  • GERMANY: New escalation in the budget dispute over debt brake! Is the traffic light coalition breaking up?
In the negotiations on the 2025 budget, the FDP continues to insist on compliance with the debt brake. FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr stressed in the ZDF "Morgenmagazin" that the state must make do with the money that the people of Germany earn. He sees the traffic light coalition's talks on schedule, even if the budget does not necessarily have to be approved by the cabinet on July 3.
"The debt brake must be adhered to," said Dürr. "Every euro we take on in debt today will have to be paid for by future generations." Therefore, politicians, like people at home, must "set priorities." Dürr mentioned defense, internal security and the expansion of infrastructure, for example. More spending leeway can only be achieved through higher economic growth. Therefore, the government must ensure that companies can invest more easily.
When asked whether the 2025 budget could be passed by the cabinet on July 3 as planned in view of the difficult negotiations, Dürr said: "It's not about July 3 in principle, but about the cabinet drawing up a budget in July." The Bundestag will then deal with the proposal after the summer break in September. The aim is still to pass the budget at the end of November or beginning of December. "We are on schedule for that."
The portal The Pioneer reported, citing government circles, that a cabinet decision on July 3 was "now unlikely." Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) expressed confidence in an ARD summer interview on Sunday "that we will get the budget underway in July" - without explicitly mentioning July 3.
For months, there has been a dispute within the federal government over the budget for the coming year, in view of tight budgets and a weak economy. In addition to the debt brake, the level of social benefits, infrastructure investments and spending on defense and development projects are also controversial. Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) is calling for significant cuts in the budgets of several ministries, particularly in social spending.
