Two things in the book when he says this he is talking about the worm, but I also think it makes sense with gurney because it's a call back to how paul tells gurney I could recognize you by your footsteps
They mentioned that Jessica was scary in this film but they didn’t mention someone who I found even more frightening: her unborn, fully conscious and aware daughter Alia. After Jessica drank the blue water, she mentions how she’s in constant communication with Alia. That scene where she’s pacing and telepathically scheming with Alia on how they are going to pull this Messiah scam on the Fremen off is chilling when she was like “we’ll make them fear us.” Jessica said to Paul “your sister believes in you and to become the Kwisatz Haderach by drinking the water as well.” Alia even says to Paul he was blinded by love and that he needed to save his hand for a more strategic marriage! Then there’s the scene with the baby sand worm and Jessica says “my daughter wants to know how it’s done” completely unfazed how crazy that sounds.
My favorite scene was when Paul walks into the center of all the fundamentalists. They tell him if he wishes to speak, he needs to replace the leader. Stilgar offers to die for the cause. Paul refuses and proceeds to tell them that noone can stand up to him. The whole place gets up and takes out their weapons in a small moment of doubt like "fuck, who does this guy think he is?" and Paul proceeds to convince them all that he IS their messiah. Saw the movie twice and both times I noticed my hands were sweating during this part. Such a powerful and chilling scene.
Can't lie, my heart swelled in that scene. It was pure magic. That was a master class in winning over the congregation. Timothée killed it because he truly was a different character and commanded the room. That was a run off the damn cliff speech. Can't wait for Dune 3 and I hope it is a 2 part film.
In this scene, he appealed to EVERYONE (North, South…) and Gurney’s heart filled with pride for his fallen (betrayed) Duke Leto and House Atreides 💔 putting his family’s ducal ring back on…Gurney Halleck man
I loved that part with Paul saying he found his way, but the first movie still tears me apart when his father tells he was all he had to be, his son! I lose it EVERY time!😢
Chani is NOT the side chick in the book, Irulan is. Paul clearly defines their relationship immediately. 😂 He makes it crystal clear that Irulan is just an ornament.
I'm guessing DV makes another movie before making Dune: Part 3. So maybe that won't arrive until 2028. But I agree with the idea that having Timothee, Zendaya and Florence age a little bit naturally and grow as actors too will only benefit the final film of the trilogy.
Same here I did too. It was on here in Australia in guessing Ur saw it here in Australia too I saw it Wednesday February 28 got to see both movies in the cinemas as a double billing. Was awesome. 5 a half hour film experience with a 10 minute intermission was awesome.

So the Chani thing at the end was the one thing that really bothered me and it was because they took that character in a different direction overall so I understand it in the scope of the movie but prefer the book's way better. Because in the book she ISN'T the side chick, when Paul says he's going to marry the Emperor's daughter he straight up tells her you will never see me in your bed chambers though because my heart belongs to another. He makes it VERY clear it is PURELY a political marriage and she will get none of the perks of being married to him that she is only a figurehead. I believe he discussed it with Chani beforehand as well. But the take they made in the movie where she rejects him for becoming the Kwisatz Haderach and abandons him even though it was clear the ENTIRE time he wanted 0 part of it... he literally did it because he realized it was that or let the Harkonnens win because they were willing to just take a scorched Earth approach. He literally made that decision for her people to be free, it's just not the way SHE wanted it to happen so she abandon him because to her if they aren't freed by Fremen then they're still enslaved. And I get they're shackled to the religious ideals still... but at the time the choices were abandon the north and live only in the south because Feyd Rautha would openly waste anywhere that he found the Fremen to be at, or Paul had to become what he didn't want to and become a religious icon... and in one of his visions where he became the icon he sees Arrakis with green pastures and oceans of water. Now as I say all of that I still think this is a 10/10 movie. Almost all the changes they made to the book worked for me and I saw how they either made it a better MOVIE adaptation or are setting up for a better sequel because I wasn't a fan of the Messiah book (I just started re-reading Dune and will probably move onto Messiah afterwards). But the one thing with Chani seemed to make me love it less than a lot of what other people are raving about it.
FYI, Dune Prophecy is the Bene Gesserit series. I believe it takes place around 10,000 years before the movie, in the early days of the order and the Corrino imperium.
You guys think Paul is bad, but he isn't. He's prescient: he knows the future. I think the film fails to show that in a more clear way. He knows what he is doing, and he has the intention to find the right way through it. (He says so, after drinking the water of life, in the film, but it isn't enough to make the audience get it. Specially because in the books, the narrative is the internal dialogues of the characters most of the time, but the film doesn't go this rout, because it makes no sense. The 1984 movie did a bit of that, but it doesn't work so well...)

