The "straight wavy line" made me giggle. This turned out beautifully. I was a little on edge about the red, but you blended it out with the black so well that it looks stunning. Looking forward to the next one! Take care!
I I like the fact that you like try new things out. So far of all the woodcutters I’ve watched on TH-cam you are the only one I’ve making those cut in designs. Keep it up because I’m going to continue to watch.😊❤
I honestly thought, "Well, this will be the first art piece of his that I don't like." But you toned down the red and purple...great move! And once again you trusted your instincts to create a beautiful feature accessory for any occasion. Well done! Merry Christmas to you and your family. 😊
Hello Mike. This one was really interesting and turned out beautifully. The little “error” when originally mounting the blank - to my mind - proved to be a real asset to the finished bowl. With the edge leaning inwards the patterning and colour is so much more visible, which shows off the hard work you put in to that element of your design. A very happy accident. I like the colours you used. However, the shape of the bowl suggests a bit more razzle dazzle for a future repeat performance. But I am just a humble observer and you have quite enough artistic flair to know exactly what you want to achieve.
Thanks Angela, I am always happy when an accident provides a better opportunity 😀. I think you are right that I should have gone a bit bolder but perhaps next time, all the best, Mike
Beautiful NJC Bowl this would be gorgeous with winter greenery, brightly colored spring decorations, & the hues of autumn would be very pretty- you’ve done it again KUDOS😅
Love the flow of the colours following the wavy line, makes it neverending as you turn the bowl. Love the bowl. Thanks for bringing us something unique and beautiful.
Thanks Fiona, this was so time consuming and my shoulders and neck ached at the end but it was worth it. All the best and I hope you and yours have a great Christmas 😀
@MikeHolton thank you for all that you go through to get your videos out to us. Greatly appreciated. Wishing you and your family all the blessings of the festive season. May it be a time of love, laughter and special time spent together 🎄🎁
That is a lovely bowl, Mike, showing your artistic talent. I’m the boring, practical one in our household, my wife does the crafting and granddaughter is the artist. As always, thank you for taking the time to share 🌞
Oh wow. The texture created with the burr and the layers of colors looks amazing! I wonder if you could achieve a tarnished or patina hammered bronze or copper look with a similar process? Anyway. Love how this came out! Can't wait to see what else you do with these metallic pastes.
Mike, at the beginning it could have made a prop for your local amateur dramatics society.. but I can't think of many plays that call for a wheel of parmesan cheese... What a splendid bowl by the end. It looks like it is one of those pieces that asks the question "how on earth did they make that?" .. we know of course because we saw the video. Painstaking artistry. Truly unique and exactly as you described, festive without being over the top. It is good that your error caused the sides to have to slant inwards as it showcases the pattern much better. I doubt we will see you between now and the big day so happy Christmas and very successful 2024 to you and yours. Thank you for everything you do and have shared with us this year.
Thanks so much my friend, I love a good happy accident where mistakes take you along a better path 😀. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a fantastic new year, all the best, Mike 😀
Hi Mike, well you have done it again another fantastic bowl, The idea for the wave line and the stippling blends well together. Thanks for the video looking forward to the next one.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What a delightfully interesting bowl Mike. I love the way you are prepared to experiment with ideas & the attitude of 'if I don't like the texture, the colour, the shape etc, I will turn it away & start again. Well done to you on that one. This IS a bowl for all occasions, there is nothing to 'pigeon hole it' for a one off occasion in the year. I don't mind the chosen piece of timber, it makes a quiet but pleasant statement as I see it. Very enjoyable video once again Mike & I think there is perhaps more artist in the man than he perhaps gives himself credit for. Thank for sharing & cheers, Don from South Australia.
Thanks Don, that is the great thing about wood, if we make a mistake we can just rub it out with a gouge and try again. The only mistake you can make is to never try in the first place. All the best, Mike 😊
The eyes of the beholder… Appreciating your creativity, willingness to play. It’s apparent you love doing what you do. BTW, living at the top of a hill - the sound of the wind in the video is very familiar. Happy Holidays!
Fabulous bowl Mike....I love the colours and texture. The shape is really nice too. I like my bowls to have thick walls. You've given me ideas to do something similar. Well done, Ralph.
Great effects, Mike. I do agree you could've been a bit bolder with your choice of colours, but as you say... you will be doing more of this method so next time....!! (I think the problem may have been covering everything with the dark pigment - the colours beneath lost their lustre). I like the whole ethos of this channel - always challenging yourself with things you haven't done before and working out how to get the best out of it! Please keep this going - not only for your own sake, but for us as well... It's fascinating trying to guess what you'll come up with next!! Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Thanks so much Phil, I'm having the time of my life, I have no expectations of myself so I am free to have a go at anything I like. I will keep it up for as long as I am able, all the best, Mike 😀
I also got a smile from the "straight wavy line" comment. As you said the dimpling took a lot of time. The bowl looks terrific. Well done. I was happy to see you select a wood blank which is much easier for you to turn than some of the recent really hard woods. Colour choice is so personal. I think the soft shades of the guilders paste go well with the tulip. A nice bowl for the house, or a very unstable frisbee. If you want some inspiration for other carved or drawn embellishments, look up Zentangle. Happy holidays. You may be colder than my area at present, which is unusual. No likelyhood of white Xmas in eastern PA. That is fine for me. I am not looking forward to having to clear snow off the driveway. Dave.
