Ellos no hablan el castellano medieval, aunque se parezca en algunas cosas, como se parece el castellano actual en algunas cosas o muchas al castellano de hace 500 anos. Para lso que hablan ladino entonces la lengua "fosil" seria el castellano actual? Todas las lenguas evolucionan y cambian.
@@vincentfernandez7328 Tienes razón sobre el hecho de que el ladino haya evolucionado y haya divergido de ese castellano medieval. Pero es innegable que esa lengua, al ser una comunidad más pequeña, ha evolucionado menos.
@@Thefermar337 pues todo lo contrario, las lenguas con menos material escrito varían más rapidamente, pues la escritura fija la gramática y la ortografía, y las hace relativamente estables (como el español de España).
En Colombia todavia usamos algunas expresiones de la epoca. La mas usada es "sumerce"
This is fascinating. I'm a spanish native speaker from Colombia and I am amazed he uses some words that my grandparents used to say before they died like "asina", instead of así, and "menester" instead of necesidad . Those are really old words that nobody uses today in Colombia but were completely common a century ago.

@@oliaguilar1Nah, they're just old-fashioned words. Like 'guisar', once the main way to say 'to cook', replaced by 'cocinar' and now (at least in Mexico) only people over 60 use it, and it's one of those words that Sephardic Jews use.
@@oliaguilar1 No In My case it's the same. It's just that judeoespañol is just medieval spanish. And in this continent most of our Grand parents and Grand-grand parents still use archaisms.
@@oliaguilar1It's funny because not much ago I discovered that maybe My grand-grand father was a ladino from the balkans. Which is funny. But I do not know a lot of that side of the family. It's in my second last name 'Olivera' which is always in the list of sephardic last names.
I loved his joke about demanding 500 years of rent 😂 It reminds me of when my 80 years old Brazilian uncle got lost during a trip to Portugal. He asked a random schoolgirl for directions, and when she ignored him, he yelled: "you took off with all of our gold, least you can do is help out for a minute!". The joke went over her head, but it worked out because she thought he was completely senile and waited with him until his tour guide showed up.

Es raro que el Ladino tiene 500 años pero aun suena igual como el idioma Español del 2021?? Debería de sonar muy diferente al español moderno si es un idioma del 1492. El Español del 1492 nadie lo entendería.

It is highly commendable and incredible that they have been able to keep their language alive for 500 years. Instead, other groups of immigrants lose their language in a single generation.

Me encanta oír hablar ladino porque me transporta al español de la época Cervantina,y que hoy solo se puede disfrutar si lees esos textos originales,pero no se escucharía si no oyes a alguien hablar ladino como este señor fantástico. It is interesting how words are similar to the moroccan dialect also.
He said kirás, "yo vine de mi granpapa a tomar las kiras daki". In moroccan darija, the word is Kra, in Spanish is Alquiler.
Es muy meritorio e increíble a la vez que hayan sido capaces de mantener su lengua viva durante 500 años. Luego en cambio otros grupos de inmigrantes pierden su lengua en una sola generación.
The gentleman said something that caught my attention and that was the Spanish Government keep requiring petty things like know the language and history. Well we Sephardics are part of the history of both Spain & Portugal. Ladino language is medieval Spanish as a base with Portuguese ( Galician dialect ) and Hebrew. Depends where your ancestors settled like in the case of this gentleman Turkish is incorporated.

I'm Mexican-American living in California. I speak Spanish, and I understand this guy way better than the DJs in Spanish Radio Stations here in California. They speak a million miles per hour. Spanish when spoken with intent and care is beautiful, just like Ladino.
I took a DNA test and it said I'm about 2/3 Iberian (from Spain and Portugal). Then out of nowhere, it said I'm 10% Ashkenazi and 5% Sephardic Jewish , which came as a surprise, because I come from a long line of Catholics.
It may be my father's side, because his side of the family were amongst the original Californios from the 18th century. We figured that some of my family had to be Conversos or even Crytpo-Jews from the Inquisition.