You are literally 0.5 percent of people who understanding this more then the few who understand its cautionary tale WHICH IS THE INTENT but that messaging or intention is disrupted by the idea of prescience. Frank Herbert wanted to do this but his writing didnt set it up that way also his thesis while practical and a necessary caution on messianic figures he makes it sound absolute and i disagree with that also he was blinded by his own influences
How? Give me the proof. He can see futures that are certain so its a choice of going with the jihad causing deaths of billions but humanity survives or he does nothing which is what people suggest he should have done but then jihad still happens and humanity is gone. Which is actually worse bacause you can criticize him for abdication of moral responsbility. Logically Paul is not bad at all. He's victimized by bad choices. @@pastelle_music

Lucas isn’t the only filmmaker that was inspired and borrowed from Dune…every sci-fi movie since the novels came out in the 70s has taken from the lore.
I saw Lynch's theatrical version in the theater, then i was fortunate to see the longer version on tv. From the intro on it was a different film from the theatrical version. If you get a chance see if you can get the extended lynch version you will be able to tell as the extended versions intro is built on a series of illustrations. I admit it, I really enjoyed this extended version. It's long though the one they played on late night tv was close to 5 hours long. Again, can't hurt to try to find this version

I agree with DJ, i think the pacing was the only negative of the film. The first act went too long, and while i wasn't bored or sick of being on Arrakis for so long i felt it was overally indulgent at the expense of a rushed third act.
I love Dune. every iteration brings something to the table. One Dune property that doesn’t get talked about enough is the 2000s sci-fi miniseries , it’s amazing I love how it went through Dune and children of dune. Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.
One of the best cinematic experiences I have had since Avengers Endgame. I can’t wait to see it again in IMAX. I was completely locked in on every scene. A science fiction masterpiece. Bring us Dune Messiah please!!
Jack Sparrow being a supportive character makes sense. That was his role in the first movie. The main characters are Elizabeth and Will. Jack was just the standout character. I think he works best as a mysterious side character rather than the main lead.
So where I Live in Australia they released it a day early as a double feature. So I watched Dune part 1 then Dune part 2 and it was a great 6 hours. I really enjoyed it.
In the DUNE movie when they introduce the Barron Harkonen, it is a reference to Apocalypse Now. The cinematographer of Apocalypse Now also did the cinematography on the DUNE SyFy mini series!!!! (*cue The More You Know)
My mistake on Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire release date since it's on the site where i follow dates for upcoming movies and tv series like Shogun. I don't know why it says April 12th if it's on March 29. But the rest of release dates are accurate.
I think youre going to have alot of people like me who didnt see the first one due to several factors but one big reason is "theyre doing this again?"maybe i check it but no big priority , but with the reviews and word of mouth on the latest being positive to stellar, back track and watch the first and are primed to see this one now. I say this movie will have some staying power with a not overwhelming but very steady flow in the theaters
The pacing is exactly what it needs to be. The worlds and cultures need some development. Action is good but we have to understand all the motives and the backgrounds that convince us these characters belong in the middle of this action.
I love Rogue One, but as cinema it's common. It's lovely. But Rogue one is your pretty girlfriend, whereas Dune p2 is a stunning supermodel. Rogue One is a great action figure, the best quality one, whereas Dune p2 is a Rodin. Also, it's fresh. Star Wars in 1977 was probably that different and crazy new too. They say it was. (My dad used to say it was.)
Dune 2 is the greatest movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Better than Return of the Jedi, better than The Return of the King. Nothing comes close. If it doesn’t win more than 11 Oscars, I’ll be disappointed. Perfection.

Agree its a shame GvK is running same month. Dune is killing it in premium theaters, IMAX and Dolby, and GvK is going to cut the legs off unnecessarily.
That changes when he drinks the water of life. The prescience in him maximizes that gives certainty of whats to come. Also there's never an instance where he says he's being manipulative they are a tool yes but its more like 2 bird one stone the stone being fremen the 2 birds being revenge for himself and savior for freemen.

