Tumbbad is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language historical period Fantasy film directed by debutant Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad. Anand Gandhi, best known for the National Award winning film Ship of Theseus, brought it together as a creative director.
Tumbbad is produced by Sohum Shah, Aanand L Rai, Mukesh Shah and Amita Shah. The film stars Sohum Shah in the lead role. Ajay Atul composed the title track of the film while the original score is by BAFTA award winner, Jesper Kyd. Anand Gandhi serves as the co-writer, executive producer and creative director of the film. A motion poster of the film was released on 4 July 2018. Another poster was released on 20 August 2018. It was followed by the launch of the teaser trailer on 21 August 2018. The official theatrical trailer of the film was released on 25 September 2018. The film was critically acclaimed and was considered genre defining cinema.

This movie is so damn underrated. It took 6 years to make this masterpiece. But it only earned only 13 crores. Hum sirf nepotism ko he blame nhi kr skte. Sir, You said there was no requirement of Sadashiv in this movie. But I think Sadashiv had an important role. Because Sada felt from tree, Vinayak's mother took him to hospital. And that night Vinayak was alone at home. This gave him a chance to get close to dadi. And dadi inspired him more for the khajana. He became more curious about the khajana and the whole story started for the greed of khajana. Hence, I think Sada's chjaracter was introduced to give a chance to Vinayak to get involved with dadi. Otherwise whenever Vinayak's mother stays at home, he does not get chance to talk to dadi.

Greed was always a thing in this family. I feel the sadashiv's character did play an important role. In the movie they're sitting on a branch and talking when he falls, the mother is trying her best to take him to the doctor in the dark rainy night on a bullokcart where on the way the looses him, the pain the grief that the mother had on loosing her son meanwhile vinayak has to deal with the nightmare of feeding his grandmother where he has his first scary encounter. When his mother decided to leave even then in the middle of the whole loss of his brother he is so concerned about thr khazana as a child refeccts alot on his character. And even after his mother asks him to promise him to not return to tummbad. He breaks it. Obviously for the greed. It all reflects on his character. Its really well written.
Also sadashiv was bought to haster by his mother to make him alive

The brother's purpose in chapter one was simply being a sacrificial character that made his mother realize her mistake.
Also, the entire purpose of the non-stop rain in tumbad was to extingush any form of fire which was the only way to free the Immortals from their curse.

I thought they left Tumbbad not bcoz the younger brother died but bcoz the old man died, the mother got the gold coin and since she is scared, she did not want anything to do with Tumbbad after that.
My two cents:
1) I don't think Sadashiv's role was a plot hole at all. His presence highlights Vinayak's selfishness and greed. Vinayak willingly puts his innocent brother in danger by pushing him to serve a meal for the undead grandma. When Sadashiv dies, Vinayak keeps talking about the treasure instead of grieving his brother's death. And Sadashiv's death leads to the first terrifying confrontation between young Vinayak and the grandma.
(Also, I don't think a superfluous character is called a plot hole.)
2) The mother's decision to leave Tumbadd is not a result of Sadashiv's death. She announces her plans right after Sarkar dies.
3) IMO, Vinayak's mother wasn't necessarily greedy. She may have become Sarkar's mistress simply because she was a poor widow with no social support. Yes, she stole the gold coin after Sarkar's death but then she had two kids to support, without a man. Actually, she mentions in the boat that Vinayak inherited his greed from his father, i.e. Sarkar.

The only reason for including sadasiv(Vinayak's brother) is that, he was the reason due to which vinayak faced his dadi.... Otherwise his mother never let them go near the room... Agar sadasiv ghayal nahi hota to vinayak ko budhiya ko kabhi khana nahi khilana nahi padta n wo kabhi usse nahi milta.

This movie is based on a real story. Tumbbad is village in Maharashtra, many kilometers away from Mumbai. This movie was actually shot in Tumbbad. The people residing in Tumbbad say that there is actually some sort of ancestral treasure in Tumbbad.

I think Sadashiv was there just to show to "Khazane ka naam lena bhi ashubh hai". Then, he dies so mother realizes how unlucky was to think about the treasure
Mujhe ek small disagreement hai apse regarding the plothole in part 1. logic of Sadashiv in the first part was as follows:
1. His death is what made the mother realise that her greed was so wrong.
2. If Sadashiv would not have Died then there would not have been any compelling reason for the mother to leave the child to feed the dadi.
3. If dadi could not have been shown in such a manner as it was shown, we would not have realised how greedy Vinayak was from Childhood that he could even risk his life to such an extent to know about the treasure.
4. The movie also got a chance to show us a glimpse that even though Vinayak ‘s real brother had died, he didn’t even get slightly affected because he was so blinded by the greed.
This is my personal opinion, movie would have been incomplete without Sadashiv and his death.

Sadashiv was important cos 1. To mke the mother more determined to get out of tumbaad.
2. To create a plot whr vinayak is left alone with his grandmother.
And also sadashiv's mother took him to hastar to make him immortal
Shadshiv was also a crucial part,conversation with him and vinayak make story clear and interesting...also he made his mom understand a few things...
Not to forgot his accident resulted into vinayak being alone at home with responsibility of feeding.
There were many hastar when they took many dolls .. it signifies the greed is insatiable ..and the point of sadashiv being in movie is as you said first genration's (vinyak's mother) eyes were opened by death of sadashiv ,vinayak's son's eyes were opened by death of vinayak ... As far as vinayak goes his eyes never opened he traded his life not for his son's but for gold . Truly a masterpiece of a movie.
He traded his life for the son, dude. He tried to show the sacrifice in the previous attempt too. You're overthinking about it. Regarding Sadashiv, his death was important since Vinayak got to confront the Dadi alone because and thus he learnt few things due to it. Check my comment on this video stating what are those things.

