- I've got a big box of guitar parts! Everything I need to build a guitar. I don't typically do guitar kits or build guitars myself, but this seems so easy... why not give it a shot. With a pre-painted guitar body and maple neck with the frets and nut preinstalled, this is about as easy as it gets for building your own guitar.

I used to be a Floyd Rose guy but now give me a proper nut with graphite a set of locking tuners and a Wilkinson Trem and I can do everything I used to do with the Floyd with out haveig to double lock. Dives & pull ups. My other guitarist still finds it hard to believe I stay in tune with all the craziness.

That's great to know as it can save me $200-$300 or so on models that come with both the FR and the Wilkinson as options.
Keep in mind Van Halen did his first whole world tour without a Floyd. Just a standard Fender vibrato!
I have a Yamaha Pacifica 612 with those features plus locking tuners and it’s insane how much whammy bar abuse it can take! As much as I like it, I also still like the Floyd Rose for a true ‘80’s look
Respect to those who can do this, I can hardly build a sandwich without forgetting to take the plastic off the cheese.
I'm looking forward to watching this come together. My interest in the Kwik Plug system is very simple, being here over 3/4 of a century, with cornea and arthritis problems, soldering (which used to be something I took for granted) has become more of a challenge than the risk vs reward. At this stage in my life, I think a plug and play system might be the most effective and advantageous way for me to go. Thanks for another great video, Max! Please keep them coming.

I do hope your XGP is better than the Lido body and neck that I bought. The neck pocket was poorly routed and the neck came with some backbow and the truss rod nut stripped out as soon as I tried to turn it. Needless to say, I was mad as hell. I couldn't return it because I had already drilled into it. So, it is assembled and hanging on my wall like a piece of art. I am NOT an art lover.
UPDATE.... tossed the defective neck into the trash and put a Squier Affinity neck on the body after some sanding on the neck pocket. Very playable now....
Yeah, I had to spend an extra $100 to get a guy to fix my neck pocket situation. That was Lido neck and body.
Agreed. The necks are horrid and close to being beyond fixable.
Yeah my lido neck was terrible too, truss rod adjustment totally stripped and so many high frets it was pathetic. Also it was advertised as a "rosewood" board, and it's obviously not. But hey it was "affordable"...
I have used MANY of their bodies and really like them for the $. The necks I have tried are garbage. I buy necks from other sources now. But I have had zero issues with all the bodies (10) that I have used. Both XGP and Lido.
I would be mad, too! Sorry to hear that. I have occasionally toyed with the idea of trying to build a guitar myself, but ultimately I leave it up to the professionals. Even a cheap instrument made in a factory probably has the potential to be a better guitar than anything I could build. Max, I like the green finish. I just hope they sent you good enough part's to make a decent guitar. Good luck!

Max this is great. A lot of people would never consider building their own axe because they think of how difficult it is. Its actually not as hard to do. I cant wait to see how this turns out.!!
I don't have any experience with their necks, but I've built several partscasters using GFS pickups and wiring harness as well as their XGP bodies, and they've all turned out great.
I've been wanting to do a hardtail S-type guitar with an HS pickup layout and a green & black colour scheme for ages. Definitely digging this build.

Looking forward to the build. I've heavily modded my Strat over the years, so here's a couple tips that I've learned along the way that you might want to consider, and some things that I've done that match your preferences. I removed the Middle pickup too, and replaced the bridge with a single coil size humbucker and positioned it parallel to the bridge, and replaced the neck pickup with a noiseless pickup.
I moved the position of the Volume knob a little down and forward, as it was interfering with Palm Muting. I removed the Blade Switch, and replaced it with a 3-way mini-Toggle Switch and moved its location to the Upper Cutaway Horn area. I tested it in the Lower Cutaway Horn area, but it seems I grab or put my arm on that area more frequently than I thought. I put a Tone Pot with its own Cap on the Bridge Pickup, and use it all the time to dial in just the right tone.
Love this kit. Can't wait for the next part.

