Note: This photo of the four women with Col. White was lost to history until the 1990's. Elizabeth Cole of Leesburg called the W&OD Trail office to say she had some photos and artifacts from her Grandfather-in-Law who was the railroad stationmaster in Leesburg from 1867 to 1918 and she wanted to donate them to the railroad collection. She also pulled out a photo that she thought was Mosby. The trail staff was also in charge of Ball's Bluff and one staff member who had Civil War expertise recognized Elijah White. No one we spoke with was familiar with this image, including Col. White's descendants still living in Leesburg. But we theorized that as stationmaster, Charles Albert English would have known and interacted with Col. White. The photo was a reproduction and might have been handed out to friends of the family. Further research by the staff member found the arrest records and Confederate Veteran article detailing the arrest of the four women. That led to us guessing the identities of the women in the photo and that it may have been produced to honor them.
There is very little. Mrs White is mentioned mostly in histories about her husband's activities during the war. There's a bit more detail in a biography written about Colonel White and I could send you a link to that story. I also have a digital copy of the Confederate veteran article written by Anna Hempstone. Otherwise the only other mentions were the arrest reports from the Civil War records.