He sees it because his ppl have future sight and he’s an anomaly which makes him stronger. He certainly realizes after drinking three life water that he’ll have to exploit their belief in him if he wants to succeed and lead to a future he’d prefer.
Couple things here: The lineage passes on the memories and feelings of his past. The power of future sight thats separate thing. Hence having the power of prescience its come through genetically which is the whole point of what the Bene Geserit do. If hes prescient he can see future out comeos and the water of lie basically super maxes it. Second there is no evidence whatsoever that he decides im gonna use the relgious fanatasticm for selfish gain. It is at the very least 2 birds one stone gain revent and be the savior. However its been clearly stated that over throwing the harkonens or if he chooses not do there was going to be jihad anyway so by that silver lining or the narrow way as paul put it gave him the path of least destructiono by sheer burden of knowledge gets from his future sight not the the lineage memories. @@iansmart4158
I think Sam Raimi is a legendary director. He is up there with Denis and Tarantino for his impact on horror and superhero movies. I also think David Fincher is a legendary director as well for obvious reasons. What's in the box ?!
Kristian, I am right there with you on the Oscar's, just need results but the rest is fake exhausting nonsense. Also, I believe reviews are king, reactions are a required taste. I love hearing what people think but I don't need to be in the room as they watch. Dune 2 was Incredible!!
Dune 2 was amazing cinematically, and the story was great for the most part, but some parts of the ending did fall a bit flat for me. Like the fact that he’s a Harkonen is pretty much meaningless to the ending, and also he sacrifices his love for Chani hoping that marrying the Emperors daughter would give him legitimacy but all of the houses deny him anyway, so he threw Chani aside for nothing, seemingly. Wasn’t a fan of those two things, but the rest was great
Rocha keeps playing this same game. When Mahoes won his third ring, he said, “We have to have that discussion about Mahomes being better than Brady.” And now he’s doing it with Zimmer and Williams. He’s done it other times too.
In the book, Chani is 100% on board with Paul being the Messiah pretty early on, so that's a big change. The book ends with Jessica telling Chani that it's ok for him to marry Princess Irulan, because history will remember the concubines as the true wives of Duke Leto and Paul. Apparently this wasnt girl power enough so they changed it, which I don't like. But still an incredible film. Blows anything Star Wars has made in several decades. A lot of people just being introduced to Dune with these new movies probably think, "Man a lot of this stuff looks familiar, like Star Wars," or whatever else. The book was published in 1965, so it really is the other way around. Dune inspired most of the sci fi we know today, and has been ripped off by countless different things. *Cough* Warhammer 40k *cough*
Bit extreme BUT, i wish they showed more scenes of Fremen sacrificing themselves for the cause. I just didnt fully buy into their cause. If at least 1 or 2 people died for paul like suicide bomber style, it would make his rise to power much more fullfilling and meanful because now you know this dude HAS to make it for the sake of those who have already died for him.
Just seen DUNE 2 again 5 days after it opened here in New Zealand cinemas. the cinema i seen it in is just a normal cinema, no atmos surround sound just Dolby. No Large screen locally. But people are coming to see this amazing movie. While there are other movie running like Bob Marley One love, Demon slayers.
If you pronounce Harkonnen with an ancient Latin (you know, the language of the ancient Romans) accent, it's Harkónnen, and we are used to that because of the 1984 movie. If you pronounce it with an ancient Greek accent, you might have a possible Hárkonnen. I don't know where Villeneuve took this pronunciation from. I don't know how Herbert pronounced it. There are interviews of Frank Herbert. Maybe it's possible to find out.
Wanted to pop back in here with a comment, cause I thought I may have been the commenter that Kristian called out for saying that Paul wasn’t taking a “dark side” turn. If so, that was misconstrued. It is of course a super dark course of action that Paul takes. What the film doesn’t do a great job of expressing is that once he takes the water of life, Paul can see all other possible outcomes of the conflict more clearly. Think Dr. Strange in endgame. What he comes to realize is as bad as this path he walks is, it’s actually the LEAST bad of all outcomes. He becomes trapped by fate, and by his own foresight (getting around his foresight is a major plot point in the next book. Thats not a spoiler.) But yeah, I just think the film DID have a pacing problem but mostly in that final act. There are complexities to that part of the story that the movie speedruns through, and I don’t fault filmgoers for getting a “he drank the worm juice and turned evil” interpretation because the film doesn’t spend time explaining more to the audience how his perception is changed. The film there really just shifts to Chani’s POV and that Paul is “lost”. This is a significant departure from the books. I don’t hate that it ups the drama for that final moment, but in the books his marriage to Irulan is entirely political. He refuses to procreate with her and Chani is his partner and concubine just as Jessica was to Duke Leto. I’d also recommend giving the 84 version another go. While these films do a better job making Dune into a more mainstream epic…the books really are quite strange, and Lynch was able to lean into that in very evocative ways, using an omniscient POV and hearing characters thoughts with bits of text straight from the book. There are aspects to the Lynch film that are more faithful (the importance of the Spacing Guild, the portrayal of Alia as a terrifying murder baby). This comment isn’t meant to yuck your yum, I thought both of these were pretty great, but just a reminder to keep in mind that not all of us book readers complaints are about superficial nitpicks…sometimes it is to the detriment of the film if the author’s original intent gets glossed over or oversimplified. Anyways, I enjoy your shows and hope this is an example of a way to have thoughtful discourse even when there’s quibbles and disagreements. Would totally recommend reading the books, but be prepared because the further they go the more it will seem to you that Lynch’s vision wasn’t too far off the mark in terms of how bizarre and horrific this universe is.
You guys mentioned how Dennis changed up Zendaya's role compared to the book, it seems like he could be making her the hero of the 3rd movie. Also wouldnt be suprised if shes pregnant cause she has a kid of pauls during the first Dune book. It just doesnt seem like Paul will be the hero of the 3rd movie. Could be a combo of zendaya, pauls kid/s, or maybe his sister
It really bothers me, how Hollywood, Studios and most people treated Johnny Depp. Innocent until proven guilty seems to be a thing of the past, these days. If someone chooses to ruin someone’s life, no one questions it, they just immediately believe anything that person says. It’s ridiculous. Why are so many people so gullible? Everyone who has ever worked with Johnny Depp has never said a bad word about him, ever. Now that he’s been proven innocent, I hope that his career picks up again, but this has shaken his faith in the industry. It’s really sad to see.
If we get dune messiah and children of dune. I hope they don't break it into 2 movies each. I have no problems with this movie being 2 parts, but it was a long wait between movies
Chani story is movie exclusive, don't think she was as opposed in book. Also if they are making Messiah into movie, pretty sure it will play out different than the end indicated with her walking out. he told her twice that until his last breath he loves her, so prepare yourself for a loveless marriage with the Corino lady who I forgot the name of at the moment. Irulia? whatever, book 2 (movie 3) will shed light on relationships and their functions for Paul.
Messiah is, I think, 12 years later. Children of Dune is, therefore, around 9, 10 years after Messiah, but Denis V. will close his participation at Messiah. (For now. Who knows he pulls a Peter Jackson, because who would touch this after him?) God-Emperor of Dune is the one that is (if I'm not mistaken) 3000 (yes, 3 thousand) years in the future.
Dune 2 Is a great movie; I might see it again, subtitles are difficult, with that said Dune 2 deserves all the money and to be seen on the largest screen possible. Believe the hype however at the same time it has been a bit overhyped, though it is really good; my only flaw isn't really flaw because it kind of has to be part of Dune and everything else is great
Hey, I saw Dune 2 this past weekend on Saturday afternoon at the Imax theater. Enjoyed it with my sistahs , I had seen Dune part one on HBO when it first came out and found it interesting. I like the storytelling, the imagination and I thought it was intriguing. I've never read any of the books. I've never seen any of the old movies. in fact, I had no desire to see the one back in the 70s or 80s. However This new movie was so much fun to watch. And I think that all the actors did a good job except for girl that played Princess but my favorite I think. Had to be Rebecca Ferguson. It was good but I will not be watching it again until it streams. I don't have the money in my budget. And I don't have the time to sit for 3 hours in the movie theater again.
39:46 it is TOO BAD he did not shoot both "Dunes" as a single movie because it would have saved SO MUCH money (creating a more easily profitable offering).
I thought Dune Part Two was pretty good. However, I am not quite sure if it is a sci-fi "masterpiece". I thought the that Paul/Chani relationship wasn't that strong. I also thought Austin Butler's character wasn't in the movie enough which didn't create the menace or threat that I expected. I thought the villains were rather one-dimensional. It could have used more development. I still don't know why House H hates the Atreides family aside from spice competition. Lots of great things tho and I love Denis's work in general.
Rocha says some nutty stuff. Like Greta Gerwig being "legendary" lol. I'm glad Kristian calls him out on it. Respectfully, Kathryn Bigelow is legendary not Gerwig lol, at least yet.
I didn't enjoy the first one that much (7½/10) but I thought this was better (8½/10) but some glaring flaws that definitely didn't make it a "masterpiece". But I got to say the Monty Python's "Life Of Brian" moment with Stilgar... Monty Python's official TH-cam channel has the clip and ALL the recent comments are about Dune 2. :D
Saw Dune part 2 Three timi and I loved it. I still prefer the mini series myself. What do you think about the Heel Rock I am loving it. I'm not a big WWE fan But I love the Rock . Having the Rock come back and having Sting's last match. It is great being a wrestling fan( except for the Vince stuff)
What a bummer, I haven't had a chance to watch it yet and in my city, dune 2 didn’t perform enough to pass 1 week on theatres. It’s already been replaced by kung fu panda 4 today

