I love fishing in winter. I've had some of my very best days on my local river in Central Indiana when temps pop up into the high 40's in mid February! I target deep mud bottom slack water holes adjacent to current over rip rap. I do really well with small Clausers that sink fairly quickly, dragging them slowly along the bottom and the occasional POP. I also design my own ned fly with an extended body made of flemish twisted yarn and cactus chenille, tied on a short jig hook with dumbbell eyes. Always dark drab colors like brown and olive with dark or orange flash.
That stretch of river has some giants.
It's driving me crazy watching a lefty and a righty both casting over the boat! Switch sides, you goombas! Fun video in serious mode.

Man this takes me back to my childhood fishing the warm water outlets along the Susquehanna in February/March for carp with my ol man. Some of the most exciting fishing I’ve ever done

Awesome vid Ben. I luckily got to work near a river that was loaded with smallmouth bass right when i started fly fishing, if it wasn't for my abundant success (despite my horrible casting) I might not be as addicted to fly fishing as I am. I will always love smallies.

Used to fish a discharge like this in the winter with my dad when we lived down south. It would attract a ton of striped bass. Never got to throw a fly but they sure liked little white plastic flukes.
Small mouth bass on the fly is crazy I can't wait for spring I don't really have trout near me

Or the Potomac near the power plant in February just before the small mouth pair up for spawning. The large she-fish will almost rip the rod from your hand.

Whenever you drink a pbr,you have to look at the camera and say "I'm white trash and I'm in trouble". Naw but seriously I love smallmouth bass they are amazing fighters and beautifully patterned. Pound for pound they smoke a largemouth in fighting power. Keep it up,stay safe and for the love of God drink a better beer. Oh and tight lines maaayn
