I want to make sure you know about a guitar geek full-length film that's directed by Ethan Hawke. It was just released on August 17th, in theaters across Texas. I'm not sure of the trajectory of this movie but I just want it on your radar because it definitely piqued my interest and I think it will perk you guitar geek up as well.
This is a movie about Blaze Foley an Austin, Texas singer-songwriter who ran the same rounds as Townes Van Zandt, amongst many other Texas troubadour type songwriters. The movie is aptly titled, Blaze, and it just looks damn good. I would assume that this film will be coming to DVD or iTunes or something like that in the near future. So keep your eyes peeled for that.
I have to be totally honest here, I don't know very much about Blaze Foley, and I'm excited about this movie because I want to learn more about Blaze Foley, he seemed like quite the songwriter. While learning about this Hollywood style film I actually found another film on Blaze Foley and this one is a documentary.
This documentary about Blaze Foley is called "The Duck Tape Messiah." It was released in 2011 As I mentioned, I'm super pumped to learn more about Blaze Foley and I feel like this documentary will offer some great perspective on his music and his life
With those two resources and a solid recommendation from an Acoustic Tuesday viewer, I plan to learn a ton about Blaze Foley and I urge you to do the same. Let's all learn more about Blaze together... that's our guitar geek homework assignment.

Contrary to some first impressions, Blaze Foley wasn't just a backwoods musician with unsophisticated ways. He had a sharp wit and a keen sense of observation as well. Check out his song, "Oval Room." It's a little different from his heartfelt, sorrowful songs and shows a whole different side of his perception (whether or not you agree with his sentiments). Most of him seemed to be "heart," but "Oval Room" shows his wittier, perceptive, somewhat sarcastic, and politically informed and/or opinionated side. The part that made him an outlaw troubadour. Plus, it's a really catchy tune.

That's not the only one, Election Day and Officer Norris are also great tunes by Blaze that don't often get mentioned. I sing and play many of his tunes, Rainbows and Ridges, Picture Cards, Slow Boat To China. I just don't think Blaze ever wrote a bad song - they are all terrific little tunes. He was a master.

@@cicadagodking To me Springtime in Uganda was always the best demonstration of his witty lyricism, and you're right, he didn't write a bad song.

Oh, by the way, my favorite Blaze Foley album is Live at the Austin Outhouse. Amazing album!

You boys wanting somebody to tell you you're special? Must be because most people dont start off sentences with how old they are.

See you did it again lol. Its cringey and uber attention seeking. You don't see any comments on TH-cam that start off "I'm 41 but I love......". You know some other 15 year olds who liked good music? Literally every 15 year old in the 60s. I'm just saying its cringey to go around looking for people to tell you you're special. Just stop it. Music is universal and transcends age.

@@Canibal_Animal chill out buddy....let them be, what does matter...its understandable, i've seen this generation listening to today's music only but the good ol' songs dont exist to them....they are todays kids and are not used to real music and all the kids today mostly all just listen these electro beat things, so its great that they find themselves listening to the music these other kids dont..

Came to Blaze Foley via a song by Gurf Morlix called Music You Might Have Made (which in itself is an amazing song) and was deeply impressed by his songwriting. He one of many great songwriters in the troubadour tradition that pass by largely unnoticed in the maelstrom of drivel we are bombarded with by the mainstream music industry. There are literally dozens of them on every continent few of them break the sonic barriers installed by the 'business'. This stuff wont arrive by itself and you have spend time looking for it but by gosh it's worth the effort!

Blaze was a great songwriter! Can't wait to see this movie, I'll have to wait for the DVD though cause I don't think they will show this movie in European theaters.

The first place I heard of him was an episode of Mike Judge's Tales From The Tour Bus which was about him. You folks should check it out.

Have you heard of the documentary film about the life of Guy Clark? It is based on the book "Without Getting Killed Or Caught", and goes by the same title. There are also tidbits about his best friend Townes Van Zandt and others. Tamara Saviano wrote the book and also made the movie/documentary. Sissy Spacek narrates the documentary. It should be released in streaming and pay per view and itunes in 2021. Hope to see your review on this.

I just saw Duct Tape Messiah. This movie looks awesome! The girl playing his Sybil, his GF looked so much like the real Sybil. They recreated the Treehouse perfectly too.

The only place I could find this movie showing is at the Regal Arbor 8 in Austin. No showings here in north Texas, Houston or San Antonio. Bummer. It's not getting very good reviews, either.

Purchase it... Apparently it's not coming to the Midwest.
I bought it from TH-cam. Awesome. Clay pigeons, if I could only fly... listen to those and you probably just fell in love with Blaze Foley.... Also I think duct tape Messiah is on Amazon prime...

Why does no one tell the young people about how the DUI laws slowly choked off all the country honky tonks where people like Blaze once played.
