  • Growing currants and gooseberries doesn't have to be hard. They're simple to establish, actually, and given a little patience they will provide bountiful harvests within just three years after being planted.
Currants and gooseberries both belong to the "Ribes" genus, and as such they can be cared for and will behave quite similarly.

I will be planting 3 different gooseberries, red, black, white and pink champagne currants, and a jostaberry this year, most of them bare roots. I am looking forward to tasting them all in three years or so! 😂

Thank you very much for the inspiration! I had planted a couple of red currants and a couple of gooseberries last fall and I am happy to confirm that at least one of each kind have survived Maine winter! Very excited to see them grow! 😁👍🏻

2022, let's get some follow up bud. Planted my first 6 currants last year. Cloned those from the first year pruning. Just ordered 10 more with more variety. Will clone all of those at the end of the year. Hope your plants are doing good.

Hi. This video is great information. Thank you. I planted my first black currant bush. Without a plan at the time. I just order 2 goose berries and 2 red currant bushes. I would like to move the bush to a new location. Is it ok to move it?

Few yr's back my wife's mom got us a black berry bush. Turns out the bush is a vine (I didn't know lol) Thing likes to dig in after about 4-5 ft. Last fall I went enough and started chopping new growth. This yr I have hundreds of flower buds. The point? Patience, and read. Thanks for all the info over the years bud. Lederhosen overalls and a new hat...styling my friend.

HA! I'm waiting for my blackberry canes to come still, but yeah, they grow and spread. Enjoy that crop though - they're delicious fresh and they cost way too much in the grocery store.
Glad you're digging the outfit :)

My currents, from a friend, are on their 2nd year. They have toppled over and the branches are running along the ground. I noticed with your Goose Berries, that you have a fence like thing around it and it is more bush-like. Could you talk a little about maintaining an existing plant so that it does not creep along the ground. I live in Alaska.

Hi Barb. I can say that I generally find that most plants that get trellised and pruned properly are better producers. Once the gooseberry was large enough that it started splaying out and down I opted to pound in spikes and wrap the perimeter branches to have the bush form an inverted cone shape - this is also what I will do with the currant. I think this helps with airflow (to reduce mildew diseases) and it promotes pollination by opening up the plant for the bees. Happy growing!

In this video, which is awesome by the way, there was a moment where it showed you had built and were building raised beds. Think you would be willing to give the dimensions and the wood type & size and nail type and size? And the size of the raised bed that they come together to make. Oh! And the names of the tools needed to build them.

Thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed! Here's my video from when I built the raised beds: th-cam.com/video/_lNrtyfl5wY/w-d-xo.html. It's all dimensional lumber. You'll need a saw, a drill, and some screws. Happy gardening :)

Maybe somewhere where a small/medium tree blocks mid day sun, so it gets morning and afternoon sun and a trickling of light through the tree mid day

think you may have just got a bad blueberry man, they grow in all sorts of soils here.
either that or the weather, they kinda like some cover from what I've seen, maybe try over by the fence.
and currants have a long history in europe, they were illegal in america for years because non-resistant varieties can spread white pine blister rust.

How to germinate blackcurrant from seeds? I got some seeds in the mail, did not want to waste them by doing the wrong procedure.

What was wrong with the first video? I have murdered a lot of blueberry bushes. Haven't tried currants or gooseberries yet.

If you are too impatient to watch a short video, then you lack the patience to wait years for a perennial to mature.
