I always thought that "The fog's getting thicker... and Leon's getting larger" was just a random silly comment. But just recently I was told that Leon's was a chain of furniture stores on the west coast, and when they added new stores in the '70s, their ads said "Leon's is getting larger."

The announcers arguing at the start of the movie were a real married couple that worked as announcers at LAX.
You've got to watch this through the ending credits, the man in the cab pops up and says, "I'll give him another 20 minutes". lol
The guy in the cab was Howard Jarvis, head of a taxpayer group demanding California be fiscally responsible. The joke was that he was just letting the fare run up, not being very fiscally responsible. Funny in 1980.
Saw him at the airport yesterday ..... cab had a little bit of rust on it.

Or the complete mission details when Ellen asks Ted about the following day. "When will you be back?" "I can't tell you it's classified." My dad (who worked on mission details like this in Vietnam) howled.
I knew there were drinks named that, but I thought maybe there might actually be places with those same names. I just never bothered questioning it.
It's a movie you need to watch multiple times to get all the gags and still miss some.
It's still hillarious no mater how many times you watch it.
The emotional support vulture was way ahead of it's time.
The gag of the airplane sounds being from a propeller plane and not a jet plane is Epic!

Yes, rewatching this film is absolutely worthwhile. Like you mentioned, there is so much happening almost non-stop that you miss things. And some of the humor can be pretty subtle so you tend to not notice it the first few times.
I love that the old woman who translates for the jive talking passengers was played by Barbara Billingsly, better known as June Cleaver, the mother of Beaver on the late '50's TV classic Leave It To Beaver.
If you watch, she did it so well. She was acting as if she was translating from one language to another. She even 'points to the words' as she is trying to translate it. It was brilliantly done on her part.
She was the mom in "Leave it to Beaver".
They originally tried to cast Harriet Nelson, of "Ozzie and Harriet" another late 50s television show, but she turned the role down because of the language and raunchy humor, and then kicked herself ever after for that decision.
This scene will always be funny.
I don't think I'll ever get over the Beaver's mom talk'n jive no matter how many times I see it.
Young Frankenstien and Blazing Saddles are musts.
When Captain Over is standing by the magazine rack, did you notice that the label on the section next to him reads Whacking Materials? All the magazines are adult themed. Every time I watch this movie I find details hidden in it.
Very few reactors catch that.

I’m happy you pointed that out because as many times as I’ve seen this movie both on my own and with reactors, I only just noticed that for the first time on this watchthrough
It’s funny how that a lot of young Americans don’t get this movie. The sarcasm goes over their heads.
But I have seen time and time again young foreigners watch this movie and laugh hysterically. They get the jokes, even though some of them are too old for them to understand since they do reference American pop culture from over 40 years ago.
I’ve been watching this movie since I was a child and I still see things I’ve never seen before every time I watch it. A+

@@Fast_Eddy_Magic I have watched several reactions and a lot of them do not even notice that.
Some of my favorite, more subtle gags are:
1) There are dozens of jars of mayonnaise behind the doctor at the Mayo Clinic, which is a real and prestigious hospital. Somehow, I must have seen this film at least a dozen times before I finally noticed this gag, which isn't all that subtle.
2) It does not make sense that a film made in 1980 has a younger character who flew in World War 2, which ended in 1945. This storyline comes from the melodrama "Zero Hour!" which inspired this spoof. It did make sense in that 1957 film.
3) The name of Rex Kramer's seemingly friendly but actually vicious dog is "Shep," which is the name of the dog in at least one of the "Lassie" films about a boy and his canine best friend.
4) During the doctor's pep talk to Ted, he mentions a character named George Zipp. This is a reference to George Gipp (1895-1920). He played American football for the famous team of the University of Notre Dame. Gipp died from infections which would likely be cured with today's medicine. In the Hollywood, probably fictional, version of him on his deathbed, he asked the coach that one day in the future, when victory seemed unlikely, the team should find a way to "win just one for the Gipper." When the doctor in this film says, "win one for the Zipper," the music playing is the "fight song" for the University of Notre Dame "Fighting Irish" football team.
5) There is a scene where the chief in the control tower asks for the compass bearing of the plane. The radar operator is playing an Atari basketball game instead, and he gives the time remaining in the game as the compass bearing.
6) Every time the jet aircraft is shown flying, you can hear the sound of propeller engines.
For as many times as I’ve seen this beloved film I’ve learned about some of the references that I either didn’t catch or didn’t know at all. Shirley I should thank you for that. LOL
One of my favourites is when Kramer goes to adjust his tie at home in front of the mirror and we see the dog attack behind him. The scene cuts to the dog for a moment and then back to Kramer to the same POV as before, but it's the Kramer in the mirror that walks out. Took me years before I noticed that edit in the scene.
The Gipper movie is Knute Rockne, All American (1940). The beach scene is a supposedly unintended parallel to the one in From Here to Eternity.

