I saw this game being announced about 2 months back, I was legit so hyped and excited about it, being am absolute fan of the good old Chocobo Racing (I played so much that I had perfect scores on the Story Mode and used the perfect scores to make a perfect stats racer for each Racer Sprite. Like a perfect score Chocobo, perfect score Bahamut etc.) I bought Switch 3 months ago, and this game is the very reason why I put off buying Mario Kart. Now, it looks like I have no choice but to go buy Mario Kart. Not because I want to. But because Square-Enix has fallen so low as to use this mobile phone game business model on a fully paid game. It is just simply unacceptable.
I love when Dave gets fired up. Thanks for calling out SQEX on their crap. As you said, we are the target demographic.... who better to tell them when they screw up? !fart
Not gonna lie; I was SO EXCITED when this game was announced and I didn't even play the original Chocobo Racing but damn they ruined it with these microtransactions. If you could earn Cloud and Squall as well as all the other stuff with tickets and gil I'd be fine with it but nooooo, they had to throw even more garbage microtransactions into this.
I'm wary of developing loyalty to software companies. Only Square games I've played & enjoyed are Super Mario RPG, Secret of Evermore, and 3D Worldrunner
If you have not played and/or enjoyed both Final Fantasy VI or Chrono Trigger, there is something very very very wrong with you. Also the last two games you mentioned, Evermore and World Runner are legit trash.
@@the-NightStar While FFVI is one of my favorite games of all time (and inspired me to play numerous other RPGs), I _also_ loved Secret of Evermore when it released. Something about the often melancholy soundtrack, the brooding atmosphere, and - if I'm being overly specific - firing a bazooka at the face of a giant rat in a largely-abandoned castle-town endeared me to the game forever. In fact, I _continue_ to have more affection for SoE than I ever had for Secret of Mana on the same console - the latter being something I enjoyed more through the pages of Nintendo Power than I ever did with a controller in my hands. And if _that_ wasn't already perplexing enough to hear: I merely _rented_ Chrono Trigger this one time and never went back. I certainly didn't _hate_ it, and I respect it as a collaboration between talented individuals and developers. Regardless, in the _twenty-seven_ intervening years, I never returned to Chrono Trigger to give it a proper playthrough. I spent more time with the quirky Enix-published _Robotrek_ and, god help me, the SNES port of _Drakkhen_ than I ever spent with Chrono Trigger.
So in your oh-so-mature and intelligent move to shun this company's catalogue to avoid potential disappointments like a new Chocobo Racing that's just average instead of slightly above average like the old one, you've missed somewhere around the order 100 or so of the greatest video games of all time and now are acting all smug about it online. Radical!
This saddens me since I was hoping to buy Chocobo GP in the future. What happened with unlocking characters and cars if you play regularly or the story mode? Then making this game Nintendo Switch exclusive is also bad. I guess wanting to see other characters I like from Final Fantasy 10 or 15 is not going to happen.
Wow, Cloud was just 5.99 $ with a stage and at least two songs in Smash Wii U/3DS. This is just crazy, and I really want him in that game, but wow, I guess I'm just not gonna buy the game overall and forget it exists.
Disgusting but not surprising. This is the same company where it’s president believes NFTs are the future and must be normalized in video games. This is a publisher that I no longer wish to support.
You can't even buy Squall with in game currency unless you literally pay 50 dollars to unlock the ability to buy him Cloud was in the original now he's time locked being a huge paywall and time gate
Love that we pay for switch online when it literally doesn’t host any single server for games..So we get these stupid bullshit “can’t connect to other console” errors ALOT. Smash bros all the time as well. I don’t mind additions added to a game after launch, but it needs to come out complete enough…
This is why I stay loyal to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Sure, the DLC costs 24.99, but you only pay once and you get 48 tracks for it, no additional costs. I was interested in Chocobo Racing, but this is outrageous. I wonder how Caddicarus feels about this (he was furious about the CTR microtransaktions).
Im 41 and have fond memories of playing video games on a Genesis and Sega CD and later on on the PlayStation 1. it's very sad to see how video games have become incomplete experience.
Well you can diddy kong racing beat mario 64 if diddy kong racing became a series it would be better then mario kart. Honestly the next gimmck they should add to mario kart is plane and boat racing.

Same. I'm trying to make lemonade out of my lemons by enjoying the game and not spending any additional money, but Square really did make the entire thing into a money grab. All the best stuff anyone would actually want is behind paywalls.
