    Too bad they shut down when they did. If they could've seen what was coming in terms of the buildup in NOVA, they'd be around. They would've had plenty of business by going back into passenger service in addition to freight. VRE, and some parts of Metro probably would never have existed, they might have been the commuter service today that those ones provide.

    • @jml8975
      @jml8975 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think they'd still be around. The highway system was expanding rapidly, which diminished their business, though it did give them a temporary source of traffic. First, their usual freight shippers (most of which were rooted in the farming business), started going out of business as the area became built up. Second, railroads need large freight shippers to keep them profitable. Personally, I just don't see those shippers around the NOVA area. I believe the line was considered for a light rail line, but that never materialized.

    • @kman-mi7su
      @kman-mi7su 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jml8975 You're thinking in terms of a freight shipper business, that's where I disagree. Passenger service is king for the rails around here and they could've simply adapted. (plenty of federal and state money to do so) And there are still shippers in this area that's why NS and CSX still have local pickups here. But, if they had the passengers service that VRE and parts of Metro run instead of them, they'd be around.

    There was an interurban railway from Washington, D.C. to Kensington, Maryland which closed in the 1930s...this according to my grandparents who moved to Kensington in 1940. It is not to be confused with the rail lines which presently connect Kensington and Washington now. My impression was that it ran along Connecticut Ave. to where there is a triangular split and a stoplight now....forget the name of that intersection. You can ask if interested and I will look on the map.

    As Wikipedia notes: Super 8mm film is a motion picture film format released in 1965 by Eastman Kodak as an improvement over the older "Double" or "Regular" 8 mm home movie format. The standard 8 mm (also known as regular 8) film format was developed by the Eastman Kodak company during the Great Depression and released to the market in 1932 to create a home movie format that was less expensive than 16 mm.

    Note: This photo of the four women with Col. White was lost to history until the 1990's. Elizabeth Cole of Leesburg called the W&OD Trail office to say she had some photos and artifacts from her Grandfather-in-Law who was the railroad stationmaster in Leesburg from 1867 to 1918 and she wanted to donate them to the railroad collection. She also pulled out a photo that she thought was Mosby. The trail staff was also in charge of Ball's Bluff and one staff member who had Civil War expertise recognized Elijah White. No one we spoke with was familiar with this image, including Col. White's descendants still living in Leesburg. But we theorized that as stationmaster, Charles Albert English would have known and interacted with Col. White. The photo was a reproduction and might have been handed out to friends of the family. Further research by the staff member found the arrest records and Confederate Veteran article detailing the arrest of the four women. That led to us guessing the identities of the women in the photo and that it may have been produced to honor them.

  • @novahistoryremembered3288
    @novahistoryremembered3288 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is very little. Mrs White is mentioned mostly in histories about her husband's activities during the war. There's a bit more detail in a biography written about Colonel White and I could send you a link to that story. I also have a digital copy of the Confederate veteran article written by Anna Hempstone. Otherwise the only other mentions were the arrest reports from the Civil War records. Email me at novahistoryremembered@gmail.com for the links.