Damn his ennunciation is so clear for a language so apart from other spanish derived languages over time and distance. Im colombian and hes a lot more intelligible than some accents here
Menester, esa palabra no la he escuchado desde que era niña, mi abuela paterna era española y usaba mucho esa palabra.
Wow this is so cool. I know Spanish and studied a few languages, besides the obvious Turkish words he is using words that are more French, some Arabic words, a Greek word and a Hebrew word. It is so fun.
And then you hear him say menester and it puts you into Cervantes.
Actually, all I hear is Spanish. I don't think he used any foreign word, except when he said "how do you say ....?" And maybe a couple of french sounding words (museum), which I'm not sure they are french or just old spanish. Everything else is old Spanish.
He says:
ivrit for Hebrew (from Hebrew)
Mesala (مثلا) for for example (from Arabic but could be through Turkish)
Yani (يعني) for it means from Arabic but could be through Turkish
Meldar for study is from a Greek word
Kedar for amount maybe? And maybe from قدرة or a related Turkish word
These are some words I am not sure of their origin but sound Latin based. Are these old Spanish?

I am catalan, and I am able to understand perfectly, because catalan sounds very similar, even we keep words more similar than in modern spanish. Shalom desde Sepharad.🤝.

Que triste historia. Me gusta que dijo que sabía que para que sobreviviera el ladino se pudo haber ido mezclando con el español del resto del mundo hispanoparlante, se iba a perder el ladino de él pero iba a sobrevivir la tradición, más no se hizo :(
Me encanta! Soy turco y le entiendo perfectamente con unas palabras turcas y su ladino. Y me ha llevado a toda historia en 550. La verdad es que en Turquía había una diversidad duró siglos súper fuerte pero no lo conocemos. Después de poder hablar español, me di cuenta que los judías en Turquía son españoles y ladino es el idioma de 550 años antes de España. Y dije ‘WOW’. Que suerte que tengo he descubierto una historia impresionante. Porque no sabemos nada de Turquía por culpa de nacionalismo y fascismo que siempre nos enseñan. Muchísimas gracias por este vídeo!!
I love how clear his thoughts are, how accepting of all the current language situations in Turkey and in the World. I'd spend hours talking with this man. I can see nothing but humble wisdom in his eyes.
Absolutely fascinating
I can understand pretty much all of this through Castilian. There are some words that seem very old-fashioned and the pronunciation sticks out immediately, but nothing that seems totally out of the ordinary if you have any exposure to other romance languages or to old literature. It feels maybe somewhere in between a dialect and a language. If I'm listening to portuguese, I can get maybe 60%, and catalan probably about 80%, but this is more like 90 or so

Amazing Video. Every language tells a story - and undeniably, part of that story disappears when the language disappears, despite the advent of modern technology. I wish more and more people would keep these beautiful cultures alive - though modernization (arguably) is working against this.

@@diegoramirezzz456 no es igual, parecido pero no igual. Espanhol de hoy tiene mas parecido c9n portusuese que ladino. Lo que pasa es el acento esta en espanol y pq vive en espana tienen costume de usars las palavras que son parecida al espanol, pero ladino y espanol no son 70% parecido. espanol y portuguese son 89%. ladino tiene muchas mas palavras que no tiene nada que ver con espanol

There are Ashkenazi Jewish people also in Spain. But we don't speak Ladino, logically. Only modern Spanish. Para rizar el rizo. Y al menos en mi caso, de apellido no solo hispano, sino más católico que un santo. 🤣 Aunque siendo ateo de convicción, me la pela bastante.

