  • In 1986 a concert tour was put together to support the work of Amnesty International in securing the rights of political prisoners, fighting the injustice of Apartheid in South Africa, and raising awareness among American youth that they could play a part in the struggle if they chose to do so. U2 was on top of their game, and put together an inspiring set.
    U2 Setlist downloaded 03 June 2020 from: www.u2gigs.com/show501.html
    Setlist:
    MLK
Pride (In the Name of Love)
    Bad
    Sunday Bloody Sunday
Maggie's Farm / Cold Turkey (snippet)
    Help
    Sun City (with Lou Reed)
    encore(s):
    Invisible Sun (with The Police)
I Shall Be Released (with Joan Baez, The Neville Brothers, Lou Reed, Jackson Browne, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams, The Police)
Comments: Amnesty International's 'Conspiracy Of Hope' Tour. Lou Reed, Nona Hendrix, Little Steven, and Ruben Blades join U2 for Sun City. Bono joins The Police for Invisible Sun. I Shall Be Released is an All-star Finale.

To see Greg Carroll whipping around the stage keeping Bono's mic untangled, and 19 days later, he dies from a motorcycle accident...his life cut short, but thru U2 he will be alive forever...

i remember being 13 years old, basically lived right down the block from Giants Stadium . Listen to U2 every day, over and over ..I was obsessed with Under a Blood Red Sky and then UF blew my mind. My parents wouldn't let me go, for whatever reason, cant even remember who was going to take me. I was in shock U2 was even in NJ, devastated i couldn't be there, but loving this music all in the same moment as i was listening live. What a crowd

The Unforgettable Fire. A perfect album at the perfect time. 30 years later, still remains my favorite. I've seen U2 several times, but I was too young to see them at this period. Which is a shame, I'd have given a lot to see them when they were a band like this.

i love this concert for many reasons. Ive been a MASSIVE U2 fan since 85 growing up in a suburb of Toronto. I was on the verge of 16 when this concert happened. it was such an event i remember the build up i was psyched. I researched the TV channels and radio stations ahead of time so i wouldnt miss one minute and especially U2. i recorded the radio station CFNY 1021.1 feed on my stereo that had a tape deck in it haha! and now i am 49 and i live in North NJ area and have been to Giants Stadium ( Ive been here 23 years it'll always be giants stadium lol) many times for shows and games etc. this show has deepeer meaning to me now especially 'that it was where I now reside. LOVE THAT THIS IS ON TH-cam and SPOTIFY etc so its everywhere to listen to anytime i want. The tape cassette recording collects dust ha . Thanks for posting the full set!

This was right before the entire US was swept up in U2 mania - with the 'Joshua Tree' 9 months off - at the 2:43 point - THAT is where this band became the sole savage contenders for the world title - and everyone there and those watching absolutely knew it.

I was at the Chicago/Rosemont performance. The roar of the crowd when they finally came out on stage was the most frightening thing I have ever heard . It was a roar that actually drowned them out for most of MLK....the power they held on the crowd was unlike anything I could have imagined...think Beatles, Shea Stadium...everyone around us was screaming, crying...I have never experienced like it since. The most intense 25 minutes of concert I have ever seen or ever will see...

Jeff N ..I was at that show in Chicago also. I completely agree with your comments. The most incredible set I have ever seen...it was too short the audience did not want it to end. The energy was absolutely amazing. I was very excited at the time to see the Police reunion. Their set was a total letdown after U2 stole the show and showed the world that they were now the greatest band in the world!

I was at this concert with my high school sweetheart at the time. We had floor tickets. An unbearably hot day, but what a great concert experience. I remember when they turned on the firehoses to cool down the crowds during the day. This was the concert when the Police got back together, but I always thought U2 and Bryan Adams stole the show that evening.

The night before, the whole band walked through the lobby of the Westin Hotel there in Chicago where they had put all the bands performing at the show. When my brother and I asked the band for their autographs Bono sat us down in a couch bay there in the lobby and spent the next 5 minutes explaining Amnesty International’s mission to us. These guys walked their philanthropic talk.

I was at that show with my brother...and 50,000 other people. I was 16. He was 19. My mother drove us up from Maryland to go. We stayed at some seedy hotel not far from the stadium. It was in ear shot of the all the sound checks the morning of the show.
I remember that to get tickets to the show we had to send money to some concert address. From there it was a random chance whether they would send tickets or send the money back. I got two floor tickets. My friend who sent his letter with me, he got his money back.
Going into the show it was a mob scene. There were so many people! Everyone seemed to be in a good mood.
My bro got separated from me pretty early on. During the first act, The Hooters, he and a cute girl became fascinated with each other. I worked my way towards the stage. The closer to the front the more it felt like a sardine. It took a while but I got right up front and center (actually a few feet left of dead center, and about 2 feet behind the front barricade). I can see my arm in some of this video, and in the Police set because I kept swinging my shirt around. I did it on purpose because my friends' were taping it at home. At the beginning of Invisible Sun (The Police) You can also here this loud mouth dude that was right next to me. Then I began singing the song before Sting started, and you can hear that too. I got a real kick out of hearing that when I first watched my friends' VHS tape.
The day was really hot and sunny. There was no water, and no way to get it. Being packed together made it almost unbearably toasty. By the time Peter Gabriel came on I felt like I was in a dream, from thirst. It is a wonder that no one died. Occasionally they sprayed hoses on us, but the relief was fleeting. At some point during Peter Gabriel somebody in the Ground crew threw a bunch of ice into the crowd by me. I grabbed a huge chunk, and guarded it like gold....After consuming the whole thing, it brought me back from my dreamy heat exhaustion. Sunset also improved the situation.
It was an epic day. U2 was awesome, but I was most stoked for the Police. I had never seen them before. They had not played together for years , but it did not show. They were tight. They had the place shaking…… No one knew if they would ever play again…..and as it turned out, they didn’t for almost 20 years. And their were so many classic acts that day. Some that were appreciate even more deeply in the years that followed (Fela, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell to name a few).

