    I want to mention is that these varieties vary widely. My Hinnomaki Red is far superior to Trixia in terms of flavor and yes.. it does turn red as well.

      Pretty sure you're referring to the 'tixia' cultivar: www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/438/438-107/438-107.html

    Yes! One of my favorite fruits. We've got a bit of our 'black velvet' gooseberries fruiting this year and a few on our 'jeane'. While I do like sweet gooseberries, I adore the tart ones (I can always pick the berries a bit early if I want a variety to be a little tarter). I haven't tried fresh jostaberries yet, but I have three of those bushes too (plus some redcurrants). The plants all grow really well here. While they do tolerate a bit of shade, I think they do better with more sun (the plants are substantially more vigorous). Some of the gooseberry plants can be viciously thorny (use care when picking), but I'm excited to try Poorman and Pixwell varieties at some point. They're vigorous but with supposedly much less thorns.

    Here in Australia the gooseberry used to be more commonly grown but has slipped in popularity of recent years and has become a bit old fashioned. Gooseberries like a cold climate. Our property is in the New England Tablelands of northern New South Wales at an altitude of 1,050 metres (3,455 feet) above sea level with cold winters, so gooseberries do well here. Not commonly eaten raw, gooseberries are very nice stewed and sweetened - as one might do with apple for example - and used as a pie filling or just served as stewed fruit with cream. Very tasty.

    If I remember right, they were outlawed and destroyed whenever found back during the 1800's and earlier 1900's. They harbor some kind of mold or disease that also kills pine trees so they were targeted for eradication.

    I have a white currant that I planted in a 20-gallon planter. It's just starting to set some flowers. It's first year, so I'm not expecting much, but I hope they'll be a few that'll ripen in time.

    The gooseberry is my most reliable fruit for me too. You forgot to mention how easily they propagate by layering and cuttings. My two bushes have turned into 12 in just the three years I’ve had them. Thanks for the video! I wish more people grew them.

    I'M soo happy your a fan of them Ross, as you said there totally underrated. I grow different ones but by far my favourite is our old classic yellow ones which are soo sweet, actually sweeter than our grapes. Great video Ross.

      Know the variety name? I'm gonna try and find a hinnomaki yellow and take out this Trixia.

      @@RossRaddi I have no idea what variety it is, just that it is a real old one with such great flavour. I have red Gooseberries but they don't hold a candlestick to the yellow.

    I have a very large gooseberry plant and every year it produces tons of blossoms and fruit. Unfortunately, the fruit falls off. What do I need to do to obtain mature fruit?

    Muscadine grape in Pennsylvania? What variety? I have one in my green house that survived the winter. I live in north central Pennsylvania.

    Do gooseberries and currants have seeds? If so, how big are they?

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, according to Penn State Extension there was a federal ban that was rescinded in 1966, so now it's up to states to form their own laws. PA has a restriction on the books but it's not enforced: extension.psu.edu/home-fruit-plantings-gooseberries-and-currants#:~:text=Legal%20Restrictions&text=In%201933%2C%20Pennsylvania%20passed%20a,less-susceptible%20types%20of%20Ribes

      Types of Ribes are illegal to grow in specific states. I had heard that it's a nonissue now.

      There is a desease called white pine blister that gooseberries can transfer to the pine tree , states with lumber industry prevent the planting of gooseberries to some extent.