the best part about Kristian is how well he works with all of his guests. All the shows are great and he has phenomenal chemistry with which ever guests he has on...Rocha, Coy, Reilly, Brett, Winston, ROXY etc. no matter who is on he brings out the best in everybody and is totally engaging. great all around host
I LOVED the first Dune and was a mixed bag watching Dune Part 2. I wanted to love it so much but something missed that I am still trying to process. I totally agree with the pacing issue. If I can make an analogy, Dune 1 was like going down a flowing river on a canoe. Dune Part 2 felt like I was on a stop and start city bus ride. I truly feel this movie should have been broken into two parts. Especially to flesh out the Chani/Paul relationship and the frustration of the Harkonens/Emperor. The ending throne room scene would have carried so much more weight if his relationship with Chani didn't feel like a 2 week fling.
@@TheKristianHarloff I truly am glad to see the praise and love this film deserves. Objectively it's an amazing movie that I'll have to watch a few times. More a "me" thing than a critique on the movie. Maybe my expectations were too high?? and I deep dived into the world of Dune after 2021 film. It was funny mentioning your wife watching Dune 1. My wife "tagged" along because she didn't want me going by myself to theatre and I could tell she wasn't a fan(but that was to be expected). But I asked her last night how long she thought this movie timeline played out, and she answered 1 month. And for me it felt like it it transpired over two weeks from the end of Dune Part 1. That would be my biggest critique and would actually like to see more world of Dune....of that makes any sense? Either, love the passion and great to see a movie of this level come out. I think it can be a pivotal time in the renaissance of theatre experience.

