Very debatable question. I took lessons until about Grade 5 then learned on my own. It depends on what you want to do. There is no substitute then having a teacher next to you giving tips and guidance. But if you want to try self learning, Alfred makes self learning books for adults. You can use this as a guage to how well you pick up. If you have difficulty then finding a teacher would be the next step. Good luck!
