      Yes, this series is a master class in acting. Not played for broad laughs, but it showed subtle, gentle humour. Most of the time.

    Back in the early 90’s when my kids and nephews were little, my son announced to all of us at the thanksgiving day dinner table , that his little cousin said the F word. So I said to my son, what F word did he say ? And everyone went silent and holding their breath waiting for my kid to say the F word. He said , Justin said FART ! 😮😅😂

    This "A Word A Day" episode reminded me of something my son did when he was about 3 years old ... Like most kids, my son had trouble with a few particular words, like the word clock. One afternoon, the two of us were shopping for a clock, when the clerk asked if she could help; just then, my son said, "Wow Daddy, look at all the *cocks!"* 😮 Thankfully, the clerk had a sense of humor and just laughed.

      My 3 year old nephew did the same thing. Only he pointed to a grandfather clock and said “that’s a really big cock “.
      We all laughed. 😂

    Really sophisticated comedy AND lesson from 1961.
    I think we've lost some ground since then. Gained a lot too. But lost a certain respectfulness.

      Weird. All the kids in my neighborhood played before school, both in our yard, and then again on the playground at school. But that was back in the 1950s and 60s. Even my son and his classmates were strongly encouraged to play before school out on the playground; it was a great way to release some of their early morning energy (1980s).

      isn't the first time in the show that we learn this boy has some problem making him develope certain skills later than others... nowadays there can be diagnosys and proper care to help him be able to read more easily etc - but back then children with this sort of problem (dyslexia or whatever) just didn't get the hep they need. it's kinda tragic, really. just to think how many people were humiliated and ashamed for no good reason.

    • @jb6712
      @jb6712 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, but it appears the writers didn't think that logically. It was a requirement, back in 1958 when I began kindergarten, that each of us had to be able to read at least the first five of the then-popular children's' book series, "Dick and Jane."
      My son had to be able to read at a certain level when he began kindergarten in 1981, as did my sister's three kids when they started school in the late 1980s.
      Seems as if now the kids don't have to even know how to tie their shoes before going to school (it was a mandatory requirement for kids in my era, as well as my son's, along with being 100% potty trained, vaccinated, hearing tested, eyes tested, and have a physical. Schools in my home state were very strict about children's health back then).

      So much presentism in the comments! I would have thought this show being in black and white would have clued you in to this being filmed at a totally different time, when kids weren't glued to devices and reading at a much younger age.

      When I began kindergarten (1963), nursery school was not pre-school. There was no presumption that any child knew anything. Actually, I went into school a year early, and so went through special testing. I remember it, I was asked to string differently shaped wooden beads on a string.
      I assume I knew the alphabet, and how to count to whatever number. But I definitely could not read language. Although I was reading music by then. I remember the reading books in first grade-- I actually have copies of them-- which was when we learned to read. The school district was very highly regarded, and it didn't seem to hurt anyone to wait to learn to read. A generation prior, they didn't even have kindergarten.

    Man, how slow was the education in that so-called school? My parents taught me to read when I was four, and by the time I started kindergarten a year later, ALL of my classmates and I were reading the "Dick and Jane" books on the first day of school. This show was set only four years after I started kindergarten; must have been a very low curriculum school district (I know it's nothing but very poor scripting on the part of the writers....).

      Where did you go to kindergarten? I was born in 1965. Children were not required to go to kindergarten when I went in 1970. We learned our ABC’s, counting to 10 and 20. We would color, sing song, and play. We didn’t learn to read until first grade. I remember the first book I ever read to my Dad and Mom. It was The Cat In The Hat!