So glad to see this. A long time ago, I bought a strat guitar kit on eBay. I upgraded the hardware, but the action was too high. I shimmed the neck, but still too high. As soon as I can, I'm going to order a neck & body from Guitar Fetish. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out for you. Thanks

Pretty cool, always fun to tinker around on a build when you have some extra time. I felt the same about tremolos-for almost 40 years really, ha ha. All I really played mostly was Metal. But I always loved Stevie Ray Vaughan too, just so aggressive. I was always amazed how he could play so heavy with such a clean tone. Then, I got better with the Texas blues over the years, and finally got a few Strats during the pandemic.
That’s when you realize how awesome those Strat style trems are! Like blues greats say, you gotta be ready for it. Just take some of us longer than others. A
For many years I would just take out the neck pick up altogether, and the toggle switch… I was/am really into Eddie. But after getting that Strat, again, for the blues, you got to have that middle pick up to get that tone-fourth position on the blade. Then, something I never thought I would be into, is a single coil in the bridge. But now I am able to get a lead tone that I’ve been chasing for years, it’ll rip your head off.
Anyway, just getting ready for my gig tonight, got my new Jackson Rhoads, Anthrax tribute. Like I said, I mostly play Metal!!! 🤘🏻😝🎸🇺🇸

I can’t wait to see how this comes out. I’ve been mulling over doing an explorer with reverse hockey stick head stock for a while. I always loved that combo since seeing Eric Peterson use it on the green ESP he used for a while
Big fan of both GFS and your show Max. Love some of the choices on your build. The only possible hangup is the nut. It’s one of those things that tend to obligate you to learn more and buy more tools or seek help to get things playable at the end.

I've built a few guitars and I have some that I'm working on. I like that I can change components to upgrade or split coils if I want to.
I've used a quick plug system. They work great!

Just did the same thing recently, at least for the most part. Picked up a blem GFS XGP hardtail Strat body in surf green and a blem maple XGP 22 fret Tele neck, along with a hardtail bridge and a set of tuners.
I had to re-shape the neck heel to fit the Tele neck in the Strat body. I was initially going to go with a traditional Strat pickup arrangement, but I changed gears and used a single Shed PAF-Daddy humbucker I’ve had lying around along with a Warmoth pearloid guard cut for just a bridge humbucker. Such a fun guitar.
I did a GFS HT strat (HH/tele controls) kit recently and did a shellac finish on both the body and neck. It's awesome!

I bought a couple of necks on Aliexpress and just put 2 flying v's together, really cool guitars!

Looking forward to this. My first electric was a Kramer with an HS pickup configuration - although mine was rear routed and didn't have a pickguard.
It's a pickup config I'd consider using again. I'm also not crazy about the middle pickup on a Strat, unless it's in conjunction with the bridge pickup (assuming said bridge pickup is a single-coil).
I've had great success building two instruments with parts from Warmoth. One of them is a "super Strat" with a Floyd Rose, Sustainiac, and birdseye maple neck. Cost me something in the range of $2200 (including ~$400 tech labor cost at a local shop for installing the Sustainiac correctly) all together. If I would have gone through Fender Custom Shop for the same thing I imagine it would have cost well over $3K. It's my main axe now.
Warmoth prices are considerably higher than GuitarFetish, but it's premium quality stuff and their customer service is spectacular.
Looks like a box of fun to me . Great color choice and pick up configuration choice ! All kinds of unforeseen stuff. You might have to shim the neck pocket maybe even level and polish some guitar frets. Enjoy the journey:-) I wouldn't even mind viewing your struggles. Cuz it's real!

This is pretty cool. like others have said, can't wait to see the final product. Just me, but with everything you have there, I think the only thing I would have done different, would have been blacked out tuners instead of the chrome. Very cool and fun video.

Looking forward to the final build. I just applied for the contest that GFS is doing right now (build your own custom guitar), so I might "steal" a few of your ideas for parts, etc. The two humbucker Kwik-Plug wiring harness is a must for nearly all of my guitars.

I used the VEH in a Steinberger Spirit and loved it. I’ve seen some people calling the pickup the Van Eddie Halen.
Max, you're the first guy I've heard say that he doesn't like the six-screw vintage-style Strat vibrato besides myself. For decades I didn't get near one because I couldn't afford anything with one, the I bought a (very) cheap one from a pawn shop. When I got around to examining it, I couldn't believe my eyes! Obviously it works and has for longer than my lifetime so far, but Leo Fender was really reaching to bring this one in at a cost he could deal with. I favor Floyds like you do, although I'm trying my first two-point non-locking vibe now.
I just bought a sea foam green Lido body and prewired HH pickguard from them. I have a Mighty Mite neck I'm using.
Love the color! Would have loved to have seen it as a super strat with a Floyd Rose.
I ordered one of their XGP necks a few months ago and I was astounded by the fret work. It was by far the best feeling neck I have ever tried except my Vintage Hendrix model strat neck. The GFS neck had a lot of nylon or polyester on it. Just a little to think for me but that was the only complaint I had and typically I am hard to please.