@@JPMadden It sure does, but I read where they claimed to have not seen that film. But it is a trope too, so it would be even funnier if they really hadn’t.
One thing to remember about any Zucker/Abrams/Zucker movies is that the jokes continue in the written credits.
A couple of fun tidbits about the movie.
1. When Kareem grabs “Joey”, the size difference between Kareem and the kid meant he pulled the kid off his feet and literally into his lap. Obviously, this was a blooper and not in the actual movie.
And
2. The automatic pilot is actually credited as “Otto” in the credits. As “Otto” sounds almost identical to “auto”
This was made during the era of dramatic disaster/catastophe movies (ex. Airport, Airport 1975, Posiedon Adventure, Earthquake, The Towering Informo) of the 1970s and this movie was such a contrast to themt so it made it even funnier. Also, many of the main characters were actors who were known for their serious roles and this movie was such a departure for many of them. That added to the absurdity of the film and made it even more enjoyable. A great funny movie and it was a pleasure seeing it again through your eyes. BTW, don’t call me Sherly.
Leslie Nielsen was considered a straight actor until he did this film. It was his deadpan delivery of the comic bits that led to his involvement with his many comic projecrs like the Naked Gun film series.

Every time you asked "why" I wanted to explain the references and inside jokes, lol. There are so many levels and layers of humor in this film. That's what makes it so great!
No, every time he asked why, there is only one answer....because its a joke. That's it. No deep dive into references needed. They did it because it was funny.
This is essentially a remake of an old schlocky 50s disaster melodrama. The producers bought the rights to “Zero Hour!” so they could lift whole sections from the script to use with nearly no changes.
Another fun properly weird movie is UHF starring Weird Al Yankovic. There are many dated references to entertainment and particularly American television culture around 1989.
There are TH-cam videos where people did scene comparisons between Ariplaine! and Zero Hour! and many of them are almost the same (with different actors of course)
The entire movie is an endless spoof of other movies, tv shows, commercials, and cultural references of the 70s.
UHF is one of my faves!

The 4 older actors were all serious dramatic leads in the past, younger people would not understand why them delivering these crazy lines is so funny.
“Top Secret” next!!! It’s as much visual and physical humor as “Airplane!” is dad jokes.
Julie Hagerty's been in several hilarious classic comedies. Always the same character: Soft-spoken, delicate, sweet-natured lady who calmly accepts absolute madness all around her.

This movie gave some of the older more serious established actors the chance to be seen in a different light…. And genre…. Peter Graves ( Captain Over) …. Original Mission Impossible TV series….Lloyd Bridges ( Seahunt)…. Robert Stack…. Original Untouchables TV series…. And of course Leslie Nielsen.
SO many people don't see all the 70s personalites like Jimmy JJ Walker as the mechanic checking the oil on the plane

At 4:17 the guy with the flashlights who is "directing" the plane is Jerry Zucker with his brother David, the movie's "directors". Another brilliant inside joke.
They say this movie is the reason the FAA has a rule that the pilot and co-pilot are not allowed to eat the same meal... 😏
From what I've heard that was already a rule, the movie just ignored it as it wouldn't work otherwise.

When this movie came out the nuts in the airports asking for money was a real problem. So when the nuts get beaten up the audiences didn't laugh, we cheered and applauded
Keep in mind that in 1980, there were no real age restrictions on movies. In North America, it was rated PG. I first saw it in theatre at 12 years old.

This movie is what gave me my love for sarcastic humor and what made me such a smartass. It needs rewatching a few times to catch everything. I am so glad it was made back then because it never would've been made today.

Lorna Patterson (Randi, the singing stewardess) was a childhood neighbor of mine... My oldest sister's age, so naturally I had a crush on her 😀
Definitely crushworthy! A lot of attention is given to the other actors in the film, but she has some pretty memorable bits too.
I remember Lorna from a TV sitcom called "The Goodtime Girls" with Annie Potts ("Young Sheldon," "Ghostbusters," "Designing Women").

There is a sequel to this. Airplane 2. It has the same type of jokes coming at you a mile a minute.