There's no Dune part 3. Dune the book is parts 1 and 2. The next film will be film 3, but it is another book: Dune - Messiah. Film 1 : Dune (book 1), part 1 Film 2 : Dune (book 1), part 2 Film 3 : Dune - Messiah (book 2)

Chani is NOT the side chick in the book, Irulan is. Paul clearly defines their relationship immediately. 😂 He makes it crystal clear that Irulan is just an ornament.
I'm guessing DV makes another movie before making Dune: Part 3. So maybe that won't arrive until 2028. But I agree with the idea that having Timothee, Zendaya and Florence age a little bit naturally and grow as actors too will only benefit the final film of the trilogy.

So the Chani thing at the end was the one thing that really bothered me and it was because they took that character in a different direction overall so I understand it in the scope of the movie but prefer the book's way better. Because in the book she ISN'T the side chick, when Paul says he's going to marry the Emperor's daughter he straight up tells her you will never see me in your bed chambers though because my heart belongs to another. He makes it VERY clear it is PURELY a political marriage and she will get none of the perks of being married to him that she is only a figurehead. I believe he discussed it with Chani beforehand as well. But the take they made in the movie where she rejects him for becoming the Kwisatz Haderach and abandons him even though it was clear the ENTIRE time he wanted 0 part of it... he literally did it because he realized it was that or let the Harkonnens win because they were willing to just take a scorched Earth approach. He literally made that decision for her people to be free, it's just not the way SHE wanted it to happen so she abandon him because to her if they aren't freed by Fremen then they're still enslaved. And I get they're shackled to the religious ideals still... but at the time the choices were abandon the north and live only in the south because Feyd Rautha would openly waste anywhere that he found the Fremen to be at, or Paul had to become what he didn't want to and become a religious icon... and in one of his visions where he became the icon he sees Arrakis with green pastures and oceans of water.
Now as I say all of that I still think this is a 10/10 movie. Almost all the changes they made to the book worked for me and I saw how they either made it a better MOVIE adaptation or are setting up for a better sequel because I wasn't a fan of the Messiah book (I just started re-reading Dune and will probably move onto Messiah afterwards). But the one thing with Chani seemed to make me love it less than a lot of what other people are raving about it.
FYI, Dune Prophecy is the Bene Gesserit series. I believe it takes place around 10,000 years before the movie, in the early days of the order and the Corrino imperium.

