      well heres the thing, the phrase jesus akbar(which you got wrong btw, allah means god in general, not the muslim god specifically, since most Christians refer to there god as simply god, the christian version would also be allah akbar) is not the part that would offend me but the murder, when you have to tack murder onto something to make it seem bad the originals probobly not actually bad, you mightaswell be saying "oh you dont have a problem with someone saying "killing two birds with one stone" what if i said it while beating you to death with a rock?"

    • @seelcudoom1
      @seelcudoom1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      someone percieving something as bad and something being bad are two different things, your literally baseing your argument on feelings, i could walk onto a plane with a shirt that reads "i like toast" in arabic and some dumbass would think it means im part of isis, also probably the same reason people refer to him as jesus christ when speaking english despite christ being a tittle not part of his name and the proper way to say it in english would be jesus the anointed, or jesus the savior/redeemer, also no its not saying one particular view of god(particularly since again, it doesent refer to one specific view of god in the first place) is better but that god, the entity, is the greatests, which by definition as an omnipotent god, is true for any monotheistic belief

      Dave B.
      Allahu Akbar means God is greatest, as in greater than everything else. The meaning you just made up doesn't make any sense because Islam does not even acknowledge other Gods.
      As for the phrase itself, it's used multiple times during a prayer, so it's anything but surprising to have heard it near a mosque.

    This also reminded me of my favourite forum Islamophobia moment.
    I had joined a very public discussion board (not naming names) shortly before the Anders Breivik attacks. There was one particularly high-profile far-right Islamophobe on the board back in 2011 (there seem to be a hundred of them now), and he spent the entire day loudly proclaiming that it can only be Muslims responsible (he seemed to be swayed by the choice of target and the use of a car bomb as a diversionary attack - because I guess the IRA never existed).
    When it was eventually being widely circulated that the attacker was a snow-white Aryan-looking far-right Islamophobic mentalist who thought himself a Crusader of the modern era, the guy quit the board in disgust.
    Good times.

Apparently to them it's ok to brutally gun down about 80 defenseless young teenagers as long as it's done in the name of Anti-islamic thought and nationalism. Absolutely sick people. JammyD2579 my islamophobia experience IRL happened when I was in middle school. My city is called a sanctuary city cuz of its asylum status for various immigrants, so we have some middle eastern people, including Muslims, and a few families from Egypt. I went to school with one of these Egyptian-American kids in my grade, named Seif, and he was in honors, debate and chess club and was overall a pretty normal nerdy kid. Unfortunately my class also had a racist dick named Michael who would harass him and basically accuse him of being a terrorist purely for his ethnicity and religion. He was terrible to him for months, and Seif responded of course, as most people would, by being upset and insulting him back. Kinda fueled the fire unfortunately however. Eventually I got fed up with the bigotry and interrupting my attempt to catch up on math homework and I leg-swept Michael to get Seif's notebook back one day. (Don't attack bigots, kids, I had anger issues). I told Michael I did taekwondo when he said some sexist shit in response, and awhile later, Seif and some of his family members joined my dojeong. I have no idea if what I did was any impact on their decision to learn self-defense but I'm glad they did, as it may, horribly, be needed, given the state of the country.

    I'm a guy from Québec. A little bit of follow-up on that case.
    Up until last year, there were still comments and conspiracies in the right-wing groups of Québec like "La Meute" and "Storm Alliance" that Bissonette and the other muslim guy were actually lovers and that the muslim guy was probably shunned by his community and the attack was most likely planned by both but Trudeau covered-up the story to accuse the Québécois of being racists.
    Or, without being so "fanfic" about it, were still asking "where was the second shooter".
    Second shooter theory that was just born out of the lack of professionalism of TVA, our local equivalent to FOX news, who took the testimony of a guy who saw another guy entering and then fleeing the mosque, but still hanging out looking suspicious.
    The guy, Khadir, was just a passerby who saw what was going on and called the police and stayed, while keeping low profile to avoid being shot. You know, like anybody who is a witness trying to help would do.
    So they took a witness' impression of another witness and "confirmed that there was another shooter".
    So yeah, that's only ONE of the origins of the fake news that are going on in Québec about the event.
    But now, Bissonnette has finally recieved his judgement in court. He is to have life sentence without possibility of liberation for 40 years.
    The families of the victims wanted more (Because you know, families of victims ALWAYS want more for the murderer of their loved ones. That's something we always see).
    Many columnists and bloggers then used the declaration of the muslim families as a "proof" that they don't like our justice system and the just want to apply Shariah Law. Many took pity for the murderer, they gave a platform to his parents who were pleading for him and meanwhile, another man who commited a similar atrocity got life sentence without possibility of liberation for 25 years.
    The main difference: The other man who got life / 25 is 70 years old. Bissonnette is like 19. The judges decided to give the possibility of liberation taking their age into account since if you do life at 70, you'll probably die in prison anyways. But well there's another complication of contradictions between what the law says and other legal precedent.
    But islamophobes would hear none of it and many are now happy that Bissonnette is appealing his sentence.

