  • Euphoria is a thrilling HBO drama with powerful performances and smart storytelling. It's a show that is hard to describe or explain, it's much more interesting to watch. The characters are incredibly rich and complex, and the show is an emotional ride that will give you more empathy for the trauma that people experience and is the gold standard for how to write character-driven story.

it's frustrating that so many euphoria haters AND fans don't seem to understand that Euphoria is not meant to be a literal depiction of what high school/being a teenager was like, but rather what being a teenager FELT like. Levinson has said his main goal is to evoke empathy, which he so expertly does through a character-driven drama. it feels like so much of the euphoria fandom proves Levinson's point that not enough people regard and treat others with empathy.
anyways, I think UK Skins (first generation, season1&2) is the only other show that accomplishes what Euphoria does, and if you watch you can see its influence on Euphoria.

Yeah it’s no teeny bopper, I thought it was very “unrealistic” about high school but VERY “realistic” about life.

Skins (the UK version, not the US version) is another teen drama in which each episode revolves around 1 specific character. it's a bit older (2007) but it's a really great show. characters you start of hating eventually become favourites for alot of people because the character development is amazing.

I would argue that Kat getting stung by a jellyfish isn't the main trauma, it was a trigger for impending trauma driven by fatphobia . If the world was tolerant to people who looked different, if Daniel wasn't as shallow as a toddler play pool. The jellyfish incident and the weight gain that followed would've been a minor inconvenience.

I actually didn't expect myself to like this one. Just like the video maker, I think ooh, this is a overdramatic depiction of my generation, I would never relate to any of this. BUT, I become obsessed with it. I have compassion for almost every character. I free relatable. People (mostly) criticize the show based on the nudity, the triggering issues that are talked about on mainstream media, instead of really watch the show and come to the conclusion. Who needs the show to be real so that you can feel real?

Damn, we really do seem to like all of the same things. This was great! Euphoria is such an exceptional show. It doesn't seem like it gets the amount of attention that it deserves.
I'm gonna cast a vote for Cloud Atlas, The Grand Budapest Hotel, or maybe a season of True Detective for one of your future videos. But go with whatever you're feeling, those are all a little dated so I'd respect you going for something a little more algorithm oriented. Thanks again and great job!

Insightful analysis. However, where did you get that Jules's mom left her cause she was trans? I thought it was cause her mom was an alcoholic. I'm not saying that you're not correct, but are you just assuming it was the cause of her alcoholism or was something specifically said about it? Also, I thought Jules was committed because she was self-harming in a dangerous way, which she did in the hospital, also.

Unfortunately, I don’t think every single character faces consequences for their traumas and not everything that’s show on their backstory is even remembered by the show. Nate had his backstory shown to us but it still doesn’t make any sense that he’s a mastermind manipulator who make flawless evil plans while being a 17 year old. That’s not how real people work.
The worst case of this tho I think is McKay. I think it’s fine that the show establishes him as a guy who’s fully committed to being the best football player out of pure parental pressure, which leads to him leaving Cassie and treating her like shit after she tells him she’s pregnant. What’s not fine is that he eventually becomes a rope victim and the show just forgets that happened completely. And like McKay’s case (although this is the worst case), the show fails to justify many things even with this backstory gimmick.
It works, just not every single time.

Yeah exactly my point. Also Kat being a sex worker doesn't make sense as shit like that happens to most kids. Usually things like neglect, CSA and other forms of abuse, and foster homes are what lead to those actions but then the show couldn't take place in first class California and they couldn't show teenagers partying in mansions but the 14 year old Kat/Cassie apologists aren't ready to hear that
