About the 'Z' in the Penn 7xx Z models, just a guess, but I believe that all of the 7xx Z series use an anodized aluminum spool and the 'Z' suffix was just an abbreviated means of making that distinction. And it sounds 'cool', when you tell the young folks that 'this here are real fishing reels, my Penn 712Z's, 710Z's, 704Z's, and that there is the almighty Penn 706Z!!!!!!!!!'. I love'em all.
I'm not sure on the designation. I've checked the manuals and there is no reference to why it is called a "Z". I need to check some more - Thanks Dennis

Awesome video, Dennis. I have been asking a few questions about the Ambassadeur 5000D recently, and all have been resolved but one. To my understanding, the 5000D was introduced in 1973, and discontinued in the late 1970s. The date of production can be traced to the serial number on the reel seat. Ex: 730504 means 1973/05/04 (please correct me if I'm wrong). However, when I went to go check my serial number, the date was 720203 - or a year before production started. Is this an error? Am I all wrong? Is my reel just exceptionally rare? The rest of the internet is no help at all. Thank you!
I can't help you with this as I do not know the exact date of manufacture. The 5000D is a direct drive version of the Ambassadeur and that makes it somewhat unusual. Value is dependent on condition. Your best indicator of value is to search eBay for comparable. The two that recently sold averaged around $75. One was in poorer condition and sold for just $36. The other around $90. If you have a very clean reel with the original box and paperwork, that could easily double the worth to around $200 for the right buyer.
Hsppy New Year Everyone. I didn't get a question in but my question is why does my Mitchell 301 handle turn almost a full turn before the ball engages ?
There is only 1 trip point on that reel as on almost all spinning reels. You are likely opening the bail just after the trip point. Which is fine. Try opening it at different spots and you should notice that it trips sooner. Best wishes Bobby! .....and Brenda too!