You guys think Paul is bad, but he isn't. He's prescient: he knows the future. I think the film fails to show that in a more clear way. He knows what he is doing, and he has the intention to find the right way through it. (He says so, after drinking the water of life, in the film, but it isn't enough to make the audience get it. Specially because in the books, the narrative is the internal dialogues of the characters most of the time, but the film doesn't go this rout, because it makes no sense. The 1984 movie did a bit of that, but it doesn't work so well...)

I thought the movie didn't fail this in anyway it's done perfectly. The depth to how evil will seduce you is done perfectly. It's being human.

He can see futures that are certain so its a choice of going with the jihad causing deaths of billions but humanity survives or he does nothing which is what people suggest he should have done but then jihad still happens and humanity is gone. I saw Lynch's theatrical version in the theater, then i was fortunate to see the longer version on tv. From the intro on it was a different film from the theatrical version. If you get a chance see if you can get the extended lynch version you will be able to tell as the extended versions intro is built on a series of illustrations. I admit it, I really enjoyed this extended version. It's long though the one they played on late night tv was close to 5 hours long. Again, can't hurt to try to find this version

I agree with DJ, i think the pacing was the only negative of the film. The first act went too long, and while i wasn't bored or sick of being on Arrakis for so long i felt it was overally indulgent at the expense of a rushed third act.

I love Dune. every iteration brings something to the table. One Dune property that doesn’t get talked about enough is the 2000s sci-fi miniseries , it’s amazing I love how it went through Dune and children of dune. Definitely worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.
One of the best cinematic experiences I have had since Avengers Endgame. I can’t wait to see it again in IMAX. I was completely locked in on every scene. A science fiction masterpiece. Bring us Dune Messiah please!!
Both films parts, 1 and 2, begin with the 2 women in Paul’s future narrating the story.
Jack Sparrow being a supportive character makes sense. That was his role in the first movie. The main characters are Elizabeth and Will. Jack was just the standout character. I think he works best as a mysterious side character rather than the main lead.
So where I Live in Australia they released it a day early as a double feature. So I watched Dune part 1 then Dune part 2 and it was a great 6 hours. I really enjoyed it.
What a film, just finished watching it and it still hasn’t sunk in. Definitely a rewatch is in the works😢

In the DUNE movie when they introduce the Barron Harkonen, it is a reference to Apocalypse Now. The cinematographer of Apocalypse Now also did the cinematography on the DUNE SyFy mini series!!!! (*cue The More You Know)

I think youre going to have alot of people like me who didnt see the first one due to several factors but one big reason is "theyre doing this again?"maybe i check it but no big priority , but with the reviews and word of mouth on the latest being positive to stellar, back track and watch the first and are primed to see this one now. I say this movie will have some staying power with a not overwhelming but very steady flow in the theaters
The pacing is exactly what it needs to be. The worlds and cultures need some development. Action is good but we have to understand all the motives and the backgrounds that convince us these characters belong in the middle of this action.
I love Rogue One, but as cinema it's common. It's lovely. But Rogue one is your pretty girlfriend, whereas Dune p2 is a stunning supermodel. Rogue One is a great action figure, the best quality one, whereas Dune p2 is a Rodin.
Also, it's fresh. Star Wars in 1977 was probably that different and crazy new too. They say it was. (My dad used to say it was.)
Dune 2 is the greatest movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Better than Return of the Jedi, better than The Return of the King. Nothing comes close. If it doesn’t win more than 11 Oscars, I’ll be disappointed. Perfection.

Paul does not believe in the prophecy. He’s just using it to take advantage of the Fremen ppl to do his bidding and avenge his father.
That changes when he drinks the water of life. The prescience in him maximizes that gives certainty of whats to come. Also there's never an instance where he says he's being manipulative they are a tool yes but its more like 2 bird one stone the stone being fremen the 2 birds being revenge for himself and savior for freemen.

