The orange marker is used by the Head Linesman to indicate where the field line crosses the line to gain chain. He has to move the marker every time the chains are set on a new first down. When the ball is downed close to a first down the White Hat Ref will call for the chains to come out on to the field to measure where the ball is. The orange marker will be used to adjust the chains to the correct spot on the field.