      Why do you think Québécois has become so islamaphobic compared to Anglo Canada? Would you say it’s the tensions with Anglo Canada and the need to be different? Alt right insurgencies? Your version of Fox News? Nationalism? I’m just an American so correct me if I’m wrong and they’re on the same level as islamophobe as the rest of Canada but that was the impression I’ve gotten.

      @@briannawaldorf8485 I’m from Ontario but my entire family is Quebecois, so I know this problem first hand and have my observations and theories. I’ll try and give my take on it (please note when I say “Quebecois” or “they” from here on I’m talking about the undercurrent of Quebecois society that has a bigotry problem, so if you need to hear this in order to entertain my perspective, #notallquebeckers);
      Secularity is a core tenant of Québécois cultural identity and has been for a long time (they call it laïcité to be more specific), in the past the Catholic Church had immense power inside the province and a history of abuses has made it so that the idea of another religion taking anything close to the dominance catholicism used to have, no matter how irrational it might be, absolutely terrifying to these islamophobes , so they will discriminate with impunity to avoid that, advocating against any more Muslim immigrants, enacting laws forbidding public expression of faith in public servants, etc.
      Quebec cares about freedom FROM religion (besides the existing catholic holdovers, those are fine because they’re not new I guess), not so much freedom OF religion. If it will “protect” them from theocracy then discrimination of religious minorities is completely acceptable to them.
      In the same sense you’ll sometimes see anti-immigration sentiments in general that often end up pointed specifically at POC and can turn racist real quick. Again, assimilation is very important to them, they don’t care about accusations of cultural erasure because they’ve been primed from a history of minority status inside Canada to do anything to preserve *their* culture (others be damned), any possible sign of attack from English Canada or other “outsiders” is met with harsh pushback, so because I’m from English Canada I can’t call their racists racist without being an “anti-Quebec imperialist” and the new arrivals can’t voice their concerns without being “ungrateful for what they’ve been given”.
      To sum it up, Quebec has been treated like garbage through most of their history (and only better, not good, into the present day), which makes them irrationally careful of more mistreatment to the detriment of the minorities within the minority that is Quebec.
      They are the bullied kid who has become a bully to protect themselves and anyone who calls them out on it must also be secretly against them. It reminds me a lot of (at a MUCH smaller scale and in a way less deadly way, mind you) how Israel can act so terribly to the Palestinians despite the history of their own people.
      Hurt people hurt people, and that’s true for groups of people too.

Idk how you reduce religions, but this is definitely not it. I live in a muslim dominated society and it's not the best because religion, but it's definitely not like these people try to spread it as. If anything, I'm respected for my minority and you get treated "specially" in times of crises. Islam is problematic but all religions are. Forcing them will only make them more religious, not less.

    I'm just starting to learn Arabic, in part because it's a simply beautiful language and in part because where I currently live is right in the middle of a pretty Muslim community and it just seems like a nice thing to do. Naturally, learning the language has come with learning (some of) the culture, and I was genuinely surprised when I learned how common it is for people to say allah akbar. I mean, it just means "god is great", and given that Muslims are pretty religious (almost like I'm _defining the group by their religion_ or something) that particular expression of faith comes up a lot. It's virtually every time something good happens, _or_ they want something good to happen. For example, a lady in front of me at the grocery store found her credit card after a few frantic minutes of searching, and muttered it. It's just the Muslim equivalent to "thank God". I... don't really know, in retrospect, why it surprised me so much.
    Incidentally, as you can no doubt tell, I'm not Muslim. If I've misunderstood, please correct me.

In it, the author talks about how, in social settings, a prophecy being proven wrong by the facts (e.g: "UFOs will land on X date" and when that date comes, they don't) can make people double down on their beliefs; inside their sense-making, they justify the failure of what they were hoping for to materialize in a way that even that failure confirms that what *they* believe is correct.

    This is why it's quite literally impossible to argue effectively with some people, especially a group of anonymous people who can all individually change the goalposts each time their cornered. It's the same thing with flat earthers (although at least FE's don't try to defend a murderous son of a bitch), you can debunk each of their arguments and they'll just keep churning through their infinite supply of bad, poorly researched arguments. Eventually you're forced to give up in order to be productive and despite them losing every single debate in the process, they still feel like they came out on top

      On a more serious note, because I keep coming back to this thought - how shortsighted do you have to be to take one name that sounds like it belongs to a white person, and one pretty likely to be a Muslim fellow, and conclude that the white dude must have been the witness and the Muslim guy the shooter? At a MOSQUE? You know, because so many non-Muslims go to pray at mosques.
      But naturally simple analysis is absolutely lost on alt-right communities because it doesn't suit their narratives.
