    To everyone who wanted to know what documentary he was speaking about, I finally figured it out. It's on the TV program called Modern Marvels and the episode was Truck Stops (Season 13 Episode 19) - It was driving me crazy trying to find it! hehe Cheers! :) And of course, thank you Squirrel for doing what you - I love your videos dearly. Always interesting and fun to watch. :)

    In all actuality, the freight rates in the game are ridiculously high. Usually dry van freight goes for around $1.50 a mile. Chemicals can go for up to $5.00 a mile. Professional drivers would kill for $20.00 a mile freight rates.

      One could say then that with the scaling system the game uses, and the accelerated time, the amounts are about right. :D

      @jwenting 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Will Baack that's why they're not dumpsters... The ones he showed are skips, dumpsters are other things entirely. Skips are open topped small containers, typically used to haul off construction waste (concrete, wood, etc.). Dumpsters are usually covered, wheeled, and can be emptied into dump trucks.

    hi squirrel, The T/A back in the day was called Truckstops of America, they are now Travel Centers of America, they also own the Petro Travel Centers and are one of the 3 major chains here in the US. the other 2 are Pilot Flying Travel Center and Loves Travel Centers. As a driver of over 30 years over the road, I'm really enjoying your series and if you have any questions about driving IRL, don't be afraid to ask and I will try to answer.

    T/A's are among my favorite spots to stop in a passenger car because you know they're clean and generally fuel is more affordable. Loves is also another good one, it's just like a T/A.

  • @qv43v
    @qv43v 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Paul: Yes, it is called the Iowa 80 (Interstate 80) Truckstop. As an Iowan, passed it many a time, and also stopped in a few times. It is a pretty cool place even if you are not a trucker, and it is a welcome site if you have been traveling a long time regardless of vehicle.
    I figured SCS has to put Iowa in just because of that. The cool thing about the US is that you can take I-80 there in Cali, all the way to the East Coast. So if they ever get to all of the states, you can start in California, go through Iowa all the way to the East Coast without ever changing interstates.

    TcAs(Travel Centers of America) is the largest travel center company, after acquiring Petro travel centers, in the US, but Pilot, Love's, Flying J, state government run travel centers ( on toll roads), and plenty of small independents stops are also common in the US.

  • @tigerhawk84

    If you are a member at the various truckstops you can give them your mobile # and they will actually text you when your shower is ready, so you can just sit in your sleeper and watch TV or clean up or do whatever while you wait so you don't have to waste time sitting in the stop doing nothing while you wait, you can actually get stuff done. You do want to be a member, because as you use the facilities over time, mainly fuel but some other stuff as well, you can earn yourself some free food or multiple free showers, etc. You're going to use them anyways while you work so you may as well get free benefits. Also the "future tech" for weigh stations is already in use. The cameras see your truck # in the pre-weigh on the highway and if you are under the quick scan weight limit, a bypass signal can be sent to your qualcomm(electronic logging device) and it beeps to let you know you don't have to go in. This is done at basically highway speeds.

    I’m sure you know this by now but what you call an extra long trailer (the 53 foot long ones) is actually the standard length in the US. I am a trucker and that’s what I pull every day. It can be interesting on some deliveries but it’s what we’re trained to reverse when we get our license.

Thanks for helping me get started, still enjoying the videos and am now interested in ETS2. Kenworth W900 is out as well as fines being cheaper at the start and get more expensive as you progress on. Turning on red signs are going to be posted for those who are not from America and don't know the legality of it. Then supposedly later on more speed signs will be posted in better locations to tell us to slow down.

    The thing is with the weigh stations is my grandma told me about this cuz she was a truck driver for Warner enterprises was that the way station is not only measure how much the trailer weighs but how much the occupants inside the tractor weigh as well cuz if you're driving and you know you're pulling for max weight and your truck seems to be struggling then you know they're going to pull you over and you can get a fine for that. Yeah Iowa 80 is one of the biggest truck stops in the US my grandma's actually been there it's literally just a huge gas station and it's also a souvenir shop. And honestly I'd never be able to drive a semi but I would love to go to Iowa 80.