@@bluemidnight5926 I agree, Same here the core game is actually fun! 🤝 But it's held back by Square Enix greed. Be nice if they listen to fan feedback, they could update the game where It's not difficult to unlock things, wishful thinking, but they should just do away with the paywalls lol 😅
@@hyrulegend9786 Yeah, agreed. If the game was free, I wouldn't mind paying for some stuff here and there. Heck, I like the game enough to continue buying race passes, but charging 49.99 and then putting a price on everything else in the store is beyond scummy, and it makes me wish I could get a refund. If Square doesn't figure this out, this game will die a quick death, especially with Mario Kart's DLC right around the corner.
@@bluemidnight5926 I agree again, lol 🤝Big Mario Kart fan here! I'll definitely playing those new tracks. I personally never spend money on those free to play type games, but I'll sink in some time to unlock things. But yeah CRGP has plenty of potential , It's just with all the microtransactions it's going to turn a lot of people away unfortunately.
@@hyrulegend9786I hear you on all that. And after spending 50 bucks, you should be able to do just that (unlock cool stuff w/o paying extra). It seems like putting out a quality product is a tactic to these microtransaction games now. I remember when these money grab games first started, you could spot them from a mile away just from their cheap aesthetic. There was a time where you could REALLY tell when a game was all about microtransactions. Now though, microtransaction games are made by these big companies, and they're legit good games, which draws people into the trap. I actually got to play the demo before I bought CRGP, and the production value, gameplay, and overall charming presentation of the game sold me immediately. I splurged on it after my first race, and it wasn't until afterwards that I discovered how much of a microtransaction mess the whole thing was. You really have to watch out these days, cause these companies have leveled up their trap game. They'll make something absolutely great, give you a little taste, then try to hook you.
So you paid to own the game and you'll also need to pay to play the game and unlock stuffs? That's robbery. I love the PS1 Chocobo Racing and played hours and hours with it since I love Final Fantasy and that's how I think a Final Fantasy racing game should be even though there are issues like imbalance between abilities and vehicles, rubber banding, etc. But at least there's no paywall there! This GP is a disappointment, what a way to ruin someone's childhood.
16:23 - I fully support earning in-game rewards like the good ol' days. I remember playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 on PS2, and there was an in-game shop that used in-game currency to unlock more characters and stuff. At some point, the game went missing, maybe sold at a yard sale or some shenanigans, but later, as an adult, I used my own money to buy MvC2 on Xbox 360. I thought to myself "Oh yeah! Here we go again! Maybe this time I'll unlock all the characters! Can't wait to find out who they are!" I downloaded the game, booted it up, and jumped into Arcade mode, ready to earn some points, and... there they all were. All the characters. Just ready to go. This put a sour taste in my mouth, and I honestly haven't launched the game since then. I didn't feel there was any point anymore. A similar thing happened more recently to Mario Kart fans with Mario Kart 8 for Switch. Bring back rewards for gameplay, rather than rewards for stealing mommy's credit card.
I had heard of some of this. I wasn't fully convinced to buy that $25 MK8D DLC, but this news garenteed it. Sadly microtransactions have been popping up in full price SE games since Bravely Default 3DS, maybe even earlier. That said I held off buying Triangle Strategy just in case, and I am going to buy it once it comes back in stock. Lol so no, S-E is not dead, but much of the company has sunk into the swamp to forever be boycotted and rot away.
And also IF Square where to TRULLY apologies they should of give all players the DLC characters for free instead of currency since the currency will disappear regardless.
I was super hyped for this given I never got the chance to play the original Chocobo Racing but have vague memories of my older sibling playing it on their PS1, but as soon as I saw everything that was shoved in my face after booting up the lite version I felt a part of me die inside, which sucks because I really love the chocobo spinoff games, with tales and dungeon- was even super psyched when the chocobo appeared in the Omega quest line from FF14 but this just really disappoints me. Again it sucks cus I even hyped up some for my friends to play this with me that are getting in to FF but that ain't gonna happen now...
It really could have been great. The game is a legit blast and the controls are tight, plus it's oozing with charm. If they would have made this free to play, people would have gladly bought a season pass along with some stuff here and there. Final fantasy is the pinicle of mainstream, combined with the install base of Kart racing lovers that are on the Nintendo Switch, this could have hit levels of greatness the likes of FF14. Every season new stages and characters and a fair progression system? Man, it could have been great. Like, give Mario Kart a run for its money kinda great.
