Luke even though you talk over my head most of the time with your commanding knowledge of old iron (especially the carburetors) yours is one of my most favorite channels. Your sense and appreciation of history is remarkable for a young man. Keep these videos coming - they are informative and especially entertaining.

Iv always been a little on the sentimental and eccentric side, that’s for sure.
It’s less about the car in its physicality, more so about the reliving of times gone by for me

@@ThunderHead289 everything I saw on your channel does not seem eccentric to me and that vid is no exception. Those Galaxies (63/64/65) were racing everywhere back then including here in Europe - they were what Ford used to shut down Jaguar in the British Touring Car championship. Have a friend who was at Brands Hatch race circuit with his dad way back in 64 and he never forgot that race. The Fords had some issues during qualifying, so started low on the field and were laughed at by the regular crowd. Then the flag dropped and within 3 laps they were leading the race and won by a mile (with respect to the gent with in the vid you uploaded, they CAN go around corners with the right bits). There was stunned silence in the crowd for a while lol. I wanted a Galaxie too but realized it is too big for our roads so got a 64 Comet from Oregon, a car which also sat for long so now I have to go through everything. Am in the middle of a box change too but decided to go for McLeod's Muscle Car 5sp which means I can retain the 5 bolt 289 and don't need to cut the transmission tunnel, but that's no consideration with your car I suppose. Keep the vids coming.

Love watching your videos Luke. You remind me of myself when I was your age. I always liked the older cars and wished I could have lived back in the simpler times (and I'm 62!) The '64 XL seemed old back when I was 25, an 18 year old car at the time. I had one but it was equipped with the small 195 hp 289 2 barrel, standard on the XL. Being a south Florida car it was ordered without the heater/defroster option and had a delete plate where the controls should have been. It did however have a Ford dealer installed under the dash A/C unit and the non-integral power steering which is notorious for the control valve leaking. I worked at Disney World at the time and the oil light came on one night driving home. I ended up rebuilding the engine in the carport of the duplex I lived in. I was quite proud of myself when I was finished. It actually ran and didn't burn oil. That was quite a feat as I had no machine work done (didn't know any better), just put all new parts in it and cleaned the engine as best I could with my limited means.
Anyway, your videos are entertaining as well as informative. Keep them coming.

Luke, you say it's not the best-looking car out there, but I disagree. Stacked headlights, 2 doors, and best of all, a fantastic lever topped off with a knob that come up from the trans tunnel. Oh HELL YES. I'll admit to being a Mopar man at heart, but that Galaxie would certainly find a very loving home here with me in Austin.

I've owned a couple 63 galaxies, drove one all over the country on a road trip in my 20s. I have very distinct memories of driving hours and hours just listening to the hum of that 352 motor, staring down that hood, feeling like I was in a Mad Max movie. I remember pulling into Tucson coming from Salt Lake and the carburetor caught on fire. There was a college party happening and they all came running out putting the fire out with their beers. Great memories.

We've had a 64 galaxie 500 XL sitting in our garage for 20 going on 21 years. Been one of those projects where something always got in the way of working on it. Absolutely zero rust, nice body. We've redone the interior, it looks like brand new and has the new car smell. Getting ready to drop in the 445 FE and C6 with gearvendors hopefully next week that my dad and I built. That car was the single handed most worn out car I've ever seen. If it had a moving or sliding part, it was worn out. The rear windows had been used so much they'd fall out of their tracks if you tried to roll them up. The interiors on those cars are a nightmare to do. Headliner and all the trim around the rear window and edges of the headliner. Never want to do another one of those interiors lol.
Just as an example to how much use the car got. It came with 2 NON ORIGINAL ignition keys, both worn the hell out down to nothing. Who knows what the originals looked like lol.

The prior owner was an old man named Harold, and thus, the car was named Harold. 300,000 hard Vermont miles later, she drove it to a scrapyard in 1986 and walked away with $53. She still regrets doing so-- not a good down payment on the slow and uncomfortable Volvo 240 she bought to replace it. :)

I have a '68 Thunderbird with the 429 TJ (Thunder Jet), and it isn't a catalog car either. On top of very few parts being available for it at part stores. Was a bit troublesome to get pads for my disc brakes for it.
Runs great though, and I definitely like the jet intake styled front nose where most I guess don't like it.
As an added bonus to nothing being reproduced, I got lucky some people had spare manifolds to replace my cracked passenger side exhaust manifold. Otherwise the next option was FPA headers for 780-1100$ with a 6 week wait approximately. I may go with them when I end up rebuilding the 429 with Kaase Boss 9 heads, but right now for daily driving, that's too long of a wait after my temp fix of jb weld I did in December/January began cracking back through recently.

You might want to check the VIN on your '65 Ford. The roofline and B pillar look like a Custom 500; the '65 Galaxie 500 two-door has a different angle on the rear window. The third and fourth digits (2-door cars) will 66 for a Galaxie 500, 51 for a Custom 500, 53 for a Custom, 68 for a Galaxie 500 XL, and 67 for a Galaxie LTD. The LTD became separated from the Galaxie 500 in later years.

It’s hard to recommend where to start without actually being there. I’d verify the cap and rotor electrodes are clean and that you actually have correct timing with a timing light.
Have you gone through the carb at all? I mean this could be as simple as a needle and seat hanging open, a ton of things, just gotta know what symptoms correlate with what things 👍

I much prefer the looks of the 65 Galaxy to the 64. I also like the Mopar clone of it and the Pontiacs of the era.
Detroit did not pay attention to handling for ages!
Some businesses.made a living by making everything handle better. In the end they were selling (anti-)swaybars, springs and shocks for RVs! There are some of those companies still around. You can definitely get your 64-72 GTO/Chevelle to handle well. I expect you can do the same for your 65 Galaxy.
That allows for bigger wheels and tires, but to go farther, you need to stiffen up those chassis that bend and twist like, at best, an uncooked noodle!

IN 1980,to try for a 8_9second quarter mile drag car, I took a 390V8 & C4 transmission from a wrecked 1968 GALAXIE, and fitted into a Datsun Bluebird, 1970 model, for awesome Power to Weight RATIO,with 1HP to 2KG,,with 13" ×400mm drag slicks hanging off the original GALAXIE 9" Rear axle, proved to be a unbreakable combination?

I have a 68 4 door hardtop with a 302 and a c4. Bought a c6 and a 460 to throw in, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I rebuilt the 302 a short while ago and she runs so nice I'd feel bad butchering the thing by trying to cram the big block in it. I feel like its in too good of shape to take away from the originality of the car

My uncle bought a 65 Galaxy brand new...red with black interior...289 auto.. drove it into the early 80s...I found the original sales brochure that he framed when I was helping clean out his house ( he died a few years ago)...I put it aside for safe keeping and my mother threw it out.. pissed me off royal.

Its held every year towards the end of april in Beaver springs, Pennsylvania. Its an all Ford fe powered vehicle show. No i think he just goes there as a spectator. I tried to convince him to bring it. Maybe one day he will. Hopefully he will sometime. The dragstrip is in the middle of nowhere behind someones house. So the next one will be coming up soon unless its canceled because of the virus.
