🎯 The predicted question for Macbeth in the 2024 AQA exam is likely to be on the theme of the supernatural, specifically focusing on the witches and their influence on Macbeth.
01:45
🎯 Shakespeare's purpose in Macbeth is to flatter King James and explore the concept of fate versus free will. Macbeth's actions and the prophecies of the witches raise questions about the control we have over our own lives.
04:15
🎯 The witches' influence on Macbeth is a complex matter. While they provide prophecies and manipulate his desires, Macbeth's own ambitions and character flaws play a significant role in his downfall.
07:10
🎯 Lady Macbeth's role is influenced by the patriarchal context of the time. She is driven by her lack of power and societal expectations, leading her to manipulate and support Macbeth in his quest for power.
10:30
🎯 The theme of violence in Macbeth is closely tied to the character's ambition and bloodlust. The witches' prophecies and Macbeth's own desires push him towards a path of violence and destruction.
12:45
🎯 The question of kingship in Macbeth highlights the qualities of a good king. Duncan's lack of political acumen and Macbeth's inability to maintain loyalty among his nobles demonstrate the importance of wise leadership.
15:20
🎯 Lady Macbeth's descent into guilt and madness reflects the consequences of her actions and the disintegration of her marriage. The patriarchal roles and expectations imposed on her contribute to her downfall.

question was so easy, i talked about how lady macbeth is linked to the witches, which shows her strength. Mr Salles thank you so much for ur analysis on unsex me here i wrote so much
for "in thunder, lightning and rain" could you also talk about pathetic fallacy and how the witches bring about chaos and quite an unsettling mood at the start of the play.
Yes
Isn't it also a context link to how James' boat was almost sunk in a storm and he blamed it on a witches curse?

@@yeetusnoodle he told u how to link the entire essay plan onto lady macbeth so partially yh
The essay was on Lady Macbeth, but I could still use loads of your points and link it since the patriarchy and the struggles of women worked really well with the theme!
I was also able to link in your points about Macbeth's hamartia since the question was on the power of lady Macbeth, and I could argue that it was more Macbeth's hamartia than her experience which pushed him to regicide.
Thanks for making this great video!
The supernatural for Macbeth would be a great one

Plan for the Witches
1. Thesis - King James - Fate - Free will (Patriarchy)
2. 'in thunder, lightning or in rain'... 'there to meet will with Macbeth.
3. Just prophecies - 'Cawdor', 'king hereafter'
4. 'Why do I yield to that suggestion,... horrid image... unfix my hair
5. 'If chance may have me king, why chance may crown me, without my stir'
6. 'To win us to our harms, the instruments of darkness tell us truths"
7. Perhaps motive 'you should be women, and yet your beads' Patriarchal
8. 'A dagger of the mind', 'heat oppressed brain'
9. 'Thou canst not say I did Never shake thy gory locks at me'.
10. 'I am bent to know, by the worst means, the worst'
11. By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.'
12. 'None of woman born shall harm Macbeth.'-riddle-not action
13. 'a poor player' 'a walking shadow' 'tale told by an idiot'-nihilism, responsibility.
14. 'What's he that was not of born woman? Such a one am I to fear.'
15. Conclusion cautionary tale, inherent evil not supernatural, is responsible
Thanks for posting this!
@@MrSallesTeachesEnglish How do I actually use these plans. If I'm writing this essay accordingly, how do I make these fit into my paragraphs and writing?
@@banditahm5221 pick out the best quotes that align with your thesis statement, then zoom into a key word or short phrase from the quote that highlights your point - give an alternate view to the one you're posing, and link it to context/authors intent !
for example "why do i yield to that image?" suggests that macbeths morality is already thinning, as he's thinking about the prophecies as possibilities rather than nonsense. this is specifically shown through the quote being a question, as it elucidates to his uncertainty and confusion; perhaps he is even frightened by his own acceptance of the idea. alternatively, it could imply that he was doomed to a fate of corruption from the start, since evidently, here, it has only taken a simple prophecy for him to be considering an act of regicide and usurpation. this helps to convey a sense of danger regarding the witches and the supernatural, since they have manipulated and/or challenged macbeths moral stance which is leading him to consider the notion of becoming king. shakespeare perhaps did this to stress the importance and danger of witchcraft, and discourage the audience from following in macbeths footsteps - appealing to king james

- 💡 The witches in Macbeth play a significant role in manipulating Macbeth's desires and propelling him towards his tragic fate. However, it is ultimately Macbeth's own ambitions and character flaws that drive his actions and lead to his downfall.
- 💡 Lady Macbeth's character is shaped by the patriarchal context of the time, where women had limited power and societal expectations were heavily influenced by appearance and attractiveness. Her manipulation and ambition are driven by her desire for power in a society that denies her agency.
- 💡 The theme of violence in Macbeth is closely tied to the character's ambition and bloodlust. The prophecies of the witches and Macbeth's own desires fuel his willingness to commit heinous acts, leading to a destructive path of violence.
- 💡 The question of kingship in Macbeth highlights the qualities of a good king. Duncan's lack of political acumen and Macbeth's failure to maintain loyalty among his nobles demonstrate the importance of wise leadership and the consequences of poor decision-making.
- 💡 Lady Macbeth's descent into guilt and madness reflects the consequences of her actions and the deterioration of her marriage. The societal expectations and patriarchal roles placed upon her contribute to her downfall, as she struggles to reconcile her desires with the limitations imposed by her gender.
Thanks 🙏

hi sir! thank you so much for all your help, gotten me from a 5 to an 8/9ish(i think LOL, and your guides are incredibly helpful), can you mark this for me please :) it's a paragraph about setting in jekyll and hyde
Stevenson uses setting to create a disturbing and threatening atmosphere by continuously employing pathetic fallacy to accentuate the liminality of the surroundings. The writer depicts a 'fog' which covered the 'drowned city'. The idea of fog creates a disturbing atmosphere as it acts like a blanket, concealing all, and possibly alluding to promiscuity and heinous acts which would've been scorned upon in the Victorian Era. Moreover, fog is a phenomenon which not only separates, but creates unity as it touches all, leaving everything universalised. Potentially, the author utilises the recurring motif of fog to scare the Christocentric audience which would've been horrified at the underlying message the fog conveyed- the idea the humanity is intrinsically linked. Subtly, the writer may be conveying a subliminal message that despite their scornfulness of Jekyll- who became a slave to his insatiable desires, at our true, pure essence, all of humanity cannot escape their desires, despite stringent constraints placed on citizens, particularly Victorian Gentlemen. This masterfully, creates a threatening atmosphere as readers are prompted to indulge in self-reflection. Contrary to generic gothic books published at the time, like Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde focuses on the caged devil that lives within all of us. Moreover, the fog would act as a barrier, the wickedness of humanities sins is so great that God must be shielded from it. Potentially, Stevenson is encouraging his audience to reform their views as it perpetuates evil and would be disturbing to God.

If you had a list of Shakespeare’s purposes of writing Macbeth, what would they be? I always find it hard to identity what an author is trying to do, since it’s never directly in the text.
You could include the supernatural as King jamses was interested in witches spirits. Stuff like that for context.

i know its a peculiar question but did the witches grow beards before or after they became witches, because them growing beards illustrates how their unparalleled ambition for power leading to them adopting masculine traits, or them having beards led them to have insignificatn value as a womens beauty shaped their value in society in this patriarchical time
