As someone that has been playing Madden since Madden 2000, I may surprise some people here. Madden 17 franchise mode is still my go to ever since my PS2 died. Two things really stand out in this game, player progression and scouting. Player progression because you need to target and develop those 90s overall players over years to get them to their potential. Scouting because it tells you top stats/combine skills so you know how a player might fit into your system (example, I only draft RG with a B or higher run block cause that’s where I like to run the ball). Just my two cents, but Madden 17 is really fun for anyone who likes franchise mode
i played madden 17 player franchise mode for a stupid amount of time until i finally caved and bought madden 20. I vividly remember branden gauden having a voiceline where he breaks the fourth wall and refers to the player as john asking if they are still playing the game. I’ve never seen anyone else talk about this anywhere has those happened to anyone else
Need madden 15 retrospective…want ur thoughts on it, you’re very critical of EA and I agree with you on 97% of things in regards to EA, I think madden 15 was a pretty dope madden, it’s the one I go back to play consistently
I'm a huge modern Madden hater but I love 17s Franchise mode tbh. It had my favorite draft classes of all time, so varied with tons of physical freaks and actually relevant undrafted free agents. Obviously the gameplay was animation based and it still has rubber band AI, but with sliders I could at least get unpredictable games with stats pretty close to the sim stats and that's the most I can ask for at this point.
still the best newest madden you can get. been waiting for this episode for just this comment: this games way better than anything thats come since. last one ill play until they get better. watching your videos ive been prompted to play older ones but still find myself popping in the ps4 disc of '17 to get the closest to modern football gaming and thats hysterically sad considering its almost ten years old now
Madden 17 is my personal darling. I remember I was a teenager, just gotten a next gen console and I was super excited about the game that year. And it was a lot easier on me because I wasn’t too salty over features lost because I guess I didn’t remember them that much (madden 12 is one my all time favs too) but the way that game played was just so fun and I had a ton of fun just playing franchise as my favorite team. I was a casual/semi sim player, who loved building franchise around fictional layers in the draft. And the gameplay was fun. And it aged amazingly especially with how terrible the new engine is. Every madden since 17 has gotten worse and worse and only until this years madden I’ve finally had some fun in madden 25 this year that reminded me of madden 17. However, I still miss madden 17 more especially considering it was a much less buggy experience. Not to mention, madden 17s soundtrack was one of the best in any madden game ever. I still listen to its songs to this day. And every madden soundtrack has declined since then with just rp genre songs from rap artists who are t even that great like jack harlow. Like Who actually listens to jack harlow? And again, another reason for madden 25 I feel old about it is because the soundtrack is actually kind of nice and easily the best since 17. I personally love it. But… madden 25 has too many issues that simply shouldn’t be in the game at this stage.
Far from perfect, but this was the last madden I actually was able to get through multiple seasons of franchise without simulating and actually enjoying playing the game.
The Madden I currently play is 18 which has Frostbite but it isnt fully integrated. The major difference I see is that Frostbite is highly scripted, there are way too many blocked kicks, you can't ever win without the CPU coming back and forcing a close game in the 4th, fumbles are always recovered by the offense even if all 11 defenders are standing on top of the ball, etc. This engine is not for sports.
The whole engine thing is honestly over blown. The same excuse gets made for Bethesda and it's BS. Moving to frostbite had a negative effect on the series, but if EA gave even 1% of a shit they could make it work. They have their MUT money so there's no reason to make it work.
Frostbite is the issue, the frostbite engine was developed for the battlefield series by DICE. Now ea uses the engine outside of it’s intended purpose and i cause issues in all their games, except for the battlefield series. It is also a notoriously hard engine to work with.
@@VulcanLogic anthem was just empty garbage. The engine isn't the problem. It's the lack of incentive for EA to innovate and make a better product because of the lack of competition. 2k has now turned into garbage because of the same reasons as Madden. It has nothing to do with the engine and everything to do with the lack of competition allowing a focus on microtransactions. It's as if EA and Take-Two just decided to allow each to have a sport to dominate.
