  • As a bonus to close out our AT food storage video, I discuss shelter food storage options and etiquette. The takeaway: raccoons are worse than bears if you ask me.

Great Video. Answered a lot of questions for someone that has never used one before. Really appreciate your time and effort putting this together. You always do a great job with your videos. Keep the videos coming, I'm learning a lot.

    Hi Cobweb
    Great job on food storage.
I noticed the shelter in your video thumbprint. That's the new shelter at Canopus Lake. If you look at the picture of that shelter in Farout, that's my picture! One of my shakedown for my '22 attempt went thru there a month after they built it. It was so new, there was no pic in the app so I sent them one. My enduring claim to fame!

Totally off topic but I’d love you to interview your tramily member (or friend) that hammock camped. I’m planning to do so in 2025.

No one in my tramily hammock camped, but I know a lot of people who did. Since I’ve never hammock camped myself, I’m not comfortable making a video about it, but let me check around with my friends from trail and see if I can connect you with someone to ask questions!

I'll mention... after finishing the hike, hammocking is something I wish I'd looked into more. I initially dismissed it because I like the little "house" of my tent. After experiencing limited and busy tenting areas, rocky/rooty ground, and seeing the abundance of trees on the AT, it's worth seriously looking into. I'm not sure I'd do it differently in hindsight, but I can see the upsides of hammocks a lot more now.

Frozen (Jason) of Frozen's Outdoor Adventures did the AT in 2019 and hammock camped the trip. He has several videos about hammock camping on his channel.

Virginia had bear poles , I think for sure the Shenandoah’s had bear poles .

That sounds right! Now that I think back to it, definitely stayed at a shelter in the Shennies with a bear pole! Poles were the least common to find at shelters in my experience. Thanks for adding that info!