This is the reactions I had on my stream when I played this too. I of course buckled and bought cloud immediately. It’s sad what they did to it and I don’t know what other characters they could have after blowing their load with cloud and squall day one. I heard square apologized and said they would make it less Crazy to get characters, the next day I notice those Chocobo costumes were 100 mythril less. So gross
Amen Brother Dave, the new model for companies is... No more Physical, all DLC, keep mining the customer for extra content till their a dried up husk, and then take the game down only to rerelease it 5 years later to start the cycle all over again 😤
Yeah I'm REALLY happy i tried the Free Lite version and after everything you said about unlocking characters I'm pretty sure i'm not buying the full game now. I just thought purchasing the game would allow you to Level Up to get Cloud, but if i have to BUY the chance to get Cloud before the season ends then... no thank you. This is incredibly gross. So THANK YOU for explaining the nonsense and bull crap micro transaction mess that is this game, another Square-Enix game I will not be getting if they have no intention of giving me what i paid for.
Square is so fucking weird today. On the one hand they release some genuinely fresh, unique games - Triangle Strategy, the Live-a-Live remake, Isle Dragon Roars, the Nier series... Then they do something like this, which makes you want to hate the company as a whole.
Microtransactions, currency that can expire, limited time characters. This isn't my phone it's the Nintendo Switch Gosh Darn it! Forget this piece of garbage!
It's looking a lot worst then what crash nitro fueled did. Though not required to purchase the story (basically) the lite version is very limited and the characters available is unbalanced. The grind for level is still ridiculously high even when you win a GP. It's really bad
That white Squaresoft logo with a little bit of red, and some relaxing piano/harp music in the background? That's gone, it doesn't exist anymore. Squenix ate it.
The game actually gets more predatory after you break past level 100 in the season pass. After level 100, they raise the level requirement by 50 points every time you level up. I'm currently at prize level 122, and at that level, it takes 2700 points to reach the next rank. Honestly, from levels 1-100, it wasn't even that bad. Although it still felt like unfair nonesense when I found myself out of XP boosters, that only happened to me one time. The prize pass actually kept me pretty well stocked with stickers, granted there was a lot of pressure on me to not lose races which sucked, but it was doable (but NOT forgivable). I guess the people at SquareEnix realized that it might have been a bit on the fair side to keep the level requirment at 1600 points, and they don't like anything fair, so after level 100 they start jacking up the requirment to get you to visit their store. This game is a blast, but the company behind it is so gross. As far as I'm concerned, my prize pass is already complete. I'm just going to keep enjoying the game as if the rest of that grind didn't even exist. Past level 100, it's nothing but extra vehicle colors and backgrounds anyway, but still, they knew what they were doing with this and it's despicable.
I agree this is all horrible but also, it was not a secret before release so why would you give them your money and support these terrible practices? I also loved the original and was so pumped for this game until I saw what this actually was. I refuse to partake in this. If they release a full version in a year with everything included and no more mobile nonsense, maybe.
How was the game doing now? I'm actually glad they fixed the online matching, I played the lite version but until now I'm not convinced if I should buy the game. if they still push paid race pass at least make the game fully free. anyways, I just checked Chocobo GP on youtube after visited their Japanese twitter.. they had 11k followers before and now 9.5k, seems like many left the game for good.

"Why can't we bring back the days of EARNING rewards?"
Profound words.
@@the-NightStar evermore gets a bad rep. It's a good game overshadowed by the false claim that we got it instead of the mana sequel
Radical!
Yet another reminder of why I don't play modern video games. It's just constant Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) bullshit.
FAMICORNER! MY KINGDOM FOR A NEW EPISODE OF FAMICORNER!
I absolutely loved CR. My favorite cart racer....this completely KILLED my interest in GP. How did they screw this up so badly?!
Greed.
Mario Kart 8 new booster dlc will dig forever Chocobo GP.
OMG YOU'RE STILL ALIVE!
Your production values are top notch! please make more videos!
I enjoy your content a lot. I would really like to see the Suikoden 2 retrospective you mentioned a long time ago.
Dave after Dark (censored version)
Wow, Cloud was just 5.99 $ with a stage and at least two songs in Smash Wii U/3DS. This is just crazy, and I really want him in that game, but wow, I guess I'm just not gonna buy the game overall and forget it exists.
Disgusting but not surprising. This is the same company where it’s president believes NFTs are the future and must be normalized in video games. This is a publisher that I no longer wish to support.
The Mytrill expires faster than my ketchup.
Welcome back!! Corporate Commander strikes again with Chocoholic GP!! Lame!
You can't even buy Squall with in game currency unless you literally pay 50 dollars to unlock the ability to buy him
Cloud was in the original now he's time locked being a huge paywall and time gate
Love that we pay for switch online when it literally doesn’t host any single server for games..So we get these stupid bullshit “can’t connect to other console” errors ALOT. Smash bros all the time as well. I don’t mind additions added to a game after launch, but it needs to come out complete enough…
Dat Dave Beard is so perfect for reviews😃 And I like your style of how you're acting in front of the camera🙂😆
I doubt this shit would fly on Steam.