@@prolific1518 not disagreeing, EA is 100% lazy and refuses to innovate in not just its sports games but in all the genres it makes games for. With that point said, the game engine is still a the problem when it comes to anything other than graphical fidelity and destruction the frostbite engine sucks, you can see this even in the battlefield games, anything that requires proper physics does weird things such as driving which is super floaty and unpredictable and rag dolling bodies that randomly contort like a possessed person when colliding with objects. The issue the engine causes are compounded by the laziness of EA. Hell the fact that it’s been using the same game engine for the past decade shows how lazy they are. They wanted frostbite to be the end all be all game engine so they will continue to willingly ignore its flaws and force it on the consumer
@@Djiony23 imo at the heart of it is EA's unwillingness to innovate their products and that includes the game engine. Rockstar has been using the same game engine for generations now and constantly improving it. Idk of anyone who has complained about it. EA is just lazy and/or simply bottom line focused to the point where it will hurt the company in the long term. When that happens no one knows because people keep spending money on mediocre products. Any competition that requires a dedication of assets it just seems to give up on it (Battlefield and NBA Live come to mind). I think EA is just the most money hungry video game publisher.
BRO! Well done, this is exactly the content gamers and developers need to know about madden. I’m 43, I’ve seen em all. EA is an absolute disaster and leaves a shit stain all over the NFL’s reputation, it’s that bad you can smell it too. I genuinely used to get chills when I heard the war cry when warming up a game of madden back in the day, EA sports, it’s in the game! But now it feels like .. EA sports. It’s in the bin. And the bin is a dumpster fire that’s getting pissed on by ratty skinny cats with skin issues n shit…
IDK what it was about Madden 17, but the game just hit for me at the time. I think I made it like 9 years deep into a single franchise save - and I dont think i've made it even half as far in a single save in the entire frostbite era
Honestly, this is my favorite Madden. I know gameplay and feature wise, the PS2 and Xbox 260 era games were all around better, but for some reason, Madden 17 is just one of those games you love, but just can’t understand why
I played this game, and it felt balanced. Good offensive and good defense. Usually, these new maddens have every new feature. But i guess not to 17, and if i remember correctly, this is the game where Brandon and Charles were first introduced. Then again, I've played. Every Madden game since 97 and the first John Madden football and all the way to 96 soo
I will always love madden 17. It was my first madden i owned and one of the first games i owned on the xbox one when i finally got one on my birthday. Good times man.
This was the last madden game I bought and played. I was so angry with how it turned out and I went back to go return it. Now I wish EA could make Madden at least playable like Madden 17. That's how LOW our expectations are.
i recently played Madden 17 again and it felt so smooth compared to everything after it. There is a fluidity to it as opposed to the current clunk of the later Madden games. The other thing I noticed is that when you simulate the computer playing against each other the computer actually uses common sense. If you simulate in the post-Madden 17 product, players will do things like casually let the clock wind down or NOT go out of bounds when they need to get down the field and score a game winning/tying touchdown.
I remember playing this game a lot when this game came out. I personally would say this is the last okay Madden. It’s not great but can at least enjoy playing it and not feel sad playing it 18-24 are completely different stories.
Madden 17 has a special place for me. First madden, first time learning more about the sport, and overall, gave me a new look at the game. Before i knew so little, now i know alot about the game. Madden 17 let me do some crazy things like a rebuild on a team and just overall, so much better than the new maddens.
I found a way to cheese the run game a bit. Because this was still somewhat physics engine I found that big heavy running backs were would always fall forward and trucks were OP. So, I’d draft full backs and change position to HB and they’d always dominate. I had this 5’11” 250lb fullback get 20tds and over 1500 yards a season, he was a wrecking ball.
Anyone notice how on the newer maddens, at half time teams come out to the middle of the field instead of going to the locker room. It’s pathetic how bad ea is
The Mut Draft/Draft Champion modes were my favorite, so much fun. got to play with some strong cards without having to buy/grind for them. i haven't played Madden in years but I figure that's part of why it started being pushed to the back of the game because of a lack of ability to monetize it like the regular Mut modes like the Ranked league thing lol
i actually just started a franchise in madden 17 like a week ago... i bought this game like 3 years ago for a dollar and finally am starting to mess with it =)
I kind of just realized that Madden developers are workers too. I've been at a job where I was told what to do and voiced my opinion saying "hey that won't work," and the bosses reply is "make it work." The developers know where they fall short at but they're told to make it work on frostbite.