That seemed like it s going to be a cool guitar I've always wanted to put a humbucker in the neck of a strap and maybe a single coil in the bridge I honestly don't play too much on the bridge to me it's too twangy but I think it's still be cool to build one and especially the plug in play system that is awesome
I get a fair bit of Jake E Lee vibes from that build. Such an under appreciated guitarist.
I'm playing a guitar right now with some GFS parts in it. Boston blues pickups and the active preamp.
Built almost the same (green/olive) strat... only differences- double zebra humbuckers (that I can split with a swicth as well) and 2 point tremolo... if you set em up correctly they hold tune very well, I prefer em to a floyd

I have the three single coil pickups(in green) & the knobs
are green as well. Both of those I got from Dragonfire gtrs.
Overall I am extremely happy with my super Strat! Used it
on recordings, gigs etc. I plan to build a few more guitar kit-
like guitars. I really like the way they turn out!
I think your setup looks cool! On a kit job a hardtail is the safer option, otherwise you might have some woodworking to do with a more complex bridge. I don't normally like green, but you have an almost British Racing Green tone which looks great. The black guard goes well with it.
Got an HB kit a couple of years back just to gain some confidence in the build process, and the electronics. Tuners are cheap and a little unstable and the neck feels more Gibson style in that "bends" fairly easily. But I dropped Seymour Duncams in it and it's one of the best sounding instruments I own! Of course you can take a basic kit and customise the paint job or add decals or use different coloured hardware and knobs to create what you want. I can highly recommend it just as hobby and something fun to do.
I've always loved this idea and wanted to make my own custom guitar
It's an awesome experience , I did one in the spring and it came out pretty good. The most time consuming thing is painting it , but I customized mine with locking tuner's and changed the bridge and pickups. The neck is off the charts , no sprouting and frets were level. The neck was so nice and smooth I left it the way it was , I got mine from a company called Bex on Amazon. My wife got it for me last Christmas....
Very easy to do. I've built a few partscasters from their stuff. Everything works well together, but definitely be careful about if you get an XGP body, get an XGP neck. The LIDO stuff isn't cross compatible with XGP. Both are great though. I did a double bound seafoam green tele style guitar and it might be the high watermark for partscasters for me. Definitely worth giving it a go!

I have built 4 guitars using GFS bodies and necks. There is a little fitting work to do but the components are very good quality.

no pre drilled holes also lets you fine tune the pickups side to side and front to back, as in harmonics, once you line it up side to side with the E strings in place, then move it front to back plucking your harmonics in the bridge position find the strongest placement, start as far back as she goes, then as far forward, see where the strongest harmonics are, its really nice when you can do this, specially if the bridge holes are not drilled cuz then you get to find the best of both worlds, harmonics and intonation, I go for intonation (bridge placement) first then cuz its more important tome then I set the harmonics ..
i really dig their quick plugs stuff, you can get the full monty set up then remove say if you're going for a single volume deal, swapping pups is a breeze plus its real solid
If I don't run a P90 in the neck, and I'm doing a 2 pickup configuration, I usually do a noiseless single or single coil sized humbucker. I love GFS pickups. I have an Epiphone with Dream 180 and Dream 90 run through a Seymour Duncan Active Blackouts Preamp drop in volume pot. The output is a little hot for clean tones, so I need a compressor pedal. Dropped B chugga chugga and weedle deedle WEEEE sounds amazing through every amp I plug it through.

I mod almost every guitar I buy !! Its just my opinion but ALL Electric Guitars should come stock with Locking Tuners !! That's always my 1st mod !!! I want the easy string change and (resonance / not the word I was trying to think of but player's get my meaning ) locking tuners give ! MAX or other Shred players thoughts ??
I have an 90 MIM Fender Strat that I made into a hum/single configuration with a 3 way, volume and one tone.
I hope it comes out good cause I bought a explorer type kit and the neck pocket was routed to big the neck fitted to lose so I had to do some wood filler for it to fit perfectly.🎸👍
Since you like Floyd Rose then this would be the perfect guitar to put on the top mounted FRX Floyd, but either way it'll be a cool build to see when it's done!!
Max, wish you would check out the "Vega-Trem" drop in strat replacement. Seems almost to good to be true.
I’d be able to put that together in two hours tops. Those pickups are great. I use them all the time. Most GFS parts are from China so they are affordable. Good luck

EVH's Frankenstrat was 'supered' with a humbucker and a '58 Strat tremolo and set the guitar industry on fire long before the Floyd Rose tremolo... anyhoo, that's going to be an exciting build.

if you want a good humbucker neck to pair with the VEH (GREAT CHOICE btw. Exactly what I'd go with!) I would say the Fat Pat neck is perfect for it. and if you want a good single coil sized rail humbucker, I'd recommend the Lil Puncher. both by GFS as well.

