I began at a Starting Strength Gym about 2 months ago. The class I am in has 4 older women (of which I am one), one older man and a younger couple. Total women 5. Total men 2. So far it's been a really good experience for me.

She looks so much more muscular and strong than in the early videos. It’s almost like Starting Strength works for women, too.

I programmed for my gf and found this to be true. At first I thought I'd gone too heavy too soon, but I had started at conservative weights and kept to the 5lbs (2-3lbs for the ohp) steps ups, but she ran into issues relatively quickly (around 12 sessions) and we decided to slow the progression, but stick to the original 3x5s. Now I see going for 5x3s or 3x3s would have been a better strategy

Great! And something I‘ve also experienced with female clients regarding strength adaptations🙌🏽

All clear on the programming difference for women, but what is the protocol for they/them?

Someone may need to critically think this with me.
If we define motor unit requirement as:
"Motor unit recruitment is the process by which different motor units are activated to produce a given level and type of muscle contraction."
and muscle contraction operates on the All-or-nothing principal, then why would there be a difference between sexes in contracting musculature? I would assume that other reasons (hormonal and physiological differences) would play a larger role in strength development.
Someone in the exercise physiology world please let me know what you think or correct my reasoning!

hell I don't know ....maybe there are more nuclei on average in a male fiber than a female fiber? maybe there are male female differences in end plate size and distribution? maybe the second derivative of hormonal release and signaling is greater in female than men? no idea, but I'm not an exercise physiologist guy.

Wait why is that though? Why are sets of 5 "easier" for women than men

Only when you need to scale back to 3 reps - it has to do with the ability to recruit muscle fibers (% wise) Men can recruit a higher percentage of fibers overall and therefore fatigue slower than women.

      I think the argument is....
Higher neuromuscular efficacy in males means males will recruit more motor units with respect to time.
This means men are training with higher 'intensity' (%1rm or RPE) per set - if you keep reps constant.
A 1RM is still a 1RM for both genders but as you get into higher reps "the chart" changes.
So females who train like males in regards to reps are leaving strength work on the table.
Note: eventually men will transition into doing some triples as well it just comes later in the programming.

Notice Rip refers to women as women (humans) and men as men(humans) while his sidekick refers to women as females (the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, a female animal or plant), in other words not human. Reducing women merely to their ability to procreate. I'm sure he isn't even aware that sexism is ingrained in his everyday speech. Not saying he's sexist, just saying his way of speaking is.