I played alot of madden 18, 15, and 13 but the one thats most nostalgic for me is madden 12 since that was my first one. There was just alot more you can do along with the title screen and everything else being immersive
I had almost 30 days played on Madden 17 which is insane because that was in less than a year, I played this madden everyday for hours when it came out. Definitely my favorite Madden ever
4:12 kinda fitting the background shows something really cool- instead of showcasing a player stats and their game character doing some awkward animation or whatever they show clips in real life which looks really damn good
I always felt like this was the last Madden where I felt like I could really trust my defense. Even though the zone coverages from 17 were carried on into future Maddens, it felt like something about them was broken in 18 onwards like defenders became way more passive. Aggressive catch was also toned down to oblivion after 17 it felt, having guys who could go up in 1 on 1s just isn't as valuable. Especially since in recent Maddens it seems like a defender just breathing on a receiver makes them drop the ball.
I loved playing Madden 17, it was the first game me and my Brother bought for our PS4, and we immediately stared making Careers in Franchise Mode, I ended up in the Browns and he stayed in the Vikings
I liked Madden 17. I think this was the one where they introduced LB/L1 high point passing which was the last feature introduced that I can't do without. It's been a while but gameplay did feel really good in that game.

@@brianodriscoll2725 agreed it never was amazing like all ea games yet it still has regressed a ton
@@sourhayes1you’re right there !. The one thing fifa had was a non pay to win ultimate team from like fifa 11-16
FIFA ultimate team was actually elite , a 100k gold team which you could grind in like a week would compete with god squads .
I remember 82 rated gold cards like doumbia who you could buy for like 2 match’s worth of coins would be insane .
Another banger of a video. I’ve been a fan since the beginning of Covid like 2020
the presentation going BACKWARDS with better hardware..... how????
Cause these similac babies gone buy it every year cause they don’t know any better so madden has no reason to change.
because the Engine they switched to is over 15 years old and has barely been updated since.
Why did I buy madden 24? Can’t edit players name without it changing player portrait…soooo lame !!!
I still play 17. It's the only game I bought new that I never deleted for space
I have the physical copy of this game and well, I still play it. This is the last DECENT Madden and it is to be clear a step down from 16.
NFL 2k5 will be the good standard forever until EA looses the license and others can make games
i’m playing it now 🐐
Good job bud, the consistency and length of your videos are amazing! One day, you shall slay the EA Dragon and the victory will be legendary! 👌
"Frostbite" makes my eye twitch uncontrollably lmao.
Scary how so much in this video applies to FIFA 17 vs EAFC 24
this and madden 11 are the only maddens I regularly play.
Madden was of course good on PS3 & 360 but also played well on the PS2 despite being towards the end of it’s lifespan.
Same I love the draft classes on those 2
i played madden 17 player franchise mode for a stupid amount of time until i finally caved and bought madden 20. I vividly remember branden gauden having a voiceline where he breaks the fourth wall and refers to the player as john asking if they are still playing the game. I’ve never seen anyone else talk about this anywhere has those happened to anyone else
Madden 92 on the Super NES was one of the first Maddens I played when I was 6 yrs old in 97 before I got Madden 98 on the 64
92 is when my Madden journey started too
@@GHOST91141 I still have a bunch of the old Madden games on PS2 from Madden 03 all the way to Madden 09. Madden 05 is my favorite of all time ❤️
Need madden 15 retrospective…want ur thoughts on it, you’re very critical of EA and I agree with you on 97% of things in regards to EA, I think madden 15 was a pretty dope madden, it’s the one I go back to play consistently
Madden simply sells a new color filter and roster update each year for $70
Larry Ridley intros hit different😢
4:12 Why tf would madden ever take out the qb video introduction showing irl highlights 🤦🏾♂️
I'm a huge modern Madden hater but I love 17s Franchise mode tbh. It had my favorite draft classes of all time, so varied with tons of physical freaks and actually relevant undrafted free agents. Obviously the gameplay was animation based and it still has rubber band AI, but with sliders I could at least get unpredictable games with stats pretty close to the sim stats and that's the most I can ask for at this point.