He certainly realizes after drinking three life water that he’ll have to exploit their belief in him if he wants to succeed and lead to a future he’d prefer.
Couple things here:
The lineage passes on the memories and feelings of his past. The power of future sight thats separate thing. Hence having the power of prescience its come through genetically which is the whole point of what the Bene Geserit do. If hes prescient he can see future out comeos and the water of lie basically super maxes it.
Second there is no evidence whatsoever that he decides im gonna use the relgious fanatasticm for selfish gain. It is at the very least 2 birds one stone gain revent and be the savior. However its been clearly stated that over throwing the harkonens or if he chooses not do there was going to be jihad anyway so by that silver lining or the narrow way as paul put it gave him the path of least destructiono by sheer burden of knowledge gets from his future sight not the the lineage memories. @@iansmart4158

Dune 2 was Incredible!!
Dune 2 was amazing cinematically, and the story was great for the most part, but some parts of the ending did fall a bit flat for me. Like the fact that he’s a Harkonen is pretty much meaningless to the ending, and also he sacrifices his love for Chani hoping that marrying the Emperors daughter would give him legitimacy but all of the houses deny him anyway, so he threw Chani aside for nothing, seemingly. Wasn’t a fan of those two things, but the rest was great
Rocha keeps playing this same game. When Mahoes won his third ring, he said, “We have to have that discussion about Mahomes being better than Brady.” And now he’s doing it with Zimmer and Williams. He’s done it other times too.

In the book, Chani is 100% on board with Paul being the Messiah pretty early on, so that's a big change. The book ends with Jessica telling Chani that it's ok for him to marry Princess Irulan, because history will remember the concubines as the true wives of Duke Leto and Paul. Apparently this wasnt girl power enough so they changed it, which I don't like. But still an incredible film. Blows anything Star Wars has made in several decades.
A lot of people just being introduced to Dune with these new movies probably think, "Man a lot of this stuff looks familiar, like Star Wars," or whatever else. The book was published in 1965, so it really is the other way around. Dune inspired most of the sci fi we know today, and has been ripped off by countless different things. *Cough* Warhammer 40k *cough*
Bit extreme BUT, i wish they showed more scenes of Fremen sacrificing themselves for the cause. I just didnt fully buy into their cause. If at least 1 or 2 people died for paul like suicide bomber style, it would make his rise to power much more fullfilling and meanful because now you know this dude HAS to make it for the sake of those who have already died for him.
Just seen DUNE 2 again 5 days after it opened here in New Zealand cinemas. the cinema i seen it in is just a normal cinema, no atmos surround sound just Dolby. No Large screen locally. But people are coming to see this amazing movie. While there are other movie running like Bob Marley One love, Demon slayers.

If you pronounce Harkonnen with an ancient Latin (you know, the language of the ancient Romans) accent, it's Harkónnen, and we are used to that because of the 1984 movie. If you pronounce it with an ancient Greek accent, you might have a possible Hárkonnen. I don't know where Villeneuve took this pronunciation from. I don't know how Herbert pronounced it. There are interviews of Frank Herbert. Maybe it's possible to find out.
Wanted to pop back in here with a comment, cause I thought I may have been the commenter that Kristian called out for saying that Paul wasn’t taking a “dark side” turn. If so, that was misconstrued. It is of course a super dark course of action that Paul takes. What the film doesn’t do a great job of expressing is that once he takes the water of life, Paul can see all other possible outcomes of the conflict more clearly. Think Dr. Strange in endgame. What he comes to realize is as bad as this path he walks is, it’s actually the LEAST bad of all outcomes. He becomes trapped by fate, and by his own foresight (getting around his foresight is a major plot point in the next book. Thats not a spoiler.) But yeah, I just think the film DID have a pacing problem but mostly in that final act. There are complexities to that part of the story that the movie speedruns through, and I don’t fault filmgoers for getting a “he drank the worm juice and turned evil” interpretation because the film doesn’t spend time explaining more to the audience how his perception is changed. The film there really just shifts to Chani’s POV and that Paul is “lost”. This is a significant departure from the books. I don’t hate that it ups the drama for that final moment, but in the books his marriage to Irulan is entirely political. He refuses to procreate with her and Chani is his partner and concubine just as Jessica was to Duke Leto. I’d also recommend giving the 84 version another go. While these films do a better job making Dune into a more mainstream epic…the books really are quite strange, and Lynch was able to lean into that in very evocative ways, using an omniscient POV and hearing characters thoughts with bits of text straight from the book. There are aspects to the Lynch film that are more faithful (the importance of the Spacing Guild, the portrayal of Alia as a terrifying murder baby). This comment isn’t meant to yuck your yum, I thought both of these were pretty great, but just a reminder to keep in mind that not all of us book readers complaints are about superficial nitpicks…sometimes it is to the detriment of the film if the author’s original intent gets glossed over or oversimplified. Anyways, I enjoy your shows and hope this is an example of a way to have thoughtful discourse even when there’s quibbles and disagreements. Would totally recommend reading the books, but be prepared because the further they go the more it will seem to you that Lynch’s vision wasn’t too far off the mark in terms of how bizarre and horrific this universe is.