I got a 7 string kit and some used EMG 707's and I am gonna do the 18v mod
HS is my preferred configuration too, and on my Strat I just bolt the middle pickup all the way down so it's out of the way, I barely ever use it.
I buy a lot of parts from them to modify my guitars. The only item that I did not like was the pickups. Probably because I am used to using Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan for the past 30 years. Other that that, everything else is awesome!
I like all the finished body and neck options that GFS has to offer. What is disappointing is they don’t offer them in left handed options. I’ve contacted them in the past to see if they would be available in left handed versions and the answer was no, due to “retooling cost”. I’m sure these bodies and necks are made on a CNC mill for speed of production. I work in a CNC machine shop, it’s a simple program change to make a mirror image. It would be great if GFS would offer lefty versions of their finished bodies and necks in the future.
Yes Max, we love Floyd Rose, it's the most powerful tremolo system but someone hates it.
Wonder if Guitar Fetish could tackle the design idea I've had in my head for the last couple of years, one which I imagine would need to be designed from the ground up. When I picture is a slightly reduced size model with a body built out of plexiglass or some other type of polycarb instead of wood, shaped like a parallelogram (I would name the guutar Neil), chambered like a semi-hollow and painted metallic blue with a touch of green. No pick guard would be included All three of the pickups would be dog ear P90s; the electronics would be synonymous with what Andrew Guyton has been installing in his Brian May Red Special emulations. I would also choose to approximate the bridges of Brian and Andrew's guitars. The neck and fingerboard would likely be maple, but the scale, fret number, inlay and headstock wood otherwise emulate Brian's Special. It's highly unlikely a guitar matching those specs could be designed and assembled on a budget.
I'd probably do Humbucker-Single-HP90 with the single and humbucker sized P90 set so they are in opposing wind and phase configuration.
Hey Max. I think this guitar build would be perfect for songs that require alternate tuning. If you wanted to play Kasmir for example it would be a simple matter tune that guitar to DADGAD.
i'm building a gfs tele kit right now . . . currently refretting the neck and putting some carves on the body and neck heel block. Really interested in how yours turns out
I'd go with a black input jack and green knobs.
I’d love one of these kits in a Jazzmaster HH body with the output jack on the bottom side like a Les Paul. I have a bolt on Epiphone Les Paul Junior (the ones that came with the first Rocksmith on the Xbox 360/ps3). I painted it purple, got a nameless maple Gibson L6 style neck, Gotoh 510 wraparound bridge and a Seymour Duncan Invader bridge for the pickup and its F@#$ing mean. I’d love these kits in a 24 fret Jazzmaster in candy apple red with dual humbucker configuration, wraparound bridge like the Contemporary Jazzmaster HH-ST, black pick guard, dark fretboard, body match the neck, graphtech nut, Seymour Duncan JB set.
I like it. I think I would be nervous about drilling for the bridge. Do you drill using the pick guard as the template? With how much guitars are these days I would think of doing this. Especially that it is solderless.
I would try to match the body paint and do the headstock the same color.
Nice build. don't know if I'm a strat guy, just don't like the plastic guard. more for single cut, just think it looks nicer. when you play guitar do you always jam or do you play to songs?
I'm not a strat fan as a tele and les paul player I can't get away with the middle pickup and it gets in my way also when picking. And the sound always seems muted especially the middle and neck setting. I've actually been looking for a vintage hardtail strat ( lefty) for years in the UK to convert into the same configuration but using stacked pickups. Looking forward to the build MAX!
I'll give you the tip the best trem for Fender type guitars that give the same versatility as a Floyd Rose is the Vega Trem . So check out Vega Trem and get them to send you a Trem for that guitar you will be amazed and do some Vai moves on the strat.
I've recently added a list of parts to my "Cart" on Guitarfetish to build a Tele Style Guitar. I want to put my own stained finish on it with all gold hardware. I was at a local store recently called "Woodcraft" looking for some different types of 3/16th inch flavors of wood to make my own Pickguard for it. Just waiting to have the funds to check out!!