still the best newest madden you can get. been waiting for this episode for just this comment:
this games way better than anything thats come since. last one ill play until they get better. watching your videos ive been prompted to play older ones but still find myself popping in the ps4 disc of '17 to get the closest to modern football gaming and thats hysterically sad considering its almost ten years old now
Madden 17 is my personal darling.
THANK YOU SO MUCH 💜THIS IS THE ONLY MADDEN I PLAY TO THIS DAY!!! You read my mind n wishes🙏🏾
I’ve seen all from 1980-Now what a life of gaming
Far from perfect, but this was the last madden I actually was able to get through multiple seasons of franchise without simulating and actually enjoying playing the game.
First Madden game I consistently played so it’s very nostalgic to me. Not a good game but the gameplay is still way better than it is now
The graphics and lighting looks great
The Madden I currently play is 18 which has Frostbite but it isnt fully integrated.
@@Djiony23 True. EA forcing Bioware to use it for Anthem almost destroyed that studio.
It's hard to believe this is the Madden I played the most simply because it was a pack-in title for my Xbox One S.
I remember thinking the gameplay in 17 was okay, even though there was nothing to do in franchise.
Dont for one second drool with admiration for this game. Madden 17 was buns. Nostalgia just blinds people.
madden 17 was the first sports game i bought and oh boy how i truly miss it 😪
Honestly, this is my favorite Madden.
Heater inbound 🗣️🔥
14:40 and by Madden 25 we would be able to run Offense only practice without full uniform. Just Helmet and jerseys, like in real life or 7 on 7.
Crazy coincidence!, I was just searching for a madden 17 retrospective a couple hours sgo
I love your videos! I literally get excited when I seen a new one.
This was the last madden game I bought and played. I was so angry with how it turned out and I went back to go return it. Now I wish EA could make Madden at least playable like Madden 17. That's how LOW our expectations are.
Crazy how the block kick dive animation is stil exactly the same 8 years later
I can barely remember playing it but somehow I put 303 hours on Madden 17. Still one of my most played games. 😂
This is my favorite Madden and I played the shit outta it, I still miss the old engine.
Besides the point of this well thought out video, it made me smile seeing AP running in a viks uniform
i recently played Madden 17 again and it felt so smooth compared to everything after it.
Madden 17 was actually kinda goated and superb I had a friend who played this after college and the old Madden stuff.
I actually bought a physical copy of this game for the XBox One the other day. Haven't spent but a few minutes looking around.
I had this 5’11” 250lb fullback get 20tds and over 1500 yards a season, he was a wrecking ball.
fb rush was a 90% lock on 4th and 1 due to the animations lmao.
This game had that op Vikings defense
My dad bought me madden 05 on the gamecube and he bought 07 and kept it for himself 😂 Still my fav one!
4:12 kinda fitting the background shows something really cool- instead of showcasing a player stats and their game character doing some awkward animation or whatever they show clips in real life which looks really damn good
The graphics and animations were truly outstanding during this era.
I loved 17, was one of the best years of MUT I played. Wish they’d go back to this engine.
Draft champions kept me and my cousins on the game for years man💔
This was the last Madden I bought and the only one play now . Thanks for showing lots of Raiders footage 💀
Been playing this one recently. The draft is better than the one we got now. They literally have announcers in it
Draft Champions was so goated! I literally lived in that mode😂
Madden 16 and 17 were some of my favorites. Especially with me and the homies doing draft champions I used to love that shit 😢
I loved the opening with gronk just strokin his shi 4:49
I liked Madden 17. I think this was the one where they introduced LB/L1 high point passing which was the last feature introduced that I can't do without. It's been a while but gameplay did feel really good in that game.