It really bothers me, how Hollywood, Studios and most people treated Johnny Depp. Innocent until proven guilty seems to be a thing of the past, these days. If someone chooses to ruin someone’s life, no one questions it, they just immediately believe anything that person says. It’s ridiculous. Why are so many people so gullible? Everyone who has ever worked with Johnny Depp has never said a bad word about him, ever. Now that he’s been proven innocent, I hope that his career picks up again, but this has shaken his faith in the industry. It’s really sad to see.

Messiah is, I think, 12 years later. Children of Dune is, therefore, around 9, 10 years after Messiah, but Denis V. will close his participation at Messiah. (For now. Who knows he pulls a Peter Jackson, because who would touch this after him?)
God-Emperor of Dune is the one that is (if I'm not mistaken) 3000 (yes, 3 thousand) years in the future.

Dune 2 Is a great movie; I might see it again, subtitles are difficult, with that said Dune 2 deserves all the money and to be seen on the largest screen possible. Believe the hype however at the same time it has been a bit overhyped, though it is really good; my only flaw isn't really flaw because it kind of has to be part of Dune and everything else is great
Hey, I saw Dune 2 this past weekend on Saturday afternoon at the Imax theater. Enjoyed it with my sistahs , I had seen Dune part one on HBO when it first came out and found it interesting. I like the storytelling, the imagination and I thought it was intriguing. I've never read any of the books. I've never seen any of the old movies. in fact, I had no desire to see the one back in the 70s or 80s. However This new movie was so much fun to watch. And I think that all the actors did a good job except for girl that played Princess but my favorite I think. Had to be Rebecca Ferguson. It was good but
I will not be watching it again until it streams. I don't have the money in my budget. And I don't have the time to sit for 3 hours in the movie theater again.
It would be awesome if when they release the 4K disc they release a version that has both edited together so it’s one movie

I thought Dune Part Two was pretty good. However, I am not quite sure if it is a sci-fi "masterpiece". I thought the that Paul/Chani relationship wasn't that strong. I also thought Austin Butler's character wasn't in the movie enough which didn't create the menace or threat that I expected. I thought the villains were rather one-dimensional. It could have used more development. I still don't know why House H hates the Atreides family aside from spice competition. Lots of great things tho and I love Denis's work in general.

Saw Dune part 2 Three timi and I loved it. I still prefer the mini series myself. What do you think about the Heel Rock I am loving it. I'm not a big WWE fan But I love the Rock . Having the Rock come back and having Sting's last match. It is great being a wrestling fan( except for the Vince stuff)

I LOVED the first Dune and was a mixed bag watching Dune Part 2. I wanted to love it so much but something missed that I am still trying to process. I totally agree with the pacing issue. If I can make an analogy, Dune 1 was like going down a flowing river on a canoe. Dune Part 2 felt like I was on a stop and start city bus ride. I truly feel this movie should have been broken into two parts. Especially to flesh out the Chani/Paul relationship and the frustration of the Harkonens/Emperor. The ending throne room scene would have carried so much more weight if his relationship with Chani didn't feel like a 2 week fling.

More a "me" thing than a critique on the movie. Maybe my expectations were too high?? and I deep dived into the world of Dune after 2021 film. It was funny mentioning your wife watching Dune 1. My wife "tagged" along because she didn't want me going by myself to theatre and I could tell she wasn't a fan(but that was to be expected). But I asked her last night how long she thought this movie timeline played out, and she answered 1 month. And for me it felt like it it transpired over two weeks from the end of Dune Part 1. That would be my biggest critique and would actually like to see more world of Dune....of that makes any sense? Either, love the passion and great to see a movie of this level come out. I think it can be a pivotal time in the renaissance of theatre experience.