It amazes me how many younger people enjoy watching this movie without the context of the 70s disaster movies this movie references.
Leslie Nielsen had been a well known dramatic actor for decades - in the fifties, he starred in Forbidden Planet, which greatly influenced Star Trek. Airplane was his first comic role, at least for this kind of wacky comedy, and the rest of his career consisted of similar roles. The movie parodies Love in the Afternoon (the girl running alongside the plane, instead of a train, waving goodbye to her boyfriend), From Here to Eternity (the wave washing over the two lovers on the beach, only this time with kelp), and Knute Rockne, All American (the story about the dying words of George Zip, instead of George Gip - that's why the Notre Dame fight song plays at the end of the scene). "He never has a second cup of coffee at home" spoofs a coffee commercial that had been running constantly for several years at the time, until everyone knew it by heart and was sick of it. The man waiting in the taxi is Howard Jarvis, then a famous (not to say notorious) California politician.
Actually (sorry), it wasn't Leslie Nielsen's first comedic role, just his first big one. He was on an episode of M*A*S*H; he played a general that they tried to drive crazy to keep him from killing so many soldiers.
And the lady who was wondering why her husband never has a 2nd cup of coffee at home, was the actress from the actual commercial.

The entire movie uses a propeller plane sound effect for a jet engine plane. Always makes me smile as the main gags play over the top.
The movie company wouldn't allow then to use a prop airplane so they did the next best thing as a joke.

The young boy offering the girl some coffee had me nearly peeing my pants. Hysterical.
They’re punching and beating up the guys at the airport simply because they’re annoying. Back in the day, at the airport, it was heavy solicitation and people constantly approaching you to join a cause or donate to something, etc.
When you asked why he punched the one guy, I was thinking doesn't everyone wish they could have done that?
The nun singing "sock it to me" is funny, and the reason the black guy is throwing up, is because it's a version of "RESPECT" by the queen of soul Aretha Franklin.
She's doing it so WHITELY.
This sounds crazy, but there have been more foreigners recognizing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar than there have been Americans when they react to this movie
Just about everyone misses the after credit scene
I almost had to force my friend to wait for that part when we watched it in the theater.
One thing a lot of people miss is that the jet plane is giving a propeller plane noise.

This was hands down the funniest movies I've ever seen. Im still seeing references and details i didn't catch the first time i watched it. I wish Hollywood was still this creative and clever today.

During the 70's, there was a huge overflow of disaster films. Airport had some 5 sequels alone. The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno were two big movies of the time. This movie was a parody of those movies.
And is generally credited with ending the genre.

There's lots of pop culture references in this movie that you likely missed, but it's still funny. So glad to see someone "get" all the stupid puns, etc. There was one pair of reactors a while back who watched this and they just didn't get most of it. It was disheartening to see someone not even notice "and don't call me Shirley."

The 'staying alive' scene is still one of my favourites, me and my mate kept rewinding the bit where Ted jumps back on the dancefloor and you hear a springboard sound... we creased up keep repeating it and we wore the VHS tape out at that bit!
To this day is still say "What a pisser!" pretty much everyday, and i annoy my friends all the time saying "And dont call me Shirley!". Another line i love (and have been known to work into sentences) is "Nervous?", "Yes", First time?" "No, ive been nervous lots of times!"
Its great watching a fellow Brit doing reactions, I do comedy reactions myself and i don't see too many Brits on TH-cam doing this stuff! I also love that you watch classic movies with your son. My son is currently 7 and i hope to follow in your footsteps and introduce him to classic movies on my channel when hes a bit older.
Top Secret is another classic, so similar to Airplane, oh and ofcourse you must watch Airplane 2... i still get some of the jokes from the two movies mixed up!

Robert Hays said since making this movie: A) He learned to fly a plane and B) When he flies commercial as a passenger he NEVER orders fish for dinner!
The flight attendant was singing a song about the River Jordan to the young girl. The river Jordan is symbolism for death. Crossing the river Jordan is crossing from life to death. Not exactly inappropriate song for a very sick girl.

This is one of my Top 5 favorite movies of all time. I love it when reactors enjoy it as much as I do. You definitely need to watch it again. I think I watched it 3 times before I stopped noticing jokes I had missed.
Captain Over and Leslie Neilson were known for dramatic roles so for fans of them it made this even funnier

You need to watch several times to catch every joke. For example, the plane is a jet airliner, but through the entire movie, it makes propeller noises.