A few days before U2 left home to fly to the States to start this tour, The Edge realised he had forgotten all of the early songs. A U2 staffer went out and bought cassettes of the first three albums - he knew everything from the fourth album The Unforgettable Fire . On the plane over The Edge sat there with his guitar, and with a large battery operated cassette player, learning the songs.

@@michaelpatrickmoran No problem. U2 were very busy for the first four years of their professional career, an album and world tour each year. Things went a bit quiet around 1985, just a few gigs and of course the famous Live Aid appearance. They also released an EP "Wide Awake In America". The next album, "The Joshua Tree", was meant to come out in 1986, but it wasn't finished and ready for release until 1987, so between the summer of 1985 - Live Aid - and the album's release in March of 1987 (I think it was March it came out) people didn't hear much from U2, but one exception was these 'Conspiracy Of Hope' gigs in America in 1986. When "The Joshua Tree" did come out in 1987, the hunger for U2 was so intense that it broke sales records across the world and became one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

The period from 1983-1986 was the best U2 period.
The War album and tour, Under A Blood Red Sky, The Unforgettable Fire album and tour, Live Aid, Bono's part in Clannad's song In A Lifetime, Self Aid, Conspiracy of Hope concerts... they were on fire those days.
They were on a mission and everyone saw it coming. For sure the Joshua Tree album finally took them to the top and their 90s experimental stuff was exciting too but here they still had that "Lets conquer the world" vibe.
Last 20 years it has been a downhill ride, but the great 80s memories are still intact.

This was actually structured to make up for the mistakes made in the Live Aid set! At Live Aid they never got to play Pride because bad went on for over 12 minutes, so for this show they made sure that they played Pride first! (Well, after MLK!) They also played a shortened version of Bad to make sure it didn't go overtime again!

To : michaelpatrickmoron, Thank you for showing this video & I hope you have more for us to watch, It brought back memories and I too turned up the volume my stereo speakers and I too have sorround speakers! I have a Sony TV and its huge and I have one in my family room w/woofer speakers and another one on the patio, I played a 6:00 pm show until 11:00 pm? Nobody complained about the noise because they where all at my house and I have a huge backyard and I must of had at least 30 people and they all brought food to share with everyone & I ordered 50 pepperoni pizzas and 50 cheese pizzas? I do this every year and I watched everyone having a good time on my patio steps, Last year I showed a Sir Paul McCartney concert at 7:00 pm until 11:00 pm concert! Everyone enjoyed the show on my Sony TV and the surround sound speakers really did the trick and the cops came to my house and saw a whole lot of people in my back yard and they couldn't do anything about it because everyone in my neighborhood was there and whose gonna complain about the noise and the neighbors said goodbye as the 10 cops left in their squad cars? Plus I had a license that I got from the court house, so I could do this and the cops couldn't do anything about this and the neighborhood loved every minute of it? On the forth of July, I showed the Amnesty International Concert at 1:00 pm until 11:00 pm and everyone loved U2 as I sat on my patio steps and looking at all the people that where there and they all sang along with BONO, I couldn't believe my eyes of what I heard next? It was hard not to laugh of what I was hearing, Everyone was singing along to every U2 song and it was priceless to watch all my friends and family and of course the whole freaking neighborhood having a great time! I don't care what race you are, they where all their having a good time and if there having a good time, then I'm having a good time? ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

Thank you for your comment Felicia and I am glad you enjoyed the video. I do have other tracks from the concert up on my channel, but I will do some checking to see what I put up and what I did not from my original master tape. Maybe I can upload some more tracks or even the whole recording in one upload. I will look into it.
I actually know where Cape May Courthouse is, and it sounds like you throw a great party. Thanks again for viewing and commenting. Peace.

I remember listening to this concert the last day of my Senior Week in Wildwood NJ. We were just waiting to go home. Looking back this concert symbolized the end of high school for me and the band I grew up with. Live Aid and Amnesty turned this underground band into giants.
Suddenly everybody had the Under a Blood Red Sky cassette and the rest is history. Bono turned his mullet in for Morrisonesque and transcended the 80's with Joshua Tree just a few months away. You can hear Joshua Tree in Cold Turkey.
I still like U2 but this is the U2 I loved.

Embarrassed to say I just turned 63 and just recently became a U2 and Led Zeppelin/Robert Plant fans even though I worked in the music industry in the US from 1977-1989. I was into Elton, Springsteen, The Who and many others BUT I must have missed seeing any picture of Plant in the early 70’s and watching Bono’s passion for performing anywhere. So I gotta play catchup. I absolutely adore Bono’s fits of emotions, while singing, little jumps, the tossing over a monitor or mic pole and I saw none of that in about 8 videos from a show last week in Vegas. Can you help?
#1 are there any closer videos of him on this Amnesty show?
#2 recommendations appreciated for earlier concert footage I can find would be greatly appreciated.
I want to see MORE of this young Bono!!

Thanks for viewing and commenting. I don't have any additional footage myself from the Amnesty show. Although I haven't seen it on youtube there was a broadcast of a performance I believe from Red Rocks CO in the 80's where he carried a white flag that really brought the band to my attention, if you can find that performance.