Thanks Dave, some of those Zentangles are a little intimidating 😀. The tulip was a good choice but I hate turning it, the tear out is horrible to deal with, not a great wood to get a decent finish on. It has been a little warmer here over the last few days but heavy winds. Not they have stopped and it's getting colder again lol. Happy holidays, Mike
"...straight wavy line..." 😆Though I definitely understand what you meant. Maybe smooth wavy line? I'm glad you ended up choosing the gold/bronze rather than the green, I think that would have been too Christmasy for a year-round display piece. I like how the smaller texture turned out, and you should for sure put your initials in a piece, at the least. And I was amused that I am pretty sure I recognize the gilding polishes as I have several for my paper crafting 😊
A beautiful work of art sir, beautiful indeed. Love the colors and the dark to light, very nice. Thanks for sharing your hard work with us, hard work on both sides of the camera.🎄🎉 Happy Seasons to you and yours, and Happy Seasons to all the good folks on TH-cam.🌿 ✴✴✴✴✴
Hi Mike, another challenge, another one for "I must try that" (well done on sticking to the task with the dimples!) We all 'create design opportunities' by mounting blanks the wrong way at times, thankfully in this case it was not a major blooper and I liked the shape it took you to. I will not mention 'the verbal blooper', it is late at night and I will just go straight to waving you goodnight. Cheers.
I just finished watching your video of the thorny australian burl and how it turned out. Constantly sharpening the tools reminded me of the time I got my hands on a piece of Ipe and turned a candy dish. I was sharpening my tools every 5 minutes. But what a joy at the end.
Great technique on undulating curved wavy straight line! Hope Santa has some lovely new tools for you Have a great break Thank you for pushing into unknown territory time and time again Merry Christmas
Thanks Nicholas, there will be another video out on boxing day so no rest for me although the video is finished to I get to relax tomorrow. All the best, Mike
Very interesting bowl. I am more impressed after seeing the closeup view. A mix of nuts would go well. Merry Christmas to you and your family and thanks for sharing.
A very interesting and creative piece Mike. I really like the dimpling pattern, and while it took a lot of time (your time, not ours, due to your fantastic editing!), it came out beautifully. Using the thin tape to create a smooth wavy line and then filling in the rest with painters tape was brilliant. All in all, a very attractive and festive experiment!
Now that's a piece for fondling again, and everyone has their own definition of colourful (mine is a lot less subtle!) The blending you did on the colours was top-notch.
Beautiful results with the colours Mike, The design with the little dimples makes me just want to touch it. The design looks so tactile, If it was in my home we would be taking turns enjoying the feel of the texture. 3 out of 4 of us are autistic and we would be using this gorgeous bowl for anxiety therapy. Once again you have created another stunning and very stylish piece of art. I absolutely love it! ❤😊 Merry Christmas to you and your family Mike, from Me and mine. Wishing you a very happy and blessed new year. Xxxx
Thanks so much Shelley, I really do appreciate the therapy in touch, being a very tactile person how something feels is as important to me as how it looks. Have a wonderful Christmas, Mike 😊
Merry Christmas to you and yours. A very pretty and unique bowl. I really like the shape with the colours, and love the way you blended them. Perfect choices. Great bowl.
While the colours are a personal choice, I would have chosen green, again a personal choice. Overall I love the design. The work you did with the Dremel must have taken some time to complete. Can't wait for the next one
Gday Mike, quite correct in your choice of top and bottom. Other way around probably better. Not sure about the dark grey colour though. I would have made bowl a little thinner and curved the base corner to reduce overall thickness at that point, this would also have significantly lessened overall weight of bowl. You could have left thin wavy line there and carved top of line as well and reversed the colours. Use opposite colour from colour wheel,Eg red:green, yellow: purple etc Thanks for sharing Mike.
Another beautiful piece as always. I love the pattern and I think Father Christmas would be proud to display such a wonderful bowl. Thank you again for all your efforts 🙂
A festive bowl indeed!! Pretty shape, colours and design. A new trend has been set with this Straight-Wavey line bowl; that’s for sure!! Nice holidays Mike and be safe!
Hi Mike, another enjoyable and thought provoking project, well done. Looking forward to more ideas from you in the new year, especially working with resin. Have a great Christmas and happy new year.
If you say it's a "straight-wavey line" then it's a straight-wavey line! LOVE the shape and colors of this beautiful bowl. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. . .and Hooch.
Good morning, my friend. (NC, USA Time) Might I suggest that you check the preload of the bearings for both the spindle & top pulley shaft, as well as the lower belt pulley shaft. I am not a wood lathe engineer. However, I am an industrial engineer. My ears are telling me that it may soon be time to check the backlash pressures for each of the points mentioned above. Nothing is wrong with your wonderful lathe. I only noticed an increase of chatter recently. A torque wrench is all you need. Great videos, as always, Mike. A Happy New Year to you and yours.
Thanks so much for you advice. It was actually the lever that retracts and engages the spindle lock. The screw was a little loose so the lock was brushing against the metal. There are probably better names for everything I just said but my engineering language is not up to scratch. All the best, Mike
@MikeHolton Check the torque on things at least 2X/year, only as a matter of prevention. You'll be good to go. I can't even guess what you might show us next. That's merely one of the reasons we enjoy you. We just never know. Do we?
The "straight wavy line" made me giggle. This turned out beautifully. I was a little on edge about the red, but you blended it out with the black so well that it looks stunning. Looking forward to the next one! Take care!

Haha thanks so much Charmaine, I should really think first before I say something 😂
The bowl looks great another ideal to try 👌
Thanks John, have fun giving it a go 😀
Good morning, my friend. (NC, USA Time)
Might I suggest that you check the preload of the bearings for both the spindle & top pulley shaft, as well as the lower belt pulley shaft.
Do we?
@@frankashworth5961 Thanks Frank, I have so many ideas and not enough time lol. The next video is not a bowl or a vase!
Wishing you and the family a Merry Christmas ....thanks for sharing your fantastic work
