    Another great project Ralph, those two units look fantastic, look forward to following this along, and especially you trying out the scenario from the BP rule book. As an aside, as a small boy I lived in a house in Alma Terrace, it wasn't too far from the Inkerman Tavern.

      There's lots of them about - my parents lived for a short time in a Bulganak Road which was the river just north of the Alma where an exchange took place. Luckily for the Light Brigade they were forbidden from pursuing the enemy as they would have run into the main body of the Russian army and they would have been annihilated before the famous charge at Balaclava ever happened.

    Love the paint job, so glad you choose the Crimean, looking forward to some very informative videos, thanks for sharing.

      Thanks Garry. I've had an interest in this period for a long time, hence the unpainted figures sitting in my lead mountain. I actually made an abortive start on 20mm some time back but much prefer these 18mm figures.

    Not a period we play, but very tempting...splendid British lines!

      It's an interesting period - well worth investigating.

    Nice chat the models look nice, evem though they lack those shoulder bits

    • @RalphAstley
      @RalphAstley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Nick. I can live without the shoulder panels in this scale. Anyway I don't have the skill or the patience to model them myself. As the army grows defects like that will be less obvious as the figures will get lost in the crowd. Next up are some guard regiments but it may take me a while so I will probably do some videos on the historical background.

    Great job on those figures. I wouldn’t have bothered with the thin red line on the trousers! As for the epaulettes, I wouldn’t have noticed had you not mentioned it. Those crests on the shoulders were only worn by flank companies during the Napoleonic period. I have no idea if they were still restricted to flank companies in the 1850s.

      Thanks Sam. Just been looking again at uniform details as it's been a while since this video. Much had changed since the Napoleonic period - by this time all battalion companies had a shoulder strap of the regimental colour. In flank companies this terminated in a red wing barred with white tape, in centre companies with a white crescent. So essentially all figures should be portrayed with some kind of shoulder decoration, but neither is identical to the swallow's nest arrangement of flank companies in the Napoleonic period. At this scale my tired eyes can't really pick out this fine detail however!

      @@RalphAstley haha! Yep I have the same malfunction with my eyes. Can’t understand it, I used to see the button arrangements on 2mm figures clearly. Ultimately it’s largely irrelevant. My figures get held up to the light for 10 minutes after I finish painting them. After that they’re rarely closer than arm’s reach, so the 2’ rule should be applied rigidly. Difficult to break the habit of a lifetime though. They’re still some great looking figures.

      Cheers Gavin - I think these are relatives of AB Napoleonics. Shame about that hair stuck to the shako but I have fixed that now.

      Thanks Peter - after our ACW game I thought I would put my hand to 15mm painting again.

      Well if the time comes that you need an opponent to play the opposing force then just let me know and I'll be happy to step in :)

      That time will certainly come but I have to paint the armies first. You'll be the first to know. In the meantime we must play another game of Congo soon.

      Ralph Astley i watch charge of the light brigade regularly. Its a period i find intriguing and never considered wargaming it. Maybe in the future, I like switching periods. For years I was in to WW2, europe, n africa and far east. Then started ww1 but left that hanging a bit..i then got bitten by the old napoleonic bug again after watching old episodes of Callan, so from july to december last year, I painted up 2 reasonably sized french and british armies from scratch along with a basic wargames table...from jan 1 to now, i have worked exclusively on ECW and have managed to paint again 2 armies approx 150 figures inclusive, with another 50 in progress. I am aiming for 2 forces in depth after which, I will consider another period or maybe back to napoleonics. All good fun...good to chat on the subject, all the best to you!

      I'm the same - I tend to flit from one period to another and as I paint slowly I rarely finish projects. However as I age, and because I never get rid of figures, I find I come back to things many years later. I presume you mean the 1960's version of Charge of the Light Brigade with David Hemmings and not the 1930's version with Errol Flynn? I watch it a lot as well and have always felt it to be historically 'accurate' but having read a lot more around the subject recently I realise it has distorted a great deal. I'm planning to do a video on the inaccuracies in the film and the way this has influenced our perspective of the Crimean War, but not in the near future.

      Ralph Astley yes that film, great film, but yes, as a student of military history, the film is not faithful yo historical fact....good never the less! Another favourite of mine is Gordon of Khartoum and storm over the nile. In fact i like the historical and colonial movies as a preference...northwest frontier, 55 days in peking etc etc all great stuff! I look forward to your future video! Be good to do one on zulu, so much artistic license in that, perhaps best leave it alone! Good night to you, very good to chat!

      I do discuss the film 'Zulu' a little in my video "The Defenders of Rorke's Drift" and think you might find that interesting.

    I would love to see again another Medieval or Dark ages battle Report as you did a while ago using Sword and Spear rules. But maybe with another set of Rules this time.

      I do have something in mind along those lines but time is a bit scarce at the moment.

    Nice figures, I love 15 mm but really lack scenery for it. have a bunch of Napolionics to paint. Including the Waterloo starter. They are 28mm but I only really plan to build 1 medium force of French and British so I can again mostly play solo. I do like the look of black powder a lot though. I do not really have the room for whole multiple armies with multiple generals and 20 or 30 regiments of infantry etc. But maybe more like a couple of 2or 3 regiments of infantry with cavalry and a cannon mixed in. It probably won't be hardcore historic but more for enjoyment of the game.

    • @RalphAstley
      @RalphAstley  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I keep painting lots of 28mm figures for Blackpowder only to realise that the scenarios in the book require lots of figures and a large table surface that I don't have room for. Recently I have noticed some You Tubers seem to play with half unit sizes on smaller tables - so that might be a solution, especially whilst you are building up your forces.

    Hi Ralph, do you find 18mm as easy to paint as 28mm models?

    • @RalphAstley
      @RalphAstley  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all. I never attempt to paint detail that I can't see on the figure and in this scale some detail is left off - for instance lace on the drummer's sleeve. Therefore I end up not putting this type of thing in rather than trying to free hand it. Also other things like eyes on faces that I can do in 28mm but fail miserable in 15mm and 18mm so I just apply a wash. I'm in awe of the painting skills of the likes of Paul Alba and Gavin Booth who both do excellent work in 18mm.

    Hey Ralph. Lovely painted figs mate. Got some in a box to do myself - just need to retire to have the time to paint them.
    I believe Mike Broadbent is the sculptor of these wonderful figs. Check out eurekamin.com.au/supplement31.pdf
    Anthony Barton (AB) is the scupltor for AB minis.
    Both extremely talented fellows/artists.
    cheers

      I had it wrong then as I always thought the sculptor was the same. Despite being retired myself I have more figures than I will ever have time to paint, and still keep purchasing more.
