I don’t think there’s just one answer I try lots of different things and sometimes one works better than another even with the same child it can vary Some kids calm from breathing through their nose Some kids like being squeezed between pillows or a squeeze on their legs or arms Some kids like heavy work like lifting ankle weights or pulling very tough Velcro Some kids like playing with putty or slime I don’t find asking what’s bothering them works because communication is challenging when they are upset if you have to ask try to make it a yes or no question they can answer with a gesture like thumbs up or thumbs down for example don’t require speech when they are already disregulated