Im 41 and have fond memories of playing video games on a Genesis and Sega CD and later on on the PlayStation 1. it's very sad to see how video games have become incomplete experience.
Sad how Japanese companies have lost their values and just given up.
I'm pretty sure From Software has kept touch with them.
This game just proves that when it comes to kart racers, you just cannot beat the almighty Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, especially now with the new DLC.
Well you can diddy kong racing beat mario 64 if diddy kong racing became a series it would be better then mario kart. Honestly the next gimmck they should add to mario kart is plane and boat racing.
thank you for telling me about the vampire movie starring jim carrey, and giving me the title immediately. i was anxious to find out, but now i have serotonin coursing thru me.
Dammit Dave, i was worried about ya. Welcome back my friend.
They have to make up for Avengers and Babylon's Fall, freaking clowns.
I appreciate that you sprinkle food for thought throughout your videos. You have quite an artful and unique approach at doing it, and it makes your content stand out.
I like sprinkles....im gonna go to the grocery store....get me some rainbow sprinkles...put em on some butter pecan ice cream...make me some chamomille tea....MM!
appreciate you keeping it real about these ridiculous microtransactions. I really hope they get removed so we can all actually enjoy this game.
I sadly bought this before doing research 🤦🏻♂️🔥I feel the same ! Awesome video!
Look at Dave bringing us the Chocobo Hat Dave skin for no extra charge.
I miss your stuff bud. Thanks for dropping by!
Convoluted currencies and microtransactions are some olympic level bullshit.
Can't wait to find out who they are!"
I downloaded the game, booted it up, and jumped into Arcade mode, ready to earn some points, and... there they all were.
Theirs a difference between selling a game unfinished and shoving up doors and keys to buy to unlock them. Shameful square.
So gross
At least Square Enix did apologize.
Just wait till they start adding waifus into the game.
I purchased the game.
…did not realize they would be aggressive with microtransactions.
"Well gas is 4.00 a gallon" in your chat during late night game dave streaming made me crack up because it's so true and sad.
Amen Brother Dave, the new model for companies is... No more Physical, all DLC, keep mining the customer for extra content till their a dried up husk, and then take the game down only to rerelease it 5 years later to start the cycle all over again 😤
So happy to see a video of yours again! Keep up the good work.
Game Dave: "Dont buy anything from this game"
Me: *buying all 3 chocobo skins*
oh well... i think I just f up
Yeah I'm REALLY happy i tried the Free Lite version and after everything you said about unlocking characters I'm pretty sure i'm not buying the full game now. I just thought purchasing the game would allow you to Level Up to get Cloud, but if i have to BUY the chance to get Cloud before the season ends then... no thank you. This is incredibly gross. So THANK YOU for explaining the nonsense and bull crap micro transaction mess that is this game, another Square-Enix game I will not be getting if they have no intention of giving me what i paid for.
black mage chocobo looks so cute, i am curious ill be playing for the first time next month
Angry Game Dave? Yes, please! More!! 🔥
What a mess to the game, just like playing mobile games as i do. 😦
Cover your ears, guys, Dave is talking rude, at least censored with Chocobo sounds.
"Digital Peer Pressure" is spot on and really puts it into perspective for the newer generation of gamers.
_I agree with Gamer David._ 👍✨
This is one of those games I would not even want to play if I get it as a pirated version.
"God bless America's Jesus"
Apparently America just dropped Jesus of Nazareth.
I understand you
I agree this is all horrible but also, it was not a secret before release so why would you give them your money and support these terrible practices? I also loved the original and was so pumped for this game until I saw what this actually was. I refuse to partake in this. If they release a full version in a year with everything included and no more mobile nonsense, maybe.
How was the game doing now? I'm actually glad they fixed the online matching, I played the lite version but until now I'm not convinced if I should buy the game. if they still push paid race pass at least make the game fully free.
anyways, I just checked Chocobo GP on youtube after visited their Japanese twitter.. they had 11k followers before and now 9.5k, seems like many left the game for good.
I am so glad to see You again, Gamer David! Totally on Your side about this game's quality. This is just abomination of a game!
⚪💙⚪ #stopwar #нетвойне 💙💛
TBH, you are lucky its not NTFs on a block chain.
Yo Dave! Hope everything is well with ya brother!
Found game Dave through gam chasers. Absolutely love him
