  • I got out of work and headed towards Columbia. I made my way to Andrews Yard and saw NS 191 still working the yard. Soon enough, I found out Josh Nance was at the controls. While they were still working the yard, Josh told me to pull over by the tower so I could record him getting the second unit fired up. This time, it would be a GE ES44DC. Sit back, relax, and listen to that 4-Stroke GE GEVO-12 Prime Mover coming to life! Enjoy!
*Skip to 4:10 or 4:40 if you get bored.

This has to be the first GEVO startup I've ever heard that actually sounds like it's alive and has a soul

Takes about 5-10 minutes to get a diesel locomotive fired up and ready to “punch in”, whereas it took about 24-72 hours to get a steam locomotive ready to “punch in”. My knowledge of locomotives is not that extensive, so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

German baureihe (class) 215/216/217/218, also known as the V160 family took 5 minutes 😁

A typical modern diesel (made in the last 30 years) that is still warm can be started up and ready to pull freight in about 2 minutes. If it's been shut down for days there are a few extra steps, but still only a few extra minutes.

More like 5-10 minutes from a cold start, mainly you’re waiting on the computers to boot up

    • @ConductorDon

It does put out 4400 now. NS originally wanted them to top out at 4000 to prolong the life of the prime mover. They did the same with their first batch of dash 9s. They're just too cheap to relable them. All the standard cab dash 9s are AC44C6Ms now and are essentially the same as AC4400 CWs.