"Kale" this, "kale" that... Catalan for "there's need of / for" ("cal") . In Spanish, it would be "hace falta". It's not only Spanish with Hebrew influences, there's Catalan and possibly other languages mixed in in this man's "Judeo-Spanish".
Yo también encontré similitudes con el catalán y el gallego.
Esto es porque el ladino se separó del resto de lenguas ibéricas cuando estaban todas formándose. El castellano medieval (cabe decir que no habia un solo castellano por aquel entonces, puesto que la gramática no se habia puesto en papel aun, era un collage de innumerables dialectos ) se pareció mucho mas al gallego, catalán, mozárabe y ladino de lo que se parecen ahora porque acababan de empezar a despegarse del latín, relativamente hablando. Despues cada uno siguió su camino.
@@danutorr exacto, cuanto más regresemos en el tiempo, más cercanos están los distintos idiomas ibéricos que nacieron de la rama ibérica del latín. Aquí nadie tiene en cuenta las profundas transformaciones de la fonética del castellano en el siglo XVII, que fueron las que separó más al castellano del portugués y, en menor medida, del gallego. Hay que tener en cuenta que las del tronco iberorromance eran el Gallego-portugués, el Astur-leonés, el Castellano y el Aragonés, ya que el Catalán era del tronco Occitanorromance. Teniendo en cuenta que los sefardíes fueron expulsados antes de estas transformaciones del castellano, es por lo que su pronunciación nos recuerda tanto al portugués y al gallego.
@@mclabec1946 El portugués tb. ha tenido profundas transformaciones fonéticas en el XVII y posteriores. Más apreciables al sur que al norte
Lo hablamos en Texas..tenemos 150 Anos aqui ...vinieron de Nuevo Leon....pero tiene muncha influencia de el propio Espanol...pero usamos palabras como Ansina, Ainda, fuiamos, hizites, comites, como se dice, scuela, ampezates, se oye sencillo pero quedan partes de la lengua..siempre me dezian los de Mexico porque habla asi el Espanol Mocho?..no entendia hasta agora..

El Ladino esta basado en Español del tiempo de la expulsión y esas palabras no son exclusivas de los Sefarditas ya que en Iberoamerica en regiones aisladas quedaron poblaciones que mantuvieron el idioma de la época en la que llegaron .

Me interesan mucho las similitudes entre regiones hispanohablantes aisladas. Por ejemplo, no sería raro escuchar "vos de'onde vinites" en la región paisa en Colombia, casi idéntico a lo que dijo el señor en 1:48.

Cuando miro esto me siento muy alegre porque me cuerdo de mis grandpas y grandmas y como hablavan con nosotros...y como plantaban igos, Granadas, chavacanes, y uvas cerca de la casa... cuando miro todo esto ahora entiendo...si somo diferentes....tienes que pensar unos momentos... tenian muncha razon...pero no podian decir nada...nos matan.....

Español y ladino son la misma lengua con ligeras variaciones (no pretendo entrar en discusiones teóricas sobre si son o no lenguas distintas). Se le entiende todo a este señor.

España debería enviarles maestros gratis de Español y musica para que los jovenes perfeccionen el idioma, seguro que estarían encantados xq el idioma Español atrae por la música , los paises exóticos y la amabilidad de la gente.

No, no. Ellos no se interesan por aprender el español actual de España o de América, ellos prefieren (si es que lo desean pues ya ves que él tiene cierta inconformidad con el uso del ladino) estudiar y que sus hijos aprendan aquel español del siglo XV. Alguna vez le escuché a un ladino que vivía en México, que no fue bueno para él el contacto con el español actual porque inevitablemente su ladino evolucionó hacia el español mexicano del siglo XXI y que muchas veces tenía dificultad para distinguir si eran las palabras del ladino o del español rural mexicano.

I am a spanish speaker and I find differences in the Ladino this gentleman speaks compared to other Ladino speakers videos on You tube. I can understand about 80% of it because I am familiar with old castillian which in my opinion what Ladino is.

My mother grew up in Yehud, Israel, where there were a lot of Turkish that spoke Ladino to each other. Ladino was spoken all the time, and you could hear it everywhere. Both of my grandparents are from Turkey.
Interesting thing: does anyone else who speaks German (I have C1 when it comes to passive understanding) and thus automatically understands some Yiddish think like that: Yiddish seems way farther from modern standard German than Ladino/Judeo-Spanish is from modern standard Spanish? The relative lack of Hebrewisms is one distinguishing feature. Now, admittedly Slavic languages had a huge influence on Yiddish, making it less German-like. Yet then the question is, how did Ladino escape Turkish, or Greece etc. influence of the same degree? Which ever way I try to see it, Ladino seems to have preserved its (Romance) origin more than Yiddish its Germanic origin.
I think it also had to do with the fact that Yiddish has existed for far longer than ladino. Yiddish is about a millennium old while ladino has only had half that time to evolve and change.