i m very lucky that i watched this film in theater...
Vinayak's brother was probably training to get inside that cave as well and that's why he was learning to climb on a tree but during the process he messed up and got injured only to be dead ultimately.
His importance was also that his death only lead the mother to realise her greed. If he didn't exist let alone die then she would have continued being greedy and not given any promises to Vinayak about never going to tumbbaad.
I think that's why he was important in this movie so his presence is really not a plot-hole

And remember Vinayak also had extra marital affair in the movie and was living like Sarkar so it could be the way to tell audience about how his mother was also in relation with Sarkar. And also the brothers used to call Sarkar's mother "Dadi" and thats another clue. And other than that why would Vinayak's mother took care of the old lady, if it wasnt for Sarkar telling her the truth about treasure and he wants to keep her alive. So I think Sarkar and Vinayak's mother were in illegitimate relationship. And thats y villagers didnt knew about this and she didnt had to follow Sati.

Tumbbad is a cult classic .... it was a commercial flop ... But man!!!! What deep layers it has ... layers that run deeper than the womb of the Earth goddess (read further...)
1. Hastar has gold and stays inside earth because gold lies deep in the earth. But grains and crops grow above the soil. Hastar is forbidden to touch food as food can be shared among people and satisfy people's need. But gold creates something more than need. It creates greed.
Hastar was so greedy that it had a choice to jump towards grains first. But it went for gold. A choice that became its curse.
Just like in Harry Potter Voldemort chose his own death when he decided to attack baby Harry first (he had a choice between Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom)
2. Risk is always required with greed. Sarkar (the old man who fathered Vinayak) was not courageous. But Vinayak (during his childhood and after his mother dies when he is grown up) seeks monster Grandma and asks her about the treasure. His brave nature convinces her about his inherently greedy nature and hence she tells him about her secret treasure. Remember she never tells that to her own son Sarkar because Sarkar was timid.
3. Indian independence is not merely a narrative device it is a metaphor of young India (pandurang) achieving freedom from age old Colonial greed (ancestral curse of greediness that runs in Gradma, Vinayak and Pandurang).
4. When Grandma tries to eat boy Vinayak in the hut because she cannot touch grain (Hastar's curse spreads to humans too), so she needs to be fed like how Hastar needs dough dolls as offering. She cannot cook also.
Thats why when Vinayak is covered with flour due to kitchen mishap, she doesn't touch him due to the spread out grain flour. She locks his ankle using chains and drags him along to her room and fixes him to the potty bed to unscrew her mouth (which is shut so that she can not bite people) to eat him directly, without touching his flour covered body.
Eating Vinayak' head through potty hole is synonymous of an important reference (read on for the revelation...)
Meanwhile some more metaphors...

(Sarkar, the old man, tried searching all his life but couldn't find anything)

(The gods started attacking Hastar and hence the goddess of fulfillment took him back in her womb)
Explains why Hastar has a wounded blood red body. Remember that Hastar's statue is not bloody. Its actually a plump baby statue. But real Hasar is sickly and malnourished because he is starving since ages due to his curse. Bloody becuase he was attacked.
3. Hastar has gold coming out of his loincloth esp. his backside.
Generally Indians kept money in the front of their loincloth in old times. So why Hastar is like that?
Because it's an analogy of a diseased person who is always hungry and can eat piles of food at once but whatever the person eats is pooped out undigested (its called Bhasma Rog or a form of an untreatable disease called Bulimia Nervosa).
Just like Hastar, the coins coming out of backside of his loincloth are cursed... Because its literally Hastar pooping the gold out while he eats dough dolls... He not getting any nutrition from those dolls... They instantly become gold.. Hastar gets no relief... His diarrhoea continues!
If you see, in the old times, people traded grains for gold. It included people working to grow crops and then selling it in the market for money. Such transaction is termed as svarna-bhadra (auspicious gold)... But what happens in Tumbbad is simply abhadra (insidious) easy money.
Remember monster Grandma trying to eat Vinayak through the potty hole?
Poop has a deeper reference in Tumbbad.
No wonder that poop money is insidious and Pandurang eventually rejects it!
4. Why does Hastar multiply?
When gods attacked Hastar he was split into millions of particles and to save him Mother goddess took him back into her womb in his destroyed form (uncountable particles). So there are many elemental Hastars in her womb each hungry of food since ages.
They appear as per the proportion of the food offered.
Greed is infinite so is Hastar ...
I can go on and on about Tumbbad.
Tumbad surely has a potential to create a shared fictional universe of films and content. zombies, pandemic, cosmic horror, geopolitical drama... You name it and It can reach those topics if written smartly.
Tumbbad was one of the best horror movie of India..

Exactly the contrast was important. His lil brother was the opposite of greed. Yet the same night his lil brother died he was forcing his mum to talk the granny about the treasure. No remorse.
Actually he is right Sadashiv is an extra. Vinayak was talking about treasure to his mother even before Sadashiv died. After Sadashiv was cremated while leaving tumbbad on boat he says to his mother about going back

The part of Vinayak's younger brother was important, as if he does not fall from tree, Vinayak would never had encountered his grandmother alone as Vinayak's mother took his younger son for the treatment and never would have understood the treasure. So it's not a loop in a story. Earlier in story it was shown that Vinayak's mother never wanted her son to encounter their grandmother ever..

I think the point of existence of Sadashiv is that when he got injured, Vinayak got the chance to cater to his grandmother and see her/experience her. Else his mother always kept him away from her. This was psychologically instrumental when he came to her years later.
Importantly, he learned "So jao Dadi warna Hastar aa jayega". He didn't have the chance to learn this before or after this evening.
