Niall Ferguson: Donald Trump Not A Fascist But A Populist | Morning Joe | MSNBC
SNAFU vs FUBAR
As someone from the midwest this is the most accurate description of the election I have heard from MSM.
The reason Niall is breaking with the term Fascism is because Fascism can only be defined after the fact. His criticism of Trump as an Authoritarian Populist is more honest, but no less serious. The distinction in this case is the first is like thinking about or talking about breaking a window to snatch a Television, while Fascism is actually doing it.
The television in this analogy represents the rights and Freedoms of millions of law-abiding citizens. And even some who aren't law-abiding citizens. Criminals have rights too in this country. That's what makes America so great. Even the worst of us are respected as human beings. That isn't weakness. That's strength and integrity.
Scarborough will never invite Ferguson to his show again.
Dumpster donald wouldn't make past the first 100 days without impeachment proceedings commencing , bipartisan impeachment proceedings.
JA: I don't think he is too dumb once he is accepted at the role of being the boss. He will fire anybody who goes against him when it's in his 'jurisdiction' but he appears to know a modicum of how to keep things under control and what works in a given situation. The problem is that he has no control of his arrogant ways and behavior and does not know the limits of his arrogance. The conditions in which he grew up made him a sociopath. It wasn't his choice, lol. The problem is he can't learn, change, and modify his behavior, character, and small and limited mind and thinking. There was no need to do that given he was born with a gold spoon and bullied his way to age 70! He is totally unfit and dangerous. I pity him and whatever circumstances produced him... and sorry, the billions he has, the T towers and whatever he owns won't help him to change!
If Trump wins, the Republicans will control the House of Representatives. Sadly, there would be no impeachment. Happily, it appears less and less likely that Trump will win.
David Rojas It would be beyond astonishing for a Republican Presidential candidate to win the White House while that same party loses its majority in the House of Representatives. Therefore, a President Trump would enjoy a Republican majority in the House. Why would this majority vote to impeach him for anything?
bahahahaha TRUMPED! 🇺🇸
Banning people for his religion is not fascists
I'm genuinely beginning to wonder if 2015 to 2016 will forever be looked back on as the moment in American history where we finally succumbed to fascist tendencies...and did so willingly. We're not immune to that...indeed, I'd argue we're *_primed_* for it. Or at least a statistically significant portion of the electorate is primed for it. My only hope is that they constitute a relative minority. Still though....large minorities have and do cause massive change. Always have; always will. May we live in interesting times indeed....
Trump is not a populist. A populist does things for people. Trump has done nothing that but help himself. Bernie is a populist.
I like that they laugh and have not even read her policies. At least she has policies.
Trump is not a populist. Not sure what he is but he's not a populist.
You don't need to have brownshirts to be fascist. Fascism doesn't look exactly the same in all countries. What a stupid way to frame that question.
3:53 "This could to go quite well ... especially if the Russians hand him (Trump) a deal on Syria" Oh the perks of being able to look back in the past
They should replace Hillary Clinton with Bernie Sanders.
And then say goodbye to your companies.
Bernie Sanders has good judgment, integrity and experience.
Niall always speaks so well.
Trump is a self serving glory hound and may be a popularist himself with fascist leanings and not a hard core fascist as such BUT, the trouble is, he's surrounded himself with neo-fascists who already have his ear within his campaign and that's the worry.
Ask any Mexican or African-American …. the racist thing is not a light matter.
@@titusp9488 It certainly isn't, I agree! Nor should it ever be treated that way although you see far too many people trying to trivialise it, which is pathetic and contemptible.
Fubar all the way... *Chuckles
Kissenger the "idealist"? Wow, this Hoover Institute must really be the pride of Stanford.
He has said he picked the title to trigger The Guardian readers. It's why I like Niall Ferguson, he picks topics to write positively about that the crankish side of the left has adopted as its pet hates, like the British Empire, financial capitalism, the Rothschild family, Secretary Kissinger. It's a very good book actually, Niall Ferguson did meticulous research into Kissinger.
@@ekaterinakatjakurae2035 well, in that case I hope he writes on Reagan and Thatcher. They are favourite punching bag of the left.
The Canadians continue to be worried...
I would be worried too. If my elected official was a high school drama teacher.
this is almost eerie to watch in June 2021
this is a guy who should be in news he recognise trumps populism could be bad but he's not Hitler or some crazed racists so let's keep this honest and balanced
Mainstream media is in a panic Biden is toast
Ferguson compared Trump to Mussolini at one point. He's all over the place.
No matter what happens, eventually it's gonna be "SNAFUBAR"
Trump is doing what a common person would do in politics. That is the beauty of his presidency.
This guy knows exactly what he's saying. FooBar 2016!
SNAFU 2016
This man is just wrong. We face a decision between someone who can do the job and another who has no clue about that job. It's simple!
Your right, Hillary has no clue how to do the job. All she knows how to do is lie and sell out our country. Hard to sell out your country and take care of it at the same time.
and chump knows nothing!
Looks like this guy nailed it.
Obama summed this up perfectly; Bernie is a populist who has ideas with broad appeal. Trump, and Hillary for that matter, have approval ratings under 30%. Bernie dropped out with over 80%...
Niall, great series on the 20th Century.....can we now have another, "SNAFU vs FUBAR"? Just 'Please' :)
Can anyone confirm, he's using the wrong centuries right?? We're in the 21st century, not the 20th..
no because the first century started at year 1.
have they never heard of FUBAR?!?!..gawd..go live a little life you guys and then come back and tell us what is 'really' going on...jeeuz
Ferguson is wrong on most accounts. Trump is defeated in Syria. He compromised on China trade. He cannot delegate at all, but fire one guy after another.
Trump is stand-up comedian showman. Nothing serious with him. Look at guys who are behind him, they are serious.
So no brown shirts .
Sure, not. Trump is just standup-comedian, entertaining the public.
a commercial for niall...
This guy is a stealth Trump supporter. He's like 'he'll get a deal with Russia and China' and when asked 'nukes for north korea and iran' he says 'oh he won't be able to get that done'. This guy is playing chicken and there is no driver in the other car.
Ferguson is against Trump from the beginning. He is just explaining his interpretation based on the historical reference. Trump is a populist like Latin-American presidents that can turn into dictator very fast.
Saudi Arabia has Nukes. They bougth Chinese Css2 Missles and equipped them with Pakistans warhead 10 years ago-
Trump has consistently shown that he behaves worse than pundits have been able to predict. Fergusons nonchalant appraisal of a potential Trump presidency is very surprising particularly coming from an historian so fond of the counter factual.
Woops!
Lol... really!? ... I guess populous if you WHITE...
Well, is he a fascist? Let's take a look at the 14 characteristics of fascism. It's long but should answer the question.
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. 2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. 3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc. 4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution. 6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. 7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. 8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. 9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. 10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. 11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked. 12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.___Dr. Lawrence Britt

Are you ok bro?
Tomato tomahto
I'm amazed that someone with so much education & historical knowledge became a Trump apologist anyway
He wrote a book about Kissinger as an idealist? He must be some kind of neo-con.
No, he's a historian.
