A tour through Füssen and especially the old town should of course not be missed. Through Füssen's medieval streets, past Gothic town houses and cozy street cafes invite you to linger. The highest town in Bavaria (800 to 1,200 m) is worth a visit, which is evident not only in the area, but also in the town itself.
The city located in the Ostallgäu offers visitors a wonderful panorama of the Alps. In addition to the picturesque old town and the mountains towering into the sky in the background, Füssen in Allgäu impresses above all with the variety of churches worth seeing, the Sankt Mang monastery and the high castle of Füssen.
The Lechfall, the view from the Kalvarienberg and the Baumgarten city park are also impressive.
The small town of Füssen with 15,000 inhabitants is one of the major tourist centers in the Allgäu. The city of Füssen and its integrated places, such as Weissensee and the neighboring communities, such as Schwangau, are very well developed for tourism. Located on the edge of the Alps between numerous lakes, Füssen has a very beautiful medieval old town, overlooked by the High Castle. In the city center there are good shopping opportunities and nice street cafes, in the pedestrian zone you can still find many individual shops and not just the big chains.
Füssen is of course famous for the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Apart from these, Füssen has beautiful surroundings with many lakes and the western Ammergau Alps. There are still many hiking trails of varying difficulty around Füssen.

St. Mang - monastery and church
The name St. Mang goes back to Saint Magnus, who came to the Allgäu as a missionary and built a chapel in Füssen and a hut for himself. Other monks joined them and small residential and work buildings quickly became a monastery with a cloister and farm yard, which was subordinate to the Augsburg bishops and who furnished them with real estate.
Around the year 1000 they inaugurated the predecessor building of today's St. Mang's Church, whereby the Romanesque forms can still be seen in the tower. The baroque complex, one of the outstanding sights in Füssen, was built from 1701 under the direction of master builder Johann Jakob Herkomer.
The region around Füssen is also characterized by the many lakes. There is the Alatsee, the Weißensee, the Hopfensee, the Alpsee (right next to the royal castles), the Schwansee and the largest, the Forggensee.