  • @roomofidiots
    @roomofidiots 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In aid of the weigh station discussion, IRL, it not only slows you down but you can have your entire rig inspected even if you are under weight. Being a trucker, it's common knowledge among drivers that weigh stations are simply a way for that state to make money off trucks they inspect. Essentially it's a racket. A state cop told me that if they do pull your rig behind the station for inspection, you could have a brand new truck off the lot and they will find something to write up. This equates to what can be huge fines and if you're owner-operator like me (own the truck) it puts marks or points on your truck and business. After so many, they can put the truck out of commission. Inspection write ups can range from loose debris on a trailer to mud covering a signal light. It's ridiculous and completely annoying not to mention financially burdening.

    In the US cops can use radar and there is rear facing radar and forward facing radar. They can radar you in front of you and still pull you over. This can change from state to state and the certification requirements for refacing is a lot higher and more costly so usually state police or larger cities are the only ones to use it.

    In Brazil, we don't stop and n wheigh station, u has to go though slowly, like 30km, ahn than if you aren't right, maybe to heavy, automatically sends you to weigh again, but than you have to go to other lane and stop. If you really are to heavy for your kind of truck uhave to stop there, you will be ticket and u have to wait till some truck who can drive It comes to take your cargo and you can leave. Sorry my poorly Brazilian English haha.

    A truck carrying no load has really savage brakes as in you can hardly touch the pedal,also with the air system you don't get the feedback like you do in a car.a good example of this is when you take a truck for a mot you have to load them up or they wont pass the brake test on the rollers

    Love the Kenworth W900L is gorgeous. Already went to the dealer and customized it the way I want it. Gonna be about 160K if I buy it out right with no trade. Giving up the Peterbilt for the W900 in my company!
    SCS STILL need to give us air horns and beacons as exterior options (The mods! They do nothing)!!! Also more interior options would be nice (like interior cabin and sleeper lighting. A TV, fridge, and DVD player would be nice for the sleeper cabins. All you can do is change the dash board trim and add a passenger side mirror above the door currently. When you are a trucker in real life the comforts of home ARE a real thing.
    BTW I have seen that exact documentary on the truck stops (and yep the TA is one of them) The History Channel broadcast it a wile back, and the run it on occasion. I think it was on Modern Marvels. I really hope they are added to ATS and that you can pull into them. They really provide a lot for truckers. The one in Iowa is the biggest in the US.

    +Squirrel, I hope you see this comment. I got the longer train mod and it is nice but there are some issues with it. Some trains have invisible train cars in a long train, so you will see the engines some cars, then invisible cars, then more cars connected to it... Not to big of a deal but there is one more problem as well, where interstate 80 meets highway 93 there is a small town that doesn't have a name. A train will go through the buildings and across the road, it isn't an object that you can hit which is good.

I think TAs are called travel centers of america now,petro truck stops were my fav. Thanks for taking a girl back down memory lane...pun intended. :-)

    Funny you said that about wheeler dealers, I've thought the same lol.
    That said you're also playing the game like a sensible Brit, not a risk taking red blooded American!
    In America we drown ourselves in debt and work ourselves out of it and we either win or lose at our gamble. You're playing American truck simulator, time to play it like an American. Take out that loan and roll the dice, if you're not close to bankrupt, listening to country, and drooling at every burger or steak shack you're not properly going about the American experience!
    Not to mention the series will do good to have a bit of risk, you're too careful and capable to lose out with the risks currently present.
    Been digging the series thus far but there's some food for thought, cheers!

    TA rebranded as Travel Centers of America, still TA for short. Also, in the US many cops use front and rear facing radar in their vehicles, and their radars notify them when they detect speeding. So yes, cops in the US can get you for speeding even if they are in front of you. And in most states it is perfectly legal.

    I bought the new Kenny W900 for 118,000 dollars. It's okay except that it's difficult to hitch up a trailer accurately as the exhaust blocks the mirrors...even with Track iR!
    Also I'd like to say Squirrel you're a dab hand at parking the trailers up, well done!

    I think that fog or mist mod may have actually tricked the AI into thinking it was raining; which then the law would require you to turn on your headlights. Love this series BTW. One of the only TH-camrs I've found so far that isn't trying to flip the trucks or chasing down the AI for 'cutting them off' and ramming into them at an intersection SMH. I like it so much I subscribed and decided to watch them all!

    Just tried the W900 on a "Quick Job" - didn't like it to be honest. Felt too big (f'nar, f'nar) to be comfortable driving.
    Think I'll stick to me Peterbilt for the mo.