29:34 - was on flying this week and when the safety instruction got to this part (over 4 flights) - I flashed to this in my head and chuckled.
Saw this at the theater when it came out and I couldn't breathe at times from laughing. If you like this movie, may i suggest the 1985 Comedy, CLUE. Hilarious and great cast. Tim Curry as the butler, well, you don't get any better than that!
The film is a parody of every disaster and war film from the 70's and before. You may not get all the jokes because much of the film has gags about 60's American pop culture, which includes TV commercials, old TV shows and other events.
The big reason the film is hilarious is the director cast mostly classically trained stage , film and television actors who don't typically do comedy. Robert Stack was popular in the 1960's TV drama "The Untouchables, " Lloyd Bridges (father of beau and Jeff Bridges)starred in TV adventure drama "Seahunt," Peter Graves starred in the original "Mission Impossible," Leslie Nielsen starred in "The Bold Ones", "The FBI," "The Poseiden Adventure," and other film/TV roles. Barbara Billingsley was the mother in the 1950's-1960's "Leave It to Beaver." Other notable cast members are James Hong, and Ann Nelson.
The wife watching her husband requesting a second cup of coffee is a parody of a 1960's Yuban Coffee commercial. The commercial is available to view on TH-cam.
There are references to films such as "Airport, " "The Poseiden Adventure, " "From Here to Eternity, " "Zero Hour," "Pride of the Yankees, " and several more..
22:45 the lance hitting the wall is a call back to the car being chased by Indians on the drive to the airport.
The Opening Scene Is Spoofing Jaws! That’s Why It Had That Jaws Theme Music And A Fin Above The Clouds And Flying Up To Attack! The Other Scene In That Seedy Bar And Him Putting His Arm In The Air That’s Parodies John Travolta’s Film From The 70’s Called Saturday Night Fever!

An hour & 27-minute movie "in this day & age" is the equivalent of a Video Short!
This movie is so funny! I watched a few years ago, I think during the lockdown or a little before. Brilliant, silly, hilarious. The painting was a realistic painting, that's why he moves for real hahaahhhaha and the doctor was not doing a birth, it was a gynecological exam! 😆 I love those innocent jokes, that's why my favorites tv shows lately are the light ones with humor.
80s good time for movies
Funny how some now see him as a stalker. Wasn't even on the radar as that back then. It was considered as not giving up. Many relationships had stories where he pursued her and they went on to long lives together. People also knew the line between healthy pursuit and unhealthy obsession.
Although there was a movie made in 1956 called “Julie“ that depicted an airline stewardess being stalked by her psychotic ex-husband. That was actually the movie that gave my parents the idea for my name, lol.
@@itsjuliescottyay Oh yes there were psychos. I meant people wouldn't tend to think of it in this movie when watching. That's become a modern thing that any pursuit could be construed as stalking. Reading it, my wording wasn't the best.
I also think that male family members were more likely to 'send a message' to a guy who was crossing a line back in the day. Can't do that now. That had more weight than a piece of paper from a judge.
The obvious Leslie Nielsen movies are Naked Gun & it’s sequels … but you might enjoy the tv series they are based on first … the six episodes of Police Squad … same writers and humor style.
Besides the post credit scene, there are lots material added to the end credits.
If you like this type of humor, you'll love Top Secret!, Loaded Weapon, Mafia!, Hot Shots and Hot Shots Part Deux, as well as the Scary Movie series.
Ted could have never fought in WW2 with propellered planes. The actor was born in 1947.

This is a movie you have to watch several times. You missed a lot of jokes. I still laugh when I watch this movie and I saw it when it first came out.
There are a lot of subtle jokes. In the hospital scene, there is an announcement over the hospital's PA system. It is for the doctor that is in the plane.
The background noise of the plane is the sound of a propeller plane, but they are in a jet.
You really have to watch everything for the visual humor, and listen to everything for the audio humor.
Watch it again, you won't be disappointed.
An excellent, serious drama that Leslie Nielson is in, though not the star, is The Poseidon Adventure (1972) with a cast of '70s "all-stars" and a gripping narrative. Please react, thanks.
there so many movies of that genre, the sequel of course Airplane 2 in space, the naked gun trilogy, austin power trilogie, hotshots 1 and 2, all fun movies to see
I'm so fascinated that so many people watch this film and ask, "Why is he/she doing/saying that thing?" The answer is invariably "because it's funny." I think the film tells you pretty clearly with the Jaws opening that the whole movie is just absurd, but people seem to constantly want something deeper. It's like analyzing a fart. Just laugh, and let it go.

When you rewatch this movie…it wasn’t over….you missed the last gag..the woman putting on makeup, she was the Abrams mother