I have no problem understanding Western Spanish, meaning Spanish from the Western hemisphere, Mexico, Central America, South America, and that is all because I used to listen to my grandmother and her friends speaking LADINO. AND I AM LUCKY THAT I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, WHERE LADINO IS HAVING A REVIVAL AT UCLA, IT IS NOT GOING TO DIE OUT HERE. ALSO MY PARENTS AND THEIR FRIENDS, MOST OF THEM WERE GREEK AND TURKISH, SOME ISRAELI, SOME OF THEM TOTALLY AMERICAN ALL SPOKE LADINO WHEN THEY WERE IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS, AND AT TEMPLE. WE HAVE A GREAT SEPHARDIC TEMPLE IN LOS ANGELES.
Alguna vez le escuché decir a unas sefarditas argentinas algo similar: que el ladino no se perdería en Argentina, que tienen escuelas, programas de radio y periódicos. Ojalá sea así y que ni en E.U. ni en Argentina se pierda, por si sucede el pesimista diagnóstico de este señor de que en Turquía se habrá de perder.

Muy interesante la charla. Debo reconocer que al principio no entendía cuál era esa especie de inconformidad que tiene. No me refiero a no entender sus palabras, sí las entendía; me refiero a esa especie de reproche y afecto simultaneo y contradictorio contra el idioma ladino.
He oído decir que los sefarditas suelen tener una relación de amor-odio con España (habría que ampliarlo a la lengua). Dicen que los ladinos sienten a España como una madre que los relegó: la aman, la necesitan, pero están molestos con ella porque fue ingrata. Quizá eso explique la charla entre bromas y reproches que tuvo con el taxista español. Le decía, vengo después de 500 años a pedir me regresen las llaves mi casa, que me quitaron, que me echaron de aquí; no sé quién vive en mi casa, pero yo quiero que me regresen mi casa, tengo 500 años esperando que me la regresen. Y cuando la mujer que lo entrevista le pregunta que si quiere un pasaporte español, dice que no lo pide, pero que lo aceptaría.
Él siente que su "casa está tomada" y tiene razón. Perdón por alejarme un poco, pero tiene que ver con esto. A los refugiados españoles en México de la guerra civil (1936-1939) les pasaba algo similar. Hay una novela muy dramática de Daniel Sueiro que se llama Estos son tus hermanos. Y habla de lo mismo: de un español que después de muchos años de dictadura de Franco puede regresar a España, va a buscar la que fue su casa y toca la puerta. Abre un hombre que no lo reconoce. El exiliado sí; sí recuerda muy bien quién es aquel que ahora vive en su casa; quizá tenía muchos años viviendo ahí, pero era su casa, la casa del exiliado, y que la tuvo que dejar para huir, para salvar la vida.
Para este señor es amargo saber que esos hombres (los taxistas, los embajadores, los cónsules españoles) son sus hermanos; quisiera abofetearlos, pero también quisiera darles un abrazo y reconciliarse, perdonarlos por lo que antes le hicieron a sus madres, a sus padres, a sus abuelos. Muy dramático.
Qué buen comentario! Y qué bonito!. Es verdad que Méjico ayudó mucho acogiendo muy generosamente a los refugiados de la Guerra Civil española.
Y es verdad que qué sensación tan rara y desagradable tiene que ser la sensación de amor- odio con tu país de origen, porque a la vez lo sienten suyo pero se les ha obligado al desarraigo por razones ajenas a ellos y muy desagradables.

Entendo Ladino com facilidade
I see the Catalan influence in Ladino, in things like "cale que hablemos en ladino". The verb "caldre" comes from Catalan.
El castellano se nutrió de todas las variantes ibéricas, hasta convertirse en el español que hablamos hoy. Yo soy gallego y veo muchas palabras gallegas...
También ese castellano antiguo nutrió nuestras variantes, obviamente. Como todas las lenguas nacionales, francés, italiano, inglés etc...las forman sus hablantes, y los hablantes latinos en su dia tenían mil lenguajes...
Tal vez era normal en toda la península y murió en español pero sobrevivió en catalán. También dijo un 'ainda' como en gallego y portugués

En español medieval existía el verbo "caler", así que probablemente en ladino no sea un préstamo del catalán o el aragonés, donde también existe; sin embargo, ya en el siglo XIV es un verbo casi obsoleto en español.

As a Sephardic Jew who can understand Ladino (I speak Spanish though), I can’t help but agree with him. Ladino is an interesting language to study, but it’s not OUR language. Hebrew is our language.
